4) Describe how this activity benefits you and/or the college

This is a conference which offers many opportunities to advance my knowledge of the current practices in teaching and learning. I am a devoted teaching professor so I will naturally be interested in the sesssions that focus on teaching specific types of students, grading and feedback that promotes learning, and especially learner centered course design. Since I am involved in the district level E-learning management and since I also teach courses online, I would attend the teaching and learning with technology sessions. I am also involved in mentoring our new faculty, so I hope to get ideas regarding faculty development and mentoring faculty.

5) Did you submit a proposal and receive S&PD funding within the last 12 months? NOTE: Do not include funding for travel that was requested or offered by the administrator to whom this proposal is being submitted.

Yes

If yes, complete “Activity” below.

No

I have never received S&PD funding.

Activity: Attended the ASMCUE (American Society of Microbiology Conference on Undergraduate Education)

Dates or Term: July 27-30, 2017

Cost: $1927.16

6) How does your activity relate to the Strategic Plan and Mission of the College?

Palm Beach State's missions states that we are to maintain a dynamic teaching and learning environment and I am a full time faculty member here at the college.

7) If approved, what is your instructional plan while on leave: Note: Supervisors of faculty who teach must provide a detailed plan of instructional time while the professor/instructor is away from the classroom on SPD leave. An example of unacceptable coverage would be to send students to the library during class time.

This conference occurs while I am teaching only one online course during my summer A term as an adjunct. I will be able to communicate with students and grade assignments while I am at the conference.

4) Describe how this activity benefits you and/or the college

Because the conference brings together writers and editors of different institutions and burgeoning genres, I know that I would learn a great deal about today's popular forms of writing to teach my students. With stronger and more current, professional examples to draw on, I would be in a better place to guide the writing projects and encourage the work of students who have turned to these genres in increasing numbers because of our popular culture films and television shows, graphic novels, and comic books. I would also learn what is happening in the marketplace and become better informed, more confident, and helpful to students in placing their works. I also see more positive collaboration with others continuing long after the conference has ended. My participation in this conference will allow me to better equip my students to meet the learning outcomes of the courses I teach which speak to students being able to 1) demonstrate the ability to produce polished, professional-quality creative and critical writing; 2) understand how to submit their work for publication; 3) understand how their own influences and aesthetic values as writers fits into a larger literary tradition; 4) show mastery of the short story with well-defined characters, effective dialogue, sustainable plot, and well-designed settings.

5) Did you submit a proposal and receive S&PD funding within the last 12 months? NOTE: Do not include funding for travel that was requested or offered by the administrator to whom this proposal is being submitted.

6) How does your activity relate to the Strategic Plan and Mission of the College?

The PBSC mission statement reflects the goals of preparing our students to be ethical, responsible, and leader-oriented citizens in diverse, engaged, responsive and responsible global learning communities and to make significant contributions in the work world. The diversity of this international conference speaks to the mission by acknowledging the critical insight diverse views offer. Writing is not lecturing the reader why he or she is wrong, but engaging the reader in a rich dialogue that tolerates and anticipates differnces.
