Where Are They Now?the sign hanging Outside his Office simply states: “Chief Operating Officer Jerad Hanlon.” But the story behind those words and the part John Randolph Foundation’s scholarship program has played in the life of Jerad Hanlon says so much more.

Jerad’s relationship with JRF began nine years ago when he was a 22-year-old graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University studying in Health Administration. At the time, Jerad’s mother was working as a pediatric nurse at Chippenham Johnston-Willis Hospital and had received information about the scholarship opportunities available through the John Randolph Foundation.

She encouraged Jerad to apply and in 2003 he received the Franklin D. Boyce Scholarship. This scholarship had been established in 1996 to recognize Mr. Boyce’s long years of service as CEO of the John Randolph Medical Center and also as the first CEO of the John Randolph Foundation.

The purpose of the Boyce Scholarship is to promote a broad range of professional health occupations including nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, physicians, radiology/lab technicians, psychologists, and, in Jerad’s case, health administrators.

As a child, Jerad did not seem destined for a career in health, primarily because he readily admits he never liked science. But his mother was a nurse and his father was an accountant and the combination of the two influences compelled him to pursue health administration. Throughout his education Jerad rarely veered from his determination to complete his studies and since his scholarship was renewable for additional consecutive years as long as he maintained at least a 3.0 GPA, Jerad

received the Boyce Scholarship award again in 2004 and also in 2005.In Jerad’s words, “I received my Masters of Hospital Administration in 2006 in part due to the JRF scholarship that was awarded to me. After graduation I worked for Health Management Associates (HMA) in various locations and roles and last July I was fortunate enough to move back to the area to accept the position of Chief Operating Officer at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg.”

When Jerad isn’t at work, he enjoys being on the water and surrounded by nature. Boating is one of his passions and often includes scuba diving and water skiing. Beyond that Jerad has his pilot’s license and loves to fly as well as snow ski. Currently he lives in Chester with his beautiful wife, April who is the Wellness Coordinator for the City of Richmond.

Jerad is one of our scholarship winners who wrote to thank the John Randolph Foundation for helping him achieve his goals. In his letter he stated: “Being back in the community, I have already seen some of the work the JRF continues to do. It does not go unnoticed and I just want to thank you and the scholarship committee for giving me an opportunity to get my education so as to improve and affect the way healthcare is delivered in Central Virginia.”

Jerad was the featured speaker at the recent JRF scholarship awards reception. He again thanked the Foundation for the help he had received in achieving his career goals and encouraged all the scholarship winners to give back to their communities in their future careers.

Clearly, the investment made by the John Randolph Foundation in Jerad’s life is already yielding a very high rate of return. Yet it is also clear the dividends from this investment have only begun and will continue for his lifetime. And we will watch in anticipation to see how they impact the lives of many people in the years to come!

Through the generosity of individuals, local businesses and community groups in our area, the Foundation is honored to offer a growing number of scholarship opportunities for students like Jerad who reside in the communities we serve.

Since 1997 the Foundation has awarded $1,006,167 to 546 area students through its scholarship program. The Foundation, along with its many scholarship benefactors, is making a difference in the lives of these recipients and in the communities where they live and work. Like Jerad, these scholarship recipients touch thousands of lives when they graduate and are able to provide vital services to countless numbers of people.

The JRF Catalyst will continue to feature articles focusing on past scholarship recipients in our column entitled, “Where Are They Now?” If you are a past recipient, please call or email John Randolph Foundation

to share your story. We would love to hear from you!

The John Randolph Medical Center’s team of professionals provided screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and glucose so participants could find out if they were at risk for

specific health problems and learn what they needed to do to lower that risk.

Hopewell Recreation and Parks graciously donated free one-day passes so all participants could use the Community Center’s exercise equipment and participate in the water aerobics classes that were going on throughout the hours of the fair.

A Zumba demonstration preceded a Zumba class where people learned basic steps and danced away stress and pounds to a Latin beat. Cathy Marcum from the Hopewell-Prince George Community Health Center led a class in Tai Chi Chen

and Dr. Cliff Morris’ team demonstrated the non-stress, exercise art of Qi Gong. Everyone had the opportunity to try it themselves and even the children enjoyed learning these healthy exercise arts!

The Chick-fil-A cow roamed the fair giving out coupons for healthy snacks and a DJ from WHAP kept everything lively with music and announcements of raffle

winners. An exciting point in the schedule was the raffling off of bicycles. Eight lucky kids won shiny new bikes that included all the necessary safety equipment for them to take home.

The John Randolph Foundation believes the wellness fair is a great opportunity for the citizens of Hopewell to become healthier in mind, body and soul and encourages the entire community to personally adopt the JRF wellness theme, “Set Sail for a Healthier Hopewell!”

A very special “Thank You” to all the volunteers and vendors who shared their knowledge and wellness resources to make the fair beneficial and fun for everyone!

In January, the JOhn randOlph fOundatiOn held its Semi-Annual Grant Awards Ceremony at its office in Hopewell. A total of $366,335 was awarded to 14 non-profit organizations that share the Foundation’s mission to improve health and quality of life in Hopewell and the surrounding communities.

Gayle Hunter Haglund, Chief Philanthropy Officer of FeedMore, Inc., spoke to the grant recipients and other JRF guests about the state of food insecurity in the region. “Nationally and locally, too many children are food-insecure which means they don’t know when they’ll eat again,” said Ms. Haglund. “And every hungry child is one who cannot grow into their full potential.”

Mrs. Jeanne Flinn, outgoing Chairman of the JRF Grant Committee, shared statistics regarding the work of the grant program. “Since December of 1996, the Foundation has invested over $13 million back into the

community through responsive grants,” she said.

The following is a list of the grants the Foundation awarded in January:

2011 Operating expenses as a percent Of net assets

Since its inception, the Foundation has sought to earn a competitive rate of return on the portfolio, while minimizing risk. A diversified asset allocation model, along with a tested spending formula based on average net assets, is designed to assure that the investment return is sufficient to meet short-term needs while maintaining the endowment into perpetuity.

The cost of operations directly relates to the ability of an organization to fulfill its charitable purpose. The Foundation’s ratio of operating expenses to its net assets is 2.62 percent. According to the Council on Foundations, operating expenses range from under 5 percent for 45 percent of community foundations to over 30 percent for 9 percent of foundations. The average operating expense is 6 percent.

if yOu hit the greens in the next couple of months, you’ll probably need to wipe the sweat off the back of your neck. But if you play in John Randolph Foundation’s Annual Golf Tournament on October 8th, you won’t. We’re predicting blue skies and mild temperatures in the low to mid 70’s!

Monday, October 8, 2012 is the date for the foundation’s 13th annual golf tournament which will be held, once again, at the beautiful country club of petersburg. Nestled in the heart of the Southside, it is one of the South’s most historic and charming country clubs.

This fun-filled tournament raises money for John Randolph Foundation’s scholarship funds which have been established by individuals, civic organizations and area businesses. Over the past 12 years, these funds have assisted almost 550 area students with

the opportunity to fulfill their educational dreams by attending college and technical schools.

Hopewell native Lee Mahaney, Account Executive Sales Producer at the Ford Agency is serving as the chairman of this year’s exciting tournament. In addition to competing for first, second and third place, golfers will also vie for the longest drive, closest to the pin, a chance to ‘beat the pro’ and the opportunity to win a brand new car.

Let’s all “Hit the Greens for Scholarships” and take a ‘slice’ out of the escalating cost of higher education for our kids!

Departing Trustees and Welcomes New PresidentThanks

2012 John randolph foundation golf tournament: October 8th

at its January BOard Meeting, the John Randolph Foundation installed Mr. Kevin S. Foster as its president for 2012. In accepting the Board’s appointment, Mr. Foster thanked outgoing President, Ronald L. Caricofe, for his service during the previous year. “I look forward to benefiting from his leadership and guidance in the upcoming year,” he said. Mr. Caricofe will continue to remain active by serving on the Executive Committee as well as several other Foundation committees.

Mr. Caricofe recognized the contributions of three retiring trustees: Mrs. Jeanne M. Flinn, Mrs. Anne Page Henry, and Mr. Paul Karnes. Mrs. Flinn had been on the Board since 2008, Mrs. Henry since 2002 and Mr. Karnes since 2007. Mr. Caricofe thanked

them for their faithful service as members of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He applauded their tenure stating, “You will be missed very much and we thank you for your years of hard work on behalf of the John Randolph Foundation.”

President Foster also thanked the three retiring trustees. In recognizing the work of Mr. Karnes, Mr. Foster stated: “On any day, Paul’s 50 percent effort would be a normal man’s 100 percent. We sincerely hope you will continue to be involved in the Foundation in the days to come.”

President Foster has served on the JRF Board of Trustees since 2007. He is a Certified Public Accountant who earned his degree in accounting from Virginia

Polytechnic Institute. He is a former trustee of the Prince George Emergency Crew and, until last year, served as Vice Chairman of the Prince George County School Board. He is also a member of the Prince George Fire Department and the Prince George Ruritan Club. Mr. Foster lives in Prince George with his wife, Tara, and two children.

In addition, the following officers have been appointed for the upcoming year:President: Mr. Kevin S. Foster Vice President: Mr. James T. BurenSecretary: Ms. Linda E. HyslopTreasurer: Dr. Jerome D. SkaggsImmediate Past President: Mr. Ronald L. Caricofe
