Dear Members of the Loyola College Community,

This is the final newsletter for the school year and there are many interesting

events to share with the College community. This year has ended on a very

positive note for all the remaining year levels with Masses and celebratory

events. The final week for staff has been very busy with finalising Semester

Reports, planning meetings for 2021 and the induction of new staff.

Blessing and Opening ceremony of Two Wolves Hub This event took place on Tuesday 24 November in the presence of our Year 7 students, staff and special visitors. The ceremony was livestreamed to all classes in the College. VCE/VCAL Results of the Class of 2020

At the time of writing, this year’s Year 12 results had not yet been published. A full report will be given in the first newsletter of

2021. We wish all our students the best of luck when the results are announced on 30 December.

Staffing Matters At this time of the year we farewell staff who are leaving the College. We thank them for their contribution to the life of Loyola and wish them well for the future.

The following staff will complete contract positions: Anna Barnes, Stephen Berkley, Sarah Johnston, Maria Paoli, James Smith

The following staff will be resigning from the College: Emily Fitzgerald (L: 17), Francesca Lo Presti (L: 17), Caroline Need (L: 16), Jade Scibilia (L: 02) and Cameron Veal (L: 18).

I wish to acknowledge long serving staff member Mrs Sharon Stafford (L: 90-20) who is retiring from Loyola after 30 years of

service to our community. During her time at Loyola, Mrs Stafford taught mostly in the areas of Visual Art and Design and was a

Mentor teacher to many Loyola students in Mannix and McAuley House. We thank her for her service to Catholic Education and

to Loyola and wish her every blessing for the future.

I wish those staff leaving every blessing as they move to other schools or pursue other interests.

A full list of new staff will appear in the first Ignatian in 2021.

I take this opportunity of thanking all the College staff for their dedication and hard work in this most challenging year in supporting

our students and families. Meeting the educational needs of our students is an ongoing and ever-changing challenge for all of us

and for those who work in Catholic schools it is a vocation of service. I greatly appreciate and value the support that the whole

College Leadership team has given me in leading the Loyola Community and wish to acknowledge them particularly this year when

we have had to meet the many unforeseen challenges of COVID -19.

Condolences We express our deepest sympathy to: Ms Zaharias on the recent passing of her mother. Christian Milenkovski (11 KGCW) on the recent passing of his father. Please keep these members of our community and their families in your prayers at this time of loss.

Christmas Greetings As this year draws to a close, I wish to thank all who have contributed to its success despite the many challenges. The year has again passed quickly, and Christmas celebrations are beginning. This year we have reflected on the theme “Head, Heart and Hands”. We have seen many examples of the living out of this theme through the actions of support shown by staff, students, and our generous families at times of crisis and fear of what was to come. We have stood in solidarity with others in the way Jesus showed us.

As we move towards the feast of Christmas let us take the time in this Advent season to prepare ourselves for the celebration of

the Saviour’s birth making a place for Him in our lives and in our homes this Christmas season.

I wish all a happy, safe and blessed Christmas and look forward to having a wonderful new year with the Loyola community in

2021.

Annual Awards Ceremony

Last Friday we held our annual awards Ceremony. This was a wonderful occasion to celebrate the achievements of our students.

Thank you to all our students, families, and teachers who supported the event. We will list all our generous sponsors in the

Ignatian next year.

2021

There has been so much discussion about what this year turned out to be, so I thought it would be a great moment to talk about

2021. We have so many events to catch up on. Next year is going to be huge as we attempt to celebrate our 40th anniversary

(again) and roll out lots of new events that were planned for this year. Keep an eye out on social media as we advertise our

February events.

A huge thank you to all the people who have supported my team this year and I look forward to having our community back on

campus, together again.

Year 7-9 Final Masses

As COVID restrictions eased we were able to offer end-of-year masses to years 7-11. Certain restrictions and practices including the liberal use of hand sanitiser and no congregational singing had to be observed.

Naturally, the experience of living through the COVID-19 pandemic was a common theme of the homilies. Students also provided a reflection on the year. All reminded those present on the positive start to the year, recalling experiences including the term one camps, swimming sports, preparing for House Eisteddfod, the first couple of rounds of ACS sport – then lockdown! They spoke about adjusting to on-line learning, especially the initial challenges, the joy of returning to school mid-year and the disappointment of going back to on-line learning during the second wave. However, there were positives – more time with family, learning to be more independent and resourceful, and a new appreciation of the support of friends and the opportunity to attend school – something many felt they had taken for granted previously. Advent is a time of hope and looking forward to the birth of Jesus and what he means to the world. The students certainly expressed their desire to spend time with their families and hopefully return to a more ‘normal’ 2021. I wish all the College Community a holy Christmas and a safe and restful break.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING AND LEARNING

2020 certainly has been a very different year for all, and as we approach Christmas it is worth reflecting on our year. Parents and

guardians will receive their reports in the next few weeks, and it is important to celebrate the successes, the challenges and ways

to improve in 2021.

I would like to thank the teaching and support staff for all their work over the year. We have a great team at Loyola and continue

to work for the benefit of our students. I would also like to thank the parent community for their ongoing support of their child, and

support for the College.

I wish you all a very happy and safe Christmas and we look forward to working with you in 2021.

Unit 1 – 4 Orientation Preparation Work

Our students in Units 1 – 4 2021 have completed their Orientation program. In class, every subject teacher would have gone over

the expectations for learning and what is needed to have a successful 2021.

some of the work requirements are listed below.

This is only a snapshot of expected work to be completed.

Congratulations to: President: Michelle Morgan, nee Parker (L:89-94) Vice-President: Yolanda Cauchi, nee Gaspar (L:89-94)

Thank you to departing President and Vice-President Troy and Anthony who have been a constant support to the association over the last two years, contributing ideas, personal time, presence, and hard work at all events.
