FROM THE CEOYEAR IN REVIEW

A warm greeting to our friends and supporters:

Another year has fl own by and things never slow down at

Bridgehaven! Several signifi cant milestones were achieved this

year that keep us growing and providing leadership in

mental health recovery. Bridgehaven applied for licensure

as a Behavioral Health Services Organization (BHSO), a

licensure category newly created by the state during 2012-

13. We were surveyed and granted our BHSO license with no

defi ciencies. Subsequently we obtained a Medicaid number

for the agency that together with the licensure allows

Bridgehaven the option to operate independently

as a Medicaid provider. This has never before been

possible in the history of the agency. We exceeded our

fi nancial goals, earning more revenue than budgeted.

Expansion of our Peer Support Specialist Services was

a program priority this year. Peer Support Specialists are

individuals who live with mental illness and have successfully

completed an intensive training course approved by the state.

Once certifi ed, Peer Support Specialists provide individual

and group support to members, offering them a unique

perspective on hope and recovery. Because our Peer

Support Specialists have lived experience with mental

illness they understand both the sense of hopelessness

that can accompany mental illness and the hope and

empowerment associated with recovery. Peer Support

Specialists have brought a fresh perspective to Bridgehaven,

challenging all of us to think differently about

recovery from mental illness and they are working in all

aspects of the agency’s operations, including public relations

and referral development, outreach and the intake process for

new members, health advocacy and enhancing

Bridgehaven’s presence in social media.

Our Peer Support Specialist staff planned and

implemented the Peer Empowerment Path

(PEP) a consumer run program that opened in

January. The program offers a variety of peer

led support groups as well as special interest

groups that give members the opportunity to

develop new skills, talents and hobbies. Our

Peer Support Specialists are passionate about

wellness and they are helping members and

staff to make healthier food choices, incorporate

exercise into our lives and manage stress.

Through a capacity building grant from the

Louisville Community Foundation, we engaged

the Cubero Group to re-design our website

for greater interactivity and user friendliness.

The fresh, new look of the website has been

incorporated into an updated logo and

consistent branding for all of our printed and

electronic communications.

Once again recovery outcomes were outstanding.

Members achieved their recovery goals

at a rate of 93%. Psychiatric hospitalizations

were reduced by 82%, maintaining a fourteen

year average of 85%. No members who had

been incarcerated prior to entering Bridgehaven

services returned to the criminal justice system,

for a 100% reduction in incarcerations.

70% of members reported satisfaction with

their quality of life and satisfaction with

Bridgehaven’s programs and services

remained high at 92%.

In closing, our members, staff and Board thank

you, our loyal supporters and donors. Without

you we could not manage the rapid changes in

our environment and maintain the high quality

services for which we are known. You are our

cheerleaders, our advisers and our sustainers.

Thank you once again for a great year.

Several signifi cant milestones were achieved this year that keep us growing and providing leadership in mental health recovery.

MICHAELMy name is Michael Kapfhammer, and I have struggled with mental illness for nearly 20 years. I am a former member at Bridgehaven, but now I’m currently on staff as a Peer Support Specialist. In addition to struggling with my mental health issues, I’ve also been clean from drug abuse for nearly 12 years now. Having the chance to share my recovery story with you is the single most uniquely special, necessary, and scariest thing I have ever done in my life.

You see I wasn’t supposed to be here, it was not supposed to be like this. How can mental illness affect a person with a wonderful childhood, who

served as high school class president, was an athlete, and was voted most likely to succeed out of high school? Someone who scored in the 99th percentile on his GRE and was fortunate that I was good at nearly everything I ever tried (except golf, I’m really bad at golf). I eventually graduated from Bellarmine University with a degree in Communications and began to work and start my career path. Soon thereafter I began to feel lost and empty. I was constantly depressed. I seemed to sit around and obsess and wonder if this was all there was to life, for I found no meaning or purpose for myself in it. As far as I was concerned, life was a waste of time. I needed more meaning, I thought, but I was too depressed to put the effort into deep thoughts about what that ‘more meaning’ would look like. So the easy solution…. I did drugs. And I liked them, a lot. I was a superhero in my mind when I was high, and not the sad and mopey person I had turned into. All the bad thoughts went away.

For a while anyway. Then they started to creep back and overtake my life again, only this time

with an addiction added on top of it. Eventually I found rehab and got clean and sober. I stayed clean after I left rehab and was ready to go full steam at the world again. Except life got worse not better, because my mental illness was even more vivid because it wasn’t masked by my substance abuse, and the darkness in my mind was overtaking my life. It owned me. I wanted to never wake up again. The pain was unending, heavy, and killed all the hopes and dreams I had ever had.

As time went on I found good doctors and I managed to improve to the point where I could

at least function. I was not happy, or pleased with things, but I functioned well enough to go to work, gain promotions, make decent money, get married and have two beautiful children. All these good and wonderful things taking place in my life didn’t change my deep, deep sadness. The stalking loneliness was so severe at times that when I traveled for work and was away for a week at a time, I’d return home and wake my youngest daughter, who was 1 at the time, just so I could talk to someone. That was the apex of my connectivity.

Things worsened and my wife couldn’t handle me anymore. I totally understood where she was coming from. I understood when she left and took my family. I went on to get fi red, lose my home, and to fi le for bankruptcy. All I could seem to do was sleep 16-18 hours a day. I didn’t even have enough energy to change the channel on the TV. I was too disgusted to shave because I hated looking at myself in the mirror. It’s a place I hope none of you can relate to, for it is horrible, unrelenting, unyielding and merciless. I survived only by the thought that my daughters

I just needed to learn how to cope with my illness, so I could recover and consequently, thrive.

may one day have to face these types of issues, and I believed I may be the only one able to help them if they do. It was the one thing that kept me alive and it seemed to make perfect sense in my mind since I had never seemed to fi nd some-one that could help and understand what I was going through.

My friends fi nally intervened and came and got me. They wouldn’t allow me to live this way any longer. I knew enough to know they were right, and through a chain of events I landed at Bridgehaven’s door. After about 10 seconds at Bridgehaven my perception changed….. my reality changed. I saw so many others dealing with issues that I couldn’t even fathom, much less make it through. I never understood how lucky I really was. I saw them coping and taking action, recovering from horrors that I never even knew existed. I knew then it was time for me to go to work on myself. I dedicated the next year and a half to me, to getting better with Bridgehaven as my main support system. I had a therapist there who was a genius; in fact, she treated me with an open heart, like a person, a human being, not a patient, which I needed desperately. So when she asked me why I was putting a ceiling on my possibilities, I had no real an-swer. Because that’s what stigma does. It limits your life. It lies, and you believe it. She and Bridgehaven made me realize I am not dumber, less-talented, or less capable than I had been in the past. I just needed to learn how to cope with my illness, so I could recover and consequently, thrive. Now I see, and believe, my role as Peer Support Specialist is an exciting fi rst step to goals in my life and career I never even imagined before.

Today things are so much better. I have bad days, but not any more than anyone else. And now I am equipped with a large tool-kit of skills to make sure I never get back into the darkness

ever again. I am a part of great things going on at Bridgehaven. I get the chance to do great things every day. Things that are meaningful. Things that are purposeful. It is that meaning and purpose that I wanted so badly when this whole journey began and I was questioning my life. Bridgehaven helped me fi nd those answers in my heart and now I’m able to pass that knowledge on to others so they can hold it in theirs.

There is a big fi ght on our hands; the world, through no fault of its own, is vastly ignorant of this disease, and the harm that stigma does to those affected by it. I plead to you to help us, lead with your hearts. Educate people. Start with

your children, your co-workers, your neighbors, your fam-

ily and friends. Teach them now, and our

future gets better for everyone. We need your help, we must get out the word that recovery is expected, and that stigmas are

lies. This issue is in our face every

day. It is in the news frequently, with prom-

inent people revealing their own illness along with

the tragic incidents that can occur when mental illness is not treated.

We can’t be scared to talk about something that affects so many in our own personal lives and in our community. Help us take the love from our heart into yours, and get out our message, then watch individuals heal, and watch the world heal.

Thank you.
