Words from the Pastors
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The
Lord in near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
THANKSGIVING let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. “ Philippians 4: 4-7
November is a month that we all know and love because of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a
time in which one day out of the year we remember to come together and give thanks. It is a
time for immediate and extended family to gather together around a meal and share in mem-
ories and then partake in a feast.
This year at Advent we will do the same as we gather for Advent’s Thanksgiving Worship Meal.
During this time together we will eat, fellowship, and worship together. There will be a time
in the worship service for us all to share in our thanksgivings in prayer and supplication. We
encourage everyone to start thinking about what you are thankful for this past year remem-
bering those words from Paul in the letter to the Philippians. In everything, by prayer and sup-
plication with THANKSGIVING let your requests be made known to God. During the wor-
ship service we will let our requests be made known to God as we worship our Lord to the
fullest. We have a lot to be thankful for this year and there is much we can lift up to God.
Come and let us rejoice together. November is filled with many wonderful worship opportu-
nities in addition to the Thanksgiving worship service. The fist Sunday in November begins is
All Saints Sunday, a day we remember all saints, present and those who have passed before us.
The third Sunday in November we will have Consecration Sunday and our Congregational
Meeting. We will close out November celebrating Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of
the Christian calendar remembering Christ who is our King now and forever. Later that even-
ing we will gather for our Advent Thanksgiving Worship Meal.
Truly the Lord is near. Come and see the goodness of God at Advent Lutheran Church. May
the peace of God which surpasses all understanding guard your hearts and minds in Christ
Jesus. And may we in all things, give thanks! Amen!
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Jason and Pastor Andrea

MISSONARY NEWS
Dear Advent family,
By the time the newsletter is sent out, I will be back in Uganda. Please pray for RUHU, the
children, and the people of Uganda as we spread Christ’s light and love to them.
Recently, my friend Jordyn was there for 2 weeks. She was able to help with the new women’s
empowerment program. The team has been doing an amazing job at lifting up these young
women and giving them a foundation for a future!! Last week was international day for girls.
Sadly, RUHU was contacted about a 7 year old girl that was raped by a drunk man. She was
taken in by RUHU and will be cared for by the team. Please pray for her and to keep all these
young women safe. Also keep everyone in your prayers as it’s rainy season and the flooding
can be devastating.
God is in the slums, in the cardboard boxes where the poor play house. God is in the silence
of a mother who has infected her child with HIV. God is in the cries heard under the rubble
of war. God is in the debris of wasted opportunity and lives, and God is with us wherever we
go. Sometimes life is hard. We experience many emotions. But remember that God sent His
Son to experience those same emotions. Always remain appreciative of the gifts we have been
given, gifts we may take for granted. Look at these children. Their hearts are so full. They thank
God every day, all day. They truly survive on “daily bread” and are so thankful for what they
get that one day.
Love you all and look forward to seeing you when I return!!
Pam
November 17 is Consecration Sunday. Consecration Sunday is a day when collectively as a church we come together to turn in our pledge, time and talent cards which represent the giving of ourselves, our time, and our possessions to God. These cards will be
distributed in worship on November 3rd and we will hear about this year’s stewardship theme.
Our Stewardship Theme for this year is “Generosity” based on 2 Corinthians 8:3:
“they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means…”
We thought we would share this stewardship letter from the ELCA. There are some great questions to consid-er as we talk about the ways we live out our own stewardship generously at Advent, in our communities, and
in the world.
Stewardship Program Coordinator for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America writes: Dear friends in Christ,
If one of our highest aspirations for people is that they might live into a life of generosity and service, blessing both their lives and the world, how do we, as congregations and the church, model that kind of generosity? How might our life together regularly teach and encourage people to want to be part of something bigger than themselves, sacrificing self for the benefit of others?
I think the answer has everything to do with creating remarkable cultures in which hospitality is revered, emphasized and practiced. At the center of this culture is an awareness of what we want for people, not just what we want from them. Hospitality involves food, love, empathy, warmth and caring. It means helping people to feel that they belong, they matter, they are noticed and heard. It is the most reliable source of social capital within congregations and beyond for better lives and a better world. It also hap-pens to be the way of Jesus.
Here are a few questions to consider. What are we giving to those who participate in our congregations that might help inspire them, in turn, to be generous? How are we practicing generosity beyond our con-gregations, as another kind of example to emulate? If our congregations can’t do these things in obvi-ous, authentic ways, how can we expect our people to do something different in their own lives?
We are a church that is energized by lively engagement in our faith and life. Thank you for doing God’s work with a faithful, generous heart! Faithfully, Steve Oelschlager
We hope that you will join us on for worship on November 17th for Consecration Sunday. The congregational meeting will follow worship.
New Adult Sunday School Class The Adult Sunday School on November 24th will begin a new study
from Adam Hamilton called “The Journey: Walking the Road to
Bethlehem”. It will be a five week class leading us to Christmas.
We invite you to journey with Adam Hamilton as he travels from
Nazareth to Bethlehem in this fascinating look at the birth of Jesus
Christ. As he did with Jesus' crucifixion in 24 Hours That Changed
the World, Hamilton once again approaches a world-changing event
with thoughtfulness. Using historical information, archaeological data,
and a personal look at some of the stories surrounding the birth, the
most amazing moment in history will become more real and heart-
felt as you walk along this road.
Review: “This book may be the greatest Christmas present of the year. Adam thoughtfully,
movingly walks us through what really happened when God touched this planet. The richness
of the full story will touch your life as well.” —John Ortberg, author of The Me I Want to Be:
Becoming God’s Best Version of You
We have copies of the book in the office if you would like a copy. We ask that you read the
Introduction and 1st chapter prior to the first class on the 24th. You do not have to read
ahead, but it does help with the class discussions. We are looking forward to this class and
hope you can join us.
Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Jason
