Our Achievements• Hosted more than 4.4 million patrons throughout
the year, bringing the total patronage across all venues to more than 35 million since the formation of the organisation in 2001.
• Completed construction on the second Olympic sized pool at the Sleeman Sports Complex in March 2012. The fi rst event held in the newly constructed facility was the Swimming Australia National Age Championships in April 2012. The improved aquatic facilities allows the venue to bid for National and International swim meets.

• Launched the iPhone “Megafan” application www.qldmegafan.com.au. This free app gives patrons useful information about all Stadiums Queensland venues, and features upcoming matches and events, stadium maps and seating plans, venue transport options, live scores, memorable sporting moments and stadium food and drink menus.
• Launched www.stadiumfunctions.com.au to promote the non-event day functions business across the nine venues. The website presents prospective hirers with video tours, images and details of the function spaces available.
• Completed upgrades to the Bundy Bar at Dairy Farmers Stadium. This previously underutilised space is now a popular pre and post-match destination for North Queensland Cowboys fans.
• Secured the BMX National Championships to be held at Sleeman Sports Complex in 2013, 2015 and 2017.

The 2011/12 fi nancial year, Stadiums Queensland’s tenth year of operations, has been one of consolidation for Stadiums Queensland. Since the establishment of the Major Sports Facilities Act (2001) the organisation has grown from managing one venue to nine representing a combined asset value of $1.2 billion.
This is my third Annual Report since becoming Chairman in December 2009 and I have great respect for how this organisation operates and the passion of our staff and the industry in general.
Stadiums Queensland is a small organisation operating in a complex environment but employees never lose sight of the task of delivery for both patrons and hirers. There is very much a culture of ‘let’s do this’ regardless of the task at hand whether that be the delivery of new infrastructure or events. Time and time again Stadiums Queensland has been asked to deliver and our people just get on and do the job.
At the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) and the Sleeman Sports Complex, those who wish to run or swim laps as part of personal fi tness programs or leisure activities can do so right next to Olympic champions, which illustrates the mixed use nature of these venues. At the football venues, the great work of our hirers and their grassroots programs allows youngsters the opportunity to play in front of large crowds during halft ime intervals. QSAC and the Sleeman Sports Complex host school carnivals on a regular basis. Carnivals are held at The Gabba for junior AFL competitions and Suncorp Stadium continues to host the Brisbane Primary Schools’ Rugby League Grand Final. These experiences cannot be underestimated in terms of encouraging participation and a lifelong support of the codes and attendance at the venues.
While the marketing of events is largely the domain of the hirers, Stadiums Queensland works to deliver venues which meet the ever changing requirements of fans and hirers.
High standards of customer satisfaction have been set at Stadiums Queensland venues. In recent customer satisfaction research, 94% of patrons surveyed at events held at all Stadiums Queensland venues during 2012 stated their overall experience was either good or very good. While this is a very pleasing result, Stadiums Queensland, and its partners, aspire to improve these satisfaction ratings by continuing to invest in infrastructure and facilities to further enhance the venue experience.
One key element to improve the venue experience is to meet the ongoing thirst for technology upgrades across the venues. Patrons, hirers and stadium managers all expect seamless and uninterrupted communications, however, the constantly changing technology environment, coupled with the high cost of venue upgrades, requires careful consideration when investing in this infrastructure.
Over the next 12 months, Stadiums Queensland will commence the rollout of a series of upgrades and enhancements to data networks which will provide a sound backbone to support current and future technology infrastructure needed for venue access control, wi-fi for hirers, and high defi nition video for scoreboards and digital signage. This will be complemented with new point of sale infrastructure (currently being trialled in some venues) to allow for the use of loaded cards, tickets and Eft pos facilities which will improve patron experiences by increasing transaction speed through concessions and reducing congestion in the concourses.
Recent data from customer research at venues illustrates the continuing demand for high quality technology solutions at venues. For example, in surveys conducted across all Stadiums Queensland venues during 2012, one third of patrons accessed the internet from their smart phone during events, 44% of patrons posted material to social media at the event and over 60% of patrons sent a text message to someone outside of the event.

6Annual Report 2011–12Stadiums Queensland
Queensland continues to face tough competition for major events from interstate and overseas venues. Events promote the destination to a mass market and attract patrons from both near and far who contribute a vibrancy to the locality as well as providing local businesses, including hospitality, transport providers and retailers, with an economic boost.
Stadiums Queensland venues use local labour for a range of services including ushers, bar staff , security, catering and other event services, all of which are necessary for a safe and secure environment for thousands of patrons attending events at any one time. Conservative estimates put the economic impact of Stadiums Queensland venues at over $300 million per annum which supports the State’s investment in major sports infrastructure.
In the past 12 months, Stadiums Queensland and its partners have developed a forward events program which includes Rugby Union, Rugby League, BMX, Cricket, concert and special events to provide content for the venues and entertainment for Queenslanders into the future.
The flexibility of the Stadiums Queensland suite of venues has meant some events such as the NRL All Stars, which has been nurtured and grown at Skilled Park, now needs the bigger expanse of Suncorp Stadium to meet demand.
Similarly in the entertainment sector, those performing acts of a scale that cannot fi t into the Brisbane Entertainment Centre have the option of Suncorp Stadium, QSAC, Skilled Park or Metricon Stadium, where scheduling allows. All of this is a win for the patron as it means Queensland always has the right venue to accommodate the show.
The 2011/12 fi nancial year has seen completion of restoration work at venues aff ected by the Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi, with the
two venues that bore the brunt of mother nature during the Brisbane floods (Suncorp Stadium and the Queensland Tennis Centre) bouncing back to achieve record attendances.
I congratulate the new Queensland Government on its election success and the new Sports Minister, Hon Steve Dickson MP, on his appointment. My sincere thanks goes to my fellow Directors, the staff of Stadiums Queensland and the wide network of service providers required to deliver events at Stadium Queensland venues.

Just days aft er the 2011 Brisbane International Finals, flood waters inundated the QTC. The centre was re-opened in February as soon as the outdoor courts were restored. By October, the grass and clay courts were back in action, but it wasn’t until December that work was fi nished on Pat Raft er Arena. Between 50 and 75 construction workers were onsite daily to restore this facility in time for the 2012 Brisbane International.
Spanning some eleven months, flood recovery works at Suncorp Stadium and the QTC fi nally reached completion in December 2011. While both of these venues were operational within one month of floodwaters subsiding, there was still much to be done to rectify the back of house damage caused by the floods.
In light of the experience gained from hosting previous Brisbane International Tournaments, the opportunity was taken to revise the layout of the Pat Raft er Arena as part of the post flood restoration work. The Arena now provides larger player change rooms with better amenities, larger gym facilities, a dedicated media area, refurbished corporate dining facilities and a dedicated player entrance with direct access to the change rooms and Centre Court. Where possible, flood tolerant materials have been used. All hydraulic fi ttings are commercial grade quality and can be washed down in the event of a flood, and the air conditioning system has been redesigned to improve its resilience to floods.
The Brisbane International attracted a wealth of on-court talent and the public responded with some 92,800 attending the event in 2012. The 2012 Men’s Champion, Andy Murray, complimented the QTC saying “For an ATP 250 event, this venue and the facilities is equal of anywhere in the world” which is a credit to the tournament organisers and everyone involved in the venue’s recovery.
More than 35 million patrons have visited one of Stadiums Queensland’s nine venues to watch an event or use the wide range of community facilities available to the public since the formation of the organisation in late 2001.
During this time, Stadiums Queensland, working in conjunction with its many partners, has delivered new world class sports venues such as Skilled Park, Metricon Stadium and the Queensland Tennis Centre (QTC).
At the same time, a number of existing facilities have been upgraded to provide infrastructure for newly emerging competition sports (such as the Olympic standard BMX Supercross track at the Sleeman Sports Complex).
It is important all our venues continue to meet the standards set by governing bodies for elite competition. For example, it is now a requirement that venues hosting major swim meets have two full sized pools – one for swimmers to warm up and the other for competition.
The completion of a second Olympic size pool at the Sleeman Sports Complex during the last fi nancial year means Brisbane continues to be well positioned to attract major national and international swim meets. The addition of this second pool will also ensure access for the community and recreational swimmers, while allowing the elite swimming and diving training programs to grow.
Metricon Stadium crowned its fi rst year of operation with fans voting the venue as providing the best AFL match day experience for 2011. The stadium also won several design and construction awards including the ‘Best use of Sustainability’ and ‘Best Sporting and Community Facility over $20 million’ at the Gold Coast Queensland Master Builders Association Awards and was a fi nalist in the Stadium Business Awards, ‘Project of the Year’ category.

website has provided a platform to showcase the various function spaces available for hire across the nine venues.
I would like to express my thanks to the Chairman and Directors for their ongoing advice and valuable contribution to the governance of this growing and dynamic business.
I also acknowledge the support Stadiums Queensland receives from the Queensland Government, and that of the Minister for Sport, Hon Steve Dickson MP. Much of the work Stadiums Queensland undertakes to ensure venues remain compliant with the requirements of modern day elite sport, and that these high quality facilities remain accessible to schools, sports clubs and community groups (including for individual leisure and personal fi tness activities) is largely due to the support of the Queensland Government.
Finally, I want to compliment all the staff of Stadiums Queensland and those with whom we partner who, through their commitment and diligence, ensure each day our venues are presented for the conduct of events, functions, elite athlete training and community activities and which, over the course of last year, were attended by some 4.4 million people.
Kevin YearburyChief Executive
At Suncorp Stadium, flood restoration work was ongoing until December 2011, with the regular hirers, Roar, Reds and Broncos, utilising temporary facilities for much of the season. A number of enhancements have been undertaken to ensure that the stadium is as resilient as possible to any future flood inundation. Electrical switchboards and building operating systems have been elevated above the flood level and flood resistant materials have been used wherever practical, including block walls and relocatable fi xtures and fi ttings.
As with the QTC, the opportunity has been taken to upgrade a number of key facilities at Suncorp Stadium as part of the flood restoration work. Player change rooms were enlarged and modernised, warm-up rooms were expanded, and improved security systems installed. Amenity areas for teams playing in the curtain-raiser games have also been provided.
In addition, a viewing room has been created in the home team warm-up area. Known as the Diamond Lounge, this provides venue hirers with a new commercial opportunity to develop hospitality packages and allows fans the opportunity to see the home team go through its warm-up routine prior to entering the fi eld of play.
Suncorp Stadium had another great year, with more than 1.3 million patrons visiting the venue to witness the Brisbane Roar claiming back-to-back Championships, the Reds winning the Super XV crown and the Broncos bidding farewell to a legend of Rugby League, Darren Lockyer.
The 2011–12 year has seen Stadiums Queensland’s digital footprint expand. The majority of venues now have a social media presence catering to some 45,000 followers. The ‘Megafan’ iPhone app has proven popular and a new stadium functions
