Fine Art fed and Designer ledStaithes Studios Gallery is curated by artists Stef and Ian Mitchell
to reflect a passion for the natural, organic and abstract, offering
three floors of hand picked contemporary fine art, applied and
decorative craft. Alongside regular artists we have a rolling
programme of exhibitions on our top floor space.
Ian Mitchell Resident artist
Ian's approach to printmaking combines an interest in landscape,
design, logo and symbols. He uses a mixture of digital, litho, collage and
commercial materials. He has been awarded ACE funding to develop
work exploring motorway architecture and modernity and recently has
completed commissions for Arup and the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
His work is routed in the ‘picturesque’ and have a strong design
aesthetic.
Stef MitchellResident artist
Mono printing from
nature, Stef makes prints
which create an edge
from which the organic
accident and intentional
mark can be read.
Recent work combinines
the external language of
nature with the internal
language of textile
designs. Her folded prints
have developed from
book making and explore
the book as object
creating tension between
the read and unread.
After a degree in film,
photography and sound
Stef completed post
graduate studies at
Goldsmiths followed by
a second degree in
Fine Art. She exhibits
nationally and
internationally.

An exhibition of work made during a
week-long residency at Staithes
Studios in December 2016. Seeking
a sense of moving through and around
Staithes, the artists established a daily
routine: walk / take note / print.
Keeping to the working rhythm, plates
and formes were set up quickly and
editions printed each day.

Andrew Farmer
An exhibition of recent works painted en plein
air in oils in response to some of Andrews
favourite locations in Yorkshire from his local
woodland to the cliff tops of Flamborough
Head and Staithes. Andrew works exclusively
from life in oils working on a range of sizes and
formats.
Place Myths3rd May - 31st May
Weds - Sun 11am - 5pm
Louise Atkinson
The term “place myths” was coined by Nina Lubbren and David Crouch
as a way of describing how the sights associated with a location gain
traction in the public consciousness. Using collage Louise expands her
interest in the material culture of tourism.
Although the images are not based on real places, the use of colour and
image is intended to conjure up feelings and memories of past tourist
experiences. The imaginary quality of the work also aims to critique the
use of visual images in tourist literature as a way of generating desire in
the traveller.
Figure through the landscapeJune 1st - 30th
Weds - Sun 11am - 5pm
Stef Mitchell
Using photography and the medium of artists books this collection of
long durational projects explores time, lift and the effects on the body
whilst travelling through the landscape.
I like to think of them as “visual
poems”. This sensual world is one
to be absorbed, felt, and enjoyed.
Ele’s recent work has taken
inspiration from the ocean,
nature and the natural world. I
seek to make images that
have a feeling of light and
space, the landscape and the
sea, without being a literal
representation

Lesley Seeger
Exploring the arbitrary chemistry between objects and elements, Lesley’s
many layered paintings explore landscapes both observed and imagined,
interior and exterior, inviting us to recognise a poignant sense of place.

Ian Mitchell
Working with digital print, collage and
drawings, Ian explores his growing
interest in the built environment, and
mans structural interventions.
Working at different ends of the
country Lauri and Sally use
collage and found surfaces to
make sense of the world
around them.
Sally has been selected for
the Jerwood Drawing Prize
on four occasions and was
a prize winner in 2014. Her
work has been exhibited at
MIMA, in the Liverpool Biennal in ‘Drawing Paper’ co-curated with Tate
Liverpool and in 2016 a solo show at Rabley Drawing Centre.
Lauri’s work has been selected for numerous National Art Competitions
and she exhibits regularly across the UK, Europe and America.
