Academic Year 2016-17

INAUGURATION OF PHYSICS ASSOCIATION 2016-17

Department of Physics at St. Xavier’s College commenced the activities of the ‘Physics Association’ for the academic year 2016-17 on 27th September 2016, which was inaugurated by Dr. Sumod S. G., Department of Physics, SH College, Thevara. The major achievers of the department in various activities for the previous academic year were felicitated. Dr. Sumod also delivered a talk on ‘A Voyage to Space Research’.

INAUGURATION OF DST-FIST SUPPORTED NEW FACILITIES

· Inauguration of the newly constructed Research Lab by Principal Rev. Sr. Reethamma in June 2016.

· Inauguration of the new e-Library by Manager Rev Sr Angelica in June 2016.

· Inauguration of the new Video Library by Vice-Principal Rev. Sr. Shalini in June 2016.

APT WORKSHOP

Department of Physics organized two day workshop on “Radiations” on 11th and 12th February 2017.Around 30 teachers participated in this workshop from different states.

· Online model JAM test was conducted for the final year B.Sc. students.

INVITED TALKS

· Dr. Rajashri K Menon, General Surgeon and Physician’s Life Coach, Cornwall Community Hospital, Canada delivered a talk on the topic ‘A GPS for your life!’ and held an interactive session for the PG students of the department on 30th September 2016.

· A talk on carrier through energy conservation was given by Dr. Nissam on 8-11-16.

· Dr. Sreelatha. K., our alumna delivered a talk on”Mathematics for Physics” on 7-11-16.

· Rev Sr. Daisy, our alumna delivered a talk on “Tips for leading a successful life”.

· Dr. Maria.B.Parappilly from Flinders University delivered a talk on “The opportunities in Chemical and Physical Sciences at Flinders University, Australia” on 25-1-2017.

INSTITUTIONAL VISITS:

· UG & PG students were taken to “Space Expo” an exhibition conducted by ISRO at Ernakulathappan Ground on 7th October 2016.

· A visit to ‘Mithradham’ as a part of energy conservation awareness programme was arranged for UG students on 7th July 2016.

· Third year and Second year B.Sc. students visited naval ship ‘SUTLEJ’ on World Hydrography Day, 21st June 2016.

· Second year students visited the “Open House” programme conducted by the Department of Photonics, CUSAT on 17-1-2016.

· Second year B.Sc.students visited the “Open House” programme conducted by the Department of Applied Chemistry, CUSAT on 20-1-2017.

· Second M.Sc. students visited “Alberterian International Expo” on 25-1-2017.

· Second M.Sc. students visited Department of Photonics, CUSAT in August 2017

OUTREACH PROGRAM OF PHYSICS ASSOCIATION

As a part of annual Outreach Program (since 2012), theory and practical classes on various topics relevant to them were conducted for the students of SNDP School, Aluva to awaken their scientific curiosity & instill a scientific temperament in them. This year the programme comprises of Theory Classes and experimental demonstrations on the topic “Different Types of Forces & Motion” was conducted for the 6th standard students of SNDP School, Aluva by our PG students on 22nd September 2016.

ALUMNAE MEET & ACTIVITIES

Every year the College Alumnae meet is held on the 2nd Saturday of February and the department alumnae meet is held in November. Many entertainment programmes and games are arranged on the occasion and one or two lectures are also arranged for students by the alumnae.

Aluminae meeting was conducted on 3-11-16 in the Physics Seminar Hall. Alumnae’s meeting of the Department of Physics was conducted on 3rd November 2016 in the Seminar hall of the Department. Nearly thirty alumnae, retired teachers and present teachers attended the function. It was an occasion for the former students and teachers to cherish their memories and some of them shared their experiences and sweet memories of their campus life.

ACHIEVEMENTS

· Ms. Roshni Nair of Second B.Sc. Physics selected for INSPIRE Scholarship.

· Biniyamol, Anjana.M.S. and selected for Mahindra Scholarship.

· Ms. Anusree. M.A. of Ist M.Sc. Physics and team secured first prize for “Margamkali” in the MG University youthfestival.

· Ms. Mary Nishidha Boncy of II M.Sc. Physics secured third prize in Kathaprasamgam in the M.G. University youthfestival. Her team also won second prize in Drama.

· Sreelakshmi of IIIrd B.Sc. secure A Grade in Light music in the M.G.University.

· Ms. Roshni Nair of Second B.Sc. Physics secured third prize in power point competition in state level conducted by AICUF.

· Ms. Ashmi.P.P. and Athira C.S. won first prize in intercollegiate dance competition held at De Paul Institute, Angamali.

· Ms. Roshni Nair, Ms.Merin. K. Babu, Ms.Pooja P Bhat and Amin Nourin of II B.Sc. Physics won first prize in power point presentation competition held at Maharajas college, Ernakulam in connection with “National Science Day.”

Student Projects

· Ms. Anjala Jayaraj of third B.Sc. Physics selected for KSCSTE student project under the guidance of Prof.Lathadevi.PK.

· Three students of M.Sc. Physics selected for KSCSTE student project under the guidance of Dr. Sheena Xavier.

Achievements in Youth Festival

1. Ms. Merin K. Babu, Pooja S. Bhat, and Ann Maria Varghese, II DC physics won 1st prize in the group dance competition in college youth festival.

2. Ms. Gopika Mohan of IDC won IInd prize in Bharathanatyam competition in college youth festival

3. Ms. Ashmy P P, Athira C S, Devadatha Sheril M S, III DC physics won 1st prize in the group dance competition in college youth festival.

4. Ms. Sreelakshmi K won 1st prize in light Music competition, 3rd prize in Western Music and 3rd prize in Classical Music in college youth festival

5. Ms. Kavya S won 1st prize and Ms. Amriya Abdul Rahman won 2nd prize in Clay Modelling competition in college youth festival

6. 1st prize in Hindi Recitation and 2nd prize in the Hindi elocution competition during the college Youth Festival.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

· II M.Sc. students Ms. Mary Reshma Xavier, Ms. Anjaly & Ms. Karthi Krishna presented their project papers in connection with the activities of the Research Promotion Council of the College on 23rd September 2016.

· 13 Under Graduate students participated in the competitive Examination conducted by the ‘Association of Physics Teachers’ on 1st October 2016.

· Face to face interaction with the parents arranged in the Department in September.

· Physics Students won 3rd prize for Onapookkalam competitions during Onam celebrations.

· Physics students won third prize in wall painting competition conducted by women cell of the college.

· A departmental presentation was done for the students in January.

· Two of our faculty visited the NSS Camp held at Ashokapuram.

FRESHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS OF B. Sc. STUDENTS

Physics association officially welcomed the first semester students of B. Sc. Physics into the Physics family. The programme was organized by the 2nd & 3rd year UG students. The 1st year students were given chance to express their talents in front of the Physics family. Variety of entertainment programs were also arranged during the occasion by senior students.

NET COACHING

The Department is conducting NET Coaching classes regularly for our students.

Academic week Celebration

In connection with academic week celebrations a talk on “How to reduce electricity bill?” by Sri. Rajagopala Achari, Consultant, Energy Management Centre was conducted on 15-12-16. A workshop was conducted on LED Bulb Making for the students on 16-12-16.

Study tours

Thirty of our final year B.Sc. students along with two teachers visited Wayanad and Ootty as a part of study tour. They also visited tea and chocolate making factories.

Second M.Sc. students along with two teachers went Athirappilly, Vazhachal and Ezhattumugham.

Observation of Energy conservation Day

On the energy conservation day a rally was conducted on 14-12-16 which revealed the importance of energy conservation.

A street play was also played on the same day by the students.
