WelcomeWelcome to this service of Christian hospitality, especially if you are new to St Mark’s. Please stay for refreshments afterwards and say hello to a member of the welcome team or clergy before you go.As we gather, we celebrate the diversity of our human experience. We are not all the same, but together as one body we can discover deeper truths than are possible when we remain apart.Thank you for being here today.Activities for children and young people during the service will take place either in the lounge or outdoors. Please gather in the lounge after the prayer, “Journeying together in faith”.

About this serviceRemembrance Sunday gives us the opportunity to remember all who have lost their lives through armed conflict, as well as all those who are suffering as a consequence of war. It is a time to pray for peace and reconciliation. At the end of the Service you are invited to make your own act of remembrance using the small wooden crosses at the back of church. An occasion such as this can generate strong and opposing views and emotions which are sometimes difficult to interpret. Let us embody the change we wish to see in the world.

To use the Induction Loop, please select the T Setting on your hearing aid.

YELLOW LARGE PRINT versions of the Service are available at the back of church. We ask that mobile phones and pagers be switched off or set to silent mode. ALLERGENS - We use gluten and dairy-free bread and alcoholic wine, with a non-alcoholic option.

Opening Hymn

O GOD, OUR HELP in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home;Under the shadow of thy thronethy saints have dwelt secure;sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood,or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God,to endless years the same.A thousand ages in thy sightare like an evening gone, short as the watch that ends the nightbefore the rising sun.Time, like an ever-rolling stream, will bear us all away;they fly forgotten, as a dreamdies at the op’ning day.O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, A setting of Psalm 90 bybe thou our guard while troubles last,Isaac Watts (1674-1748).and our eternal home. Tune: St Anne.

Lamentations 1: 1-6 read by Roy Godden

1How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks;among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her;all her friends have dealt treacherously with her,   they have become her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude;she lives now among the nations,    and finds no resting-place;her pursuers have all overtaken her   in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals;all her gates are desolate, her priests groan;her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5 Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer   for the multitude of her transgressions;her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture;they fled without strength before the pursuer.

At the end the reader says:

How is this God’s word of life for us today?

Gradual HymnNew ev'ry morning is the love our wak'ning and uprising prove; through sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life and pow'r and thought.New mercies, each returning day, hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiv'n, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heav'n.If on our daily course our mind be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice.Old friends, old scenes, will lovelier be, as more of heav'n in each we see; some soft'ning gleam of love and prayer shall dawn on ev'ry cross and care. The trivial round, the common task, will furnish all we need to ask, room to deny ourselves, a road to bring us daily nearer God.Only, O Lord, in thy dear love fit us for perfect rest above;and help us, this and ev'ry day, to live more nearly as we pray.

Gospel – Luke 17: 5-10

The good news is proclaimed from the heart of the worshipping community.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.Glory to you, O Lord.

5 The apostles said to the Lord, ‘Increase our faith!’ 6The Lord replied, ‘If you had faith the size of a mustard seed,

9

Page 11: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

you could say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea”, and it would obey you.

10

7 ‘Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, “Come here at once and take your place at the table”? 8Would you not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink”? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded?10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, “We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!” ’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon – Ann LewinIt is a delight to welcome Ann back to St Mark’s. Her connections with this church go back many years and she has many friends here. Ann is a writer who has contributed to our liturgies here for many years.

The sermon is followed by a time of quiet for reflection

Your kingdom come. God of justice, truth and love.Your will be done. Inspire us with your Spirit

to let your Kingdom come. Amen.

11

Page 13: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peacewhich God wills for all people.Silence for reflection.

12

Page 14: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

MERCIFUL GOD,we confess that we have sinnedin thought, word and deed.We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are,and direct what we shall be;that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.

God who is both power and love, forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ. Amen.

Greeting of PeaceBlessed are the peacemakers, for they are God’s own.We meet in Christ’s name and share in his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you.And also with you.

We share a symbol of peace with those around us, remembering also those from whom we are estranged.

Offertory HymnA collection is taken for the mission and ministry of St Mark’s. If you are a taxpayer, please place your gift in one of the yellow envelopes provided, writing your name and address on the front. If you leave the envelope blank, we are unable to reclaim tax under the ‘Gift Aid’ scheme. Thank you.

For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord; for a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords.

13

Page 15: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

To a life of love in actionhelp us rise and pledge our word.Lead us, Father, into freedom, from despair your world release; that, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace.Show us how through care and goodness fear will die and hope increase. All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned; pride of status, race or schooling dogmas that obscure your plan. In our common quest for justice may we hallow life's brief span. You, creator-God, have written your great name on humankind; for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind; that by our response and service Fred Kaan (1929 - 2009)earth its destiny may find.Tune: Alleluia Dulce Carmen (Tantum Ergo)

the work of our hands.Receive them for the renewal of the world. Amen.

Let us pray (we sit or kneel)

15

Page 17: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

May God be with youand also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them to God.Let us give thanks to our gracious God:It is right to give thanks and praise. It is indeed good and right,to offer you our thanks and praise. For you are the hope of the nations, the builder of the city that is to come.Your love made visible in Jesus Christbrings home the lost, restores the sinnerand gives dignity to the despised. In his face your light shines out, flooding lives with goodness and truth, gathering into one in your kingdoma divided and broken humanity. Therefore with allwho can give voice in your creationwe glorify your name, for ever praising you and singing:Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of truth and love, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he, O blessed is he,who comes in the name of the Lord. Setting from ‘St Anne’s Mass,’Hosanna in the highest. by James Macmillan (b 1959).

Accept our praises, heavenly Father,through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ,and as we follow his exampleand obey his command,grant that by the power of your Holy Spiritthese gifts of bread and winemay be to us his body and his blood;

16

Page 18: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

17

who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks;he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.In the same way, after supperhe took the cup and gave you thanks;he gave it to them, saying:Drink this, all of you;this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for manyfor the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it,in remembrance of me.Therefore, heavenly Father,we remember his offering of himselfmade once for all upon the cross;we proclaim his mighty resurrectionand glorious ascension;we look for the coming of your kingdom, and with this bread and this cupwe make the memorial of Christ your Son our Lord.

Great is the mystery of faith:Christ has died:Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise, and as we eat and drink these holy giftsin the presence of your divine majesty, renew us by your Spirit, inspire us with your loveand unite us in the body of your Son,Jesus Christ our Lord.

18

Page 20: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

A Prayer (for those who wish to remember, but can’t) read by Luke Speddings

God, I have no memory of war.Yet, I remember what it’s like to feel scared;I remember what it’s like to feel sad;I remember what it’s like to lose something precious to me.Help me to use my own memories in understandingwhat this act of remembrance is all aboutso that I can join my prayerswith those who do remember. Amen. Rachel Parkinson.

Act of RemembranceLed by Roy Godden

They shall grow not oldas we that are left grow old.Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sunand in the morning, we will remember them. Laurence Binyon (1869-1943).

We will remember them.

The Silence

The TWO MINUTES is observed.

The Last Post is played.

22

Page 24: ST Web viewBrazilian young people. ... 5 Her foes have become the masters, ... word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart

BlessingGo forth into the world in peace;be of good courage;hold fast that which is good;render to no one evil for evil;strengthen the fainthearted; support the weak;help the afflicted; honour all people;and the blessing of God,Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer,be among you, and all whom you love, both living and departed, now and always. Amen.

Final HymnGod of the nations, God of all who live,How many gave us all they had to give! Now, in remembrance of our nation’s dead,In honesty and pride let prayers be said. Some died sustained by promise of success,Some in defeat’s despair and bitterness; Some died the victims of incompetence:Through years of peril they were our defence. “When you remember us,” we hear them cry,“Take greater care how you let others die;Whatever God you worship, or if none,Pray that the nations learn to live as one.”We lay our wreaths, perform the simple rite,Anxious that we may see in clearer light,As those for whom a nation’s blood was shed,How best to serve the living and the dead.God of the nations, God of friend and foe,Under whose judgement all must come and go,In your compassion show us how to endFear of our foes and make of each a friend.

Fred Pratt-Green (1903-2000)Tune: Eventide.
