Dear Friends:

We hear in the Collect at this Sunday’s Mass the supplication, “Grant, almighty God, through the yearly observances of holy Lent, that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects.” These 40 days and 40 nights are indeed a graced time for all of us as the Church gives us the opportunity to reflect and to continue to receive the richness of the graces that the Lord lays open before us. The Church also provides the disciplines with which to embrace this golden opportunity: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These three disciplines have been a part of the Judeo-Christian tradition since time immemorial. With the grace of these disciplines we begin to push aside all that get in the way between us and the richness of God’s love. Jesus’ 40 days in the desert prepared him for what the Father would ask of him: to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God and to challenge people to repent from their sinfulness and believe in the good news or gospel. The passage of Mark’s Gospel is very spare. From the brief passage we come to know that the Spirit drove or impelled Jesus out into the desert. We know that it was a most challenging time. Jesus was tempted by Satan and was found among wild beasts. However, angels were there to see to his needs. From out of this environment Jesus then came to Galilee to begin his earthly ministry. By this ministry Jesus demonstrates for us what it is to be a disciple. Through our personal and communal prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, may we begin to uncover the riches the Lord lays open before us so that we, like Christ Jesus, can live our baptismal call to be disciples.

With Peace and Joy!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT –FEBRUARY 22, 2015

Estimados amigos:

LITURGY AND MUSIC NEWS

Here are more opportunities to pray together: During these 40 days and nights of Lent, please consider signing up for one hour to be with our Lord in the St.

Martin de Porres Chapel located in the vestibule of St. Joseph Church. Back to the Basics: Lent is a time for Prayer, Fasting, and Alms Giving. We are called to holiness, mutual forgiveness and conversion to bring us closer to Our Lord. Our baptism calls us to repent as we reflect during Lent on the many sacrifices Our Lord made for us that we may live eternally with Him. Stations of the Cross begin this Friday, February 20th, 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church. It reminds us of His footsteps to His crucifixion and draws closer to Our Lord. Please come and join us during this Lenten Journey. The Music Ministry is leading us in chant during Lent to emphasize the solemnity of the Season. Please join us and use the blue cards in the pews for the Sanctus (Holy) and Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Kyrie Eleison ,Christe Eleison, Kyrie Eleison, (Lord, Have Mercy, Christ, Have Mercy, Lord Have Mercy) is chanted at the beginning of Mass. The Gloria is not sung during Lent. WE NEED GIFT BEARERS: We encourage everyone but especially family members to ask an usher to bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar at the Preparation of the Gifts. What a wonderful way to honor your deceased loved one by participating during their Mass.  You can sign up too and sign up sheets are located in the back of both of our churches.

We continue to accept and receive Ministry Sign-Up Sheets.

Please take a Ministry Sign-Up Sheet and become closer to God and your fellow parishioners. You can return your Ministry Sheet by placing it in the Collection Basket, Giving it to an Usher or Bringing it to the Parish Center. Thank you for sharing your gifts with our parish.
