Light Up A Life 2010

I hope that you all have had a lovelysummer despite the variances of theScottish weather, and are lookingforward to autumn, the wintermonths and of course thefestive period.2010 has been a challenging yearfor us as we endeavour to increaseour income in the current financialclimate. Like everyone else, charities have to cope with theeffects of a very difficult economy. Our staff and volunteers areworking extremely hard trying to

generate much needed funds. We have eightshops and are planning to increase this number during the nextfew months. The summer has seen us modernise and rebrandseveral of our shops, the latest being the village of Lochwinnoch.By investing in our shops, we aim to increase our revenue andmake them much more pleasant places for our supporters andvolunteers. The positive news is that we are surviving and stillstriving to excel in the care of our patients and their families. The successes that we make in generating the funds enables us tocontinue to provide a ‘platinum’ service for our patients and theirfamilies. Patients and families are at the very heart of everythingthat we stand for, and our recent regulatory inspection reportsupported that when we were awarded 6’s in all inspectedthemes, this being the highest score of excellent in all areas. Our staff, volunteers and loyal supporters are to becongratulated in achieving such a high standard of service. We are working in partnership with Ardgowan and the Prince& Princess of Wales Hospices in the Butterfly Project, which is anew and innovative project funded by the Big Lottery to supportchildren and young people affected by bereavement and loss. This is a five year project which will provide a service forGlasgow, Renfrewshire and Inverclyde. Butterflies at St Vincent’sare working in very close collaboration with the Hospice’sFamily Support Team providing this service across Renfrewshire.Recently young adults from a local high school, who had allsuffered a loss in their family, participated in an eight weekprogramme, which was well received by both the young adults, parents and teaching staff. This is exciting and innovative workto enhance the lives of young adults and children. So, as you can see our patients and their families continue to beat the very heart of everything that we do. A special thanks toall those loyal supporters who have worked beside us all year.We all share a commitment to care with compassion andendeavour to work to provide the best for all who use ourservices. Please continue to support us and help us to continueto excel in providing care to the people of Renfrewshire.Kind Regards

Trudy Lafferty“My precious moments were the births

of my beautiful grandchildren.”

Children and young people oftenfeel forgotten about when adeath occurs. Parents, rightly so,want to protect their children fromthe pain they are experiencing -yet grief is a natural part of lifeafter death. Children appear todip in and out of grief, at timesthey may seem happy then sadand this can be confusing forparents and carers. However ifthey are allowed to talk abouttheir feelings with those closest tothem in a natural way, we havefound they can move throughtheir grief and engage withlife again. Our project aims tosupport families andprofessionals in achievingthis goal.Debbie Brownlee, the ProjectCoordinator, has had many years

experience in children’scommunity palliative care andshe is also a trained counsellor.Butterflies @ St Vincent’s aims todevelop a community servicethat offers:• Individual support

• Group therapeutic support

• Family support

• Advice and information forparents and professionals

• Education and training forvolunteers and professionals

• Signposting/referral to otherservices where appropriate

During the summer – beginningof May till June 2010 – with thehelp of St Benedict’s High Schoolin Linwood, we were able to runour very first bereavement

support group for youngpeople. Over 8 weeks, it waswell attended and receivedby the young people involvedand was voted a success bythem, their carers andeducational staff.Presently the Butterflyproject aims to recruit newvolunteers we can train towork with us in offering aservice to the communitiesaround the Hospices and toschools. If you feel youcould be a Butterflyvolunteer and havechildren or young people’sexperience and/orcounselling experience andwould like to be involvedplease contact Debbieon 07527 297 824.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the health and well beingof children and young people, St Vincent’s are currently involvedin an innovative new project. The Butterfly project – “Butterflies @St Vincent’s”, is funded by the Big Lottery and aims to supportchildren and young people affected by life threatening illness inthe family. It has been set up across 3 Hospices, St Vincent’s,Ardgowan in Greenock and The Prince & Princess of Walesin Glasgow.

A TrulyPrecious Gift …

LEGACY DONATIONS

Leaving a Legacy in yourWill is a wonderful way tobenefit the people andcauses you care about.

When it comes to making a Will it’s only fair that your familyand friends come first. However, many people wish to find aplace in their Will for a cause dear to their heart: a causelike St Vincent’s Hospice.A gift in your Will could make a huge difference. Withoutdonations left through legacies many charities and valuedfacilities like St Vincent’s Hospice would simply not exist. Here at the Hospice we witness daily, the bravery and strengthof our patients and their families. Their courage inspires us toprovide support, wellbeing and care for all.Every Legacy is precious and vital in ensuring that all thefantastic work we do here may continue, now and in years tocome. You don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference.A gift, large or small, is valuable and can ensure our continueddedication and support to everyone who needs us.For further information please contact the Lorraine Valentine fromthe Fundraising Team on 01505 705635 or [email protected]

What? The Community Nurse Specialist Team (CNS)provides specialist palliative care adviceand support for patients with life-threateningconditions and their families. The serviceembraces the overall ethos of the Hospiceand is provided in the patient’s own home. The C.N.S. facilitates specialist palliativecare interventions in tandem with CommunityHealth Providers and liaises closely with theHospice medical team, the interdisciplinaryteam and wider multidisciplinary hospitalteams. The role includes support for localcare homes and offers education for otherdisciplines within and out with the Hospice.

The team consists of three specialist nurseswho have extensive experience in palliativecare and who, collectively, have PostGraduate Qualifications in Palliative Care, the Specialist Practitioner Qualification andAdvanced Communication/CounsellingSkills Accreditation. Each team member iscommitted to ongoing professional educationand development in keeping with changeand improvement to care provision andservice efficacy.

Where? The nurses are based in the Hospice itselfand are very much part of St Vincent’s team.

Patients are referred to the service via GP’s,District Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialists, hospital and community professionals. They can also self refer providing theGP is in support of this.

Referral Criteria:

• Advice on symptom management

• The patients condition is deteriorating

• Complex psychological, spiritual or socialissues are detrimental to the patient andfamily’s wellbeing

• Short term intervention by the team duringa transitional or challenging period in thepatient’s disease trajectory eg. followingdiagnosis, during chemotherapy

People with life limiting disease can havelong periods of stability and remission. Theyare, however, often faced with continualchange and adjustment as the diseaseprogresses. Although planning ahead isessential to avoid crisis, unexpected

problems can arise at any time of the day ornight. With this in mind, collaboration withall relevant health professionals is crucial toour aim of providing individual, holistic careand the maximisation of Quality of Life.

Living with a life limiting illness can causeemotional turmoil as those affected strugglewith the effects of grief, loss, adjustmentand change.

Being with and supporting people who areexperiencing emotional and spiritual painforms a large part of the C.N.S. role andthis requires skill, sensitivity and compassion.

Ongoing support from colleagues coupledwith Clinical Supervision is crucial to themaintenance of their personal andprofessional integrity and this enables themto maintain the highest standard of care forwhich the Hospice is renowned.
