Second Sunday of Easter April 23, 2017

Frequently over the past several years, we have spoken about the

need for mercy in our lives. Taking our cue from Pope Francis,

we have spoken about how generous and merciful God is to us.

In fact, mercy is the defining attribute of who God is. God

shows power through mercy. God shows justice through mercy.

God shows wisdom through mercy.

The message of the mercy of God is the key to understanding

Jesus. As Pope Francis said, Jesus is the face of God’s mercy.

Through his actions, his teachings and his words, Jesus shows us

how truly loving and merciful God is.

This is the Good News that we are invited to share! Last year, we celebrated the Jubilee

Year of Mercy, and I went to World Youth Day in Poland, whose theme was “Blessed are

the merciful.” But mercy is not contained in one year. Because the year of mercy is over

does not mean that we stop being merciful and compassionate! Mercy matters in our

broken world, and our world can be transformed through this message of mercy.

Today as we continue our Easter celebration, we also celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday.

Instituted by Pope John Paul II, in this mass we celebrate in a special way what we really

celebrate every weekend: the great and infinite mercy of God. It can be difficult for us to

believe this. How can God really love me when I have done X, Y or Z? How can God really

love me because I am A, B or C? The message we hear today is that God loves YOU

personally, infinitely and unconditionally. It is we who set conditions on God’s love and

mercy, not God. We are invited to accept that into our hearts, just as Thomas accepted

Jesus into his heart when he appeared to him after the Resurrection. And when we receive

that loving mercy of God for ourselves, what else can we do but share it with those around

us? Let us give thanks to God for this great gift that

can free us from shame and doubt and allow us to

live in the light and glory of the Risen Lord.

The main guideline for these gatherings, which take place in many countries throughout the world, is the ‘Golden Rule’, which invites us to do to others what we would like to be done to us. It is an opportunity to experience what happens in a day-to-day life when we have listening, gift of self and sharing as the basis for our relationships.

Poor Didymus, dubbed “Doubting Thomas” for the ages. We hear his story again in today’s Gospel from the evangelist John. On the evening of the first day of the week, the disciples--all except Didymus--have locked themselves away for fear of the Jews when Jesus shows up in their company and shows them his hands and his side. The disciples subsequently tell Didymus that they’ve seen the Lord, but he doubts

the news. “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side,” he says, “I will not believe.” A week later the disciples are again locked away, but this time, Thomas is with them when Jesus, showing up once more, turns directly to Thomas and invites him to garner the evidence he said he needed. Thomas no longer needs it, though, prompting Jesus to say, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

OK, but what about the rest of the disciples? In Mark’s account of the Resurrection, after Jesus shows himself to Mary Magdalene, “…she went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.” I don’t know about you, but this sounds pretty Thomas-esque to me. And in John’s account, what about Peter and John

specifically? When Mary tells them that the tomb is empty, “Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first…” Don’t both scenarios align with the locked room? In all three instances, friends tell friends news of Jesus, and each time, the person or persons on the receiving end needs something more. Doubting Thomas? Doubting everybody, if you ask me. And present company included…

Yeah. I’ve had my share of doubting moments. Perhaps you can relate. You know. It goes something like Jesus, if you do this and this and this for me, I’ll know you’re with me. And when these things don’t happen: Christ, where are you? What I need to understand and embrace more fully, though, is that he is always with me, just like he said he would be. In that locked room, Jesus is there with his friends whether he’s in

the room or not. As one of my old reference books puts it, “Jesus is just as much with the disciples when they do not perceive his presence as he is when they do perceive his presence.” It’s telling I think--and in a very good way--that Jesus repeats himself three times in this week’s Gospel text. “Peace be with you,” he says when he first appears in the locked room. “Peace be with you,” he says again as he breathes on his friends extending the Spirit to forgive or retain sins. “Peace be with you,” he says again when he shows up

a week later, this time with Thomas in the mix. How fitting that on Divine Mercy Sunday, our Risen Lord greets us--but more so gifts us--with his peace. On this day, and on all days: “Jesus, I trust in you.”

Private Prayer in the Church Please enter the church for private prayer through the Parish Center during regular office hours.

Finding Your Way Around Restrooms: Public restrooms are located in the narthex and Parish Center.

Parish Center: Staff offices and meeting rooms are housed in the Parish Center. Reception for the public is located in this building to the west of the church and to the back of the courtyard.

Ozanam Room: Large meeting and activity room on the first floor at the end of the hall.

Portail Room: Small conference room on the first floor across from the kitchen.

St. Vincent Room: Large meeting room on the lower level.

Narthex: Large gathering space at the main doors on Webster Avenue.

Sacristy: Room behind the west side of the sanctuary where the priest and other ministers prepare for liturgical celebrations. This room also provides access to the Parish Center.

Parking Parking behind the church is permitted for parishioners and guests attending weekend masses and Friday wedding rehearsals. Parking at all other times without a proper DePaul University faculty/staff permit is subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Public parking is available at the university garage on Sheffield (at Fullerton). Tickets may be validated for two hours at Parish Center reception, or at the Sheffield entrance of the church while attending church-related functions.

Disabled Access A ramped sidewalk can be accessed from the rear parking lot to the Sheffield entrance of the church. There is a ramped access to the sacristy from the church which allows access to the Parish Center through the sacristy. All of our restrooms are disabled-accessible.

Mother Seton Food Pantry and Sandwich Kitchen Located in the northeast corner of the church (access is through the wheelchair door on Sheffield), the sandwich kitchen is open Monday-Saturday from 8:15-10 a.m. The food pantry is open on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering in the morning, or to help prepare meals or shop, please contact Katie Leifer at [email protected].

Celebration of the Sacraments at St. Vincent de Paul

Reconciliation: Saturday afternoon, 4:15-4:50 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room near the Sheffield entrance of the church, or you can call the Parish Center for an appointment.

Baptism: Please contact Mary Carter ([email protected]) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born.

Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season.

Marriage: Please contact Mary Carter ([email protected]) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish.

For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary confirms all reservations for weddings.

Confirmation: Catholic adults who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to contact Rebecca at [email protected]. Confirmation preparation sessions are held Sunday evenings

February through May.

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program that prepares adults to receive the sacrament(s) of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. Preparation sessions are held on Sundays from 11:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and celebration of the sacraments occurs at the Easter Vigil mass. To learn more or to enroll in the RCIA program, please contact Rebecca at [email protected].
