From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
Baptism of the Lord: This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord. With this Feast, the Christmas season comes to an end and Ordinary Time begins. Jesus was baptized, like we were all baptized too. Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was sinless, and yet in a way to identify with our human nature, he insisted on being baptized. It was a moment of revelation of the Trinity. The Father spoke: “You are my beloved son; with you I am well pleased.” The Holy Spirit descended on him. Jesus begins his public ministry with this revelation and affirmation to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal and uplift, to wage a battle with evil and sin in the world. As we journey with Christ into his public min-istry of the Kingdom of God, we might want to think about our own baptism. Baptism is not just an event; it is a way of life. It is a state of grace and new life. We live the life of Baptism throughout our lives. We were anointed at our baptism, freed from sin and empow-ered to be “priest, prophet, and king.” We also prom-ised to renounce sin and embrace faith and the com-munity and family called the Catholic Church. The light of Christ was given to us from the paschal candle, inviting us to be enlightened and to radiate the light of Christ to others. A white garment was given to us as a sign of purity and dignity of new life. We are supposed to keep this garment, our soul, unstained until we are called to enter the everlasting life in heaven. Our bap-tism was filled with power of God and the discipleship of Jesus. How are we doing in these areas? Do we con-tinue to live a life of baptismal grace given to us years ago? At the celebration of Jesus’ baptism, we might do well meditating on our own baptism and what we are called to be and do.
The Moveable Feasts: Around this time, the Church invites us to be reminded of the feast days of the New Year as a way of getting us to look forward to these divine mysteries. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10. After five Sundays of Lent, Palm Sunday falls on March 20. Easter is on March 27. After six Sundays of Easter, the Ascension of the Lord is on May 08. Pentecost Sunday is on May 15. Holy Trinity is on May 22. The Body and Blood of Christ is on May 29. Christ the King is November 20 (the Year of Mercy ends this day). The First Sunday of Advent is on November 27.
Repair My Church (RMC): Please keep this project in your generous spirit of stewardship. We want to do three things coming summer of 2016: paint the church,
change the carpet, and refurbish the pews. The cost of these three items is: $160,000. Please help repair our church! It’s God’s house we are talking about! I shall be putting in the bulletin from time to time the names of donors to RMC as a way of thanking and acknowl-edging their generosity.
New Year 2016: Ten days are gone in the New Year! How are you enjoying this New Year? Is this New Year treating you with kindness and gentleness? T. S. Eliot says, “For last year’s words belong to last year’s language; And next year’s words await another voice.” It may be a good idea to find this new voice and new language for this New Year.
Urgent! Stewardship Appeal!: There are just too many one dollar bills in the Sunday collection. Would you prayerfully consider giving weekly a minimum of $5 or $10 for God’s work in our parish, while others continue to give $25 or $50. Please could you think about it as a good thing to do in 2016? St. Veronica needs your help; it depends on your generosity. There is no other source for our parish!
Giving Angel: The gifts you gave generously through the Giving Angel went to St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen on Grand Ave, our St. Veronica Parish Vin-cent de Paul, St. Catherine Center of St. Vincent de Paul on Grand Ave, and Catholic worker Hospitality House in San Bruno. I would like to thank all those who donated to bring the Christmas cheer to many. Also, many thanks to Nita Ricotta, Mary Beaudry, Barbara Lozar, and June Heise for all the good work connected with the Giving Angel.
Humor: A Politician’s Position: A Senator in the USA was once asked about his attitude toward whisky. “If you mean the demon drink that poisons the mind, pollutes the body, desecrates family life, and inflames sinners, then I’m against it. But if you mean the elixir of a New Year toast, the shield against winter chill, the taxable potion that puts needed funds into public cof-fers to comfort little crippled children, then I’m for it. This is my position, and I will not compromise.” Enjoy the first few days/weeks of this New Year! May this New Year generate in us a new mind, a new heart, and a new spirit! Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Thank you for your Generosity!
As occurs each year, participants in the St. Veronica Giving Angel went above and be-yond in helping our neighbors in need during the Advent season. Parishioners donated scores of gift cards and dozens of wrapped gifts, all of which have
gone or will go to help our neighbors. The Giving Angel supports Catherine Center, the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, Catholic Hospitality House, and our own St. Vincent de Paul pantry.
In addition to the monetary donations, our St. Vincent de Paul pantry received hundreds of non-perishable food items which will benefit the more than 35 clients who receive food assistance. Keep in mind that the need for help doesn’t end with the Christmas season. Our St. Vincent de Paul pantry accepts non-perishable food donations all year.
Warmest congratulations and God’s blessings to
Victor & Concepcion Blanco on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary, celebrated December 26, 2015, at St. Veronica in the
company of their family & friends.
Reflecting on the Word
The Baptism of the Lord
Today ends the Christmas season. We put away the singing of Christmas carols, like “Joy to the World,” but we don’t stop living their words. The Lord has “saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spir-it, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior” (Titus 2:5b-6) - through Jesus Christ, to whom the heavenly voice in Luke’s Gospel is addressed, “You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.” Because we put on Christ in baptism, we too are beloved daughters and sons of God. The Holy Spirit has been poured out on us. We do more than point the way to Christ like John the Baptizer; we are called to live Jesus. Baptism makes us heralds of glad tidings who an-nounce that God is with us, offering comfort and speak-ing tenderly. Our lives proclaim “here is your God” in small ways that speak loudly, for nothing is small in God’s service, St. Francis de Sales says. Paying attention to every person we meet, sharing our resources like offer-ing a smile, a call, an e-mail, a text, or a wave that acknowledges the other - all proclaim, “God is here.” They can lift the valley of depression, topple the moun-tain of arrogance, smooth the rough ways of hurt or fear, and make the desert of loneliness bloom. By living our baptism we reveal the glory of the Lord for all to see and enjoy. And if you are stuck in a valley or struggling with some ruggedness in your life, listen for the voice of God that spoke at our baptism: “You are my beloved. With you I am well pleased.” Be a living carol that sings joy to the world, the Lord is come for all. For prayerful reflection and discussion:
♦ Do you believe that you are God’s beloved daughter or son? How do you show it? If not, what gets in the way?
♦ Name five concrete ways you can be a herald of the message that God is in our midst, that the Lord is come. - adapted from Living the Word
