HOUSTON, TEXAS JANUARY 24, 2016

Today’s gospel reading from St. Luke took us to the synagogue at Nazareth where Jesus gave a summary of his mis-sion: ‘…to bring glad #dings to the poor. … to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.’ (Luke 1: 14 – 21.)

On Sunday December 27, 2015—the feast day of Holy Family, Deacon David Johnson preached about ‘A Family as Mission of Mercy.’ He said that mercy is the perfec#on of love. What Jesus wants from each of us is that we love [others] the same way that He has loved us. Jesus’ love goes beyond forgiving our sins; He died on the cross; he be-came the sacrifice that takes away our sins. As we love others, we must forgive them too, we must sacrifice our ego and become an expression of the love of God. “How can we expect mercy from God if we don't show mercy to oth-ers?” Asked Deacon Johnson.

Truly, “To proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Luke 1:19) is to con#nue Jesus’ mission to the poor, cap#ves, blind, oppressed, and to be merciful. Jesus has given us a command: "Be merciful, just as your Heavenly Father is merciful." (Luke 6:36)
