"Little girl, I say to you, arise!"
Mark 5:41

This weekend we come to the half way point in the year. Praise be to God for what has been, and what lies ahead!
We are more and more moving out of the limits and confines of the past year and a half. Folks are returning to Mass and the sacrament of Reconciliation in wonderful ways. We will begin the Sunday breakfasts again in the Padre next month, starting on Sunday, July 11. And as most have been vaccinated, we are finding they are coming without masks and that has been quite freeing.
We will continue to broadcast the Mass into McCallin Hall for a few more weeks, but that too will end in August as we get back to needing the fuller hall for both Religious Education as well as other typical ministries and programs. So if you have not gotten your vaccination yet I would encourage you to do so this coming month.
Also, with this last week of June, we come to the conclusion of Fr. John’s assignment here at St. Thomas More. Officially, he begins at Most Precious Blood on Thursday, July 1, although I think he will be here for a few days past that.
We also welcome our new assistant, Fr. Matt Hartley, who similarly begins his assignment on Thursday, July 1. I worked with Father during my time at the Cathedral and am very much looking forward to his presence here.
We are also blessed to have received an appointment for another deacon, Tim Hathaway, to join our clergy here. We are especially fortunate in that we are getting another deacon without losing one of the good men we already have here. I hope you make both Fr. Matt and Dcn. Tim welcome and that they quickly come to know the grace and hospitality this community does so well.
Perhaps the first thing they will be able to see you at will be the big celebration on Friday, July 2. I wrote about it last week in my reflection and you can find more information on page 4 of this week’s bulletin. Come one, come all and have a blessed start to our new beginning!

a reflection on today’s readings
Grow as a Disciple“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” It’s likely we’ve heard and seen Jesus’ reassuring words or even shared them with others. When I read the story of Jairus and his daughter, I thought of a man with whom I spoke recently.
As his lungs failed him during a bout with coronavirus, doctors advised him to say good-bye to his wife and daughters before they placed him on a ventilator. “I was expecting to wake up in heaven,” he said, recalling the moment not as one of fear or panic, but of deep peace.
In today’s Gospel passage, Jairus had that kind of “fearless faith” as well, placing his daughter’s life wholly in Jesus’ hands even as others in the crowd ridiculed him. When we pray or ask for God’s healing, we can’t know the outcome. But we can pray for the gifts of faith and courage, placing our lives in God’s loving hands.
Go EvangelizeWhen I was a child, my aunt would always encourage us to make the sign of the cross when we passed an ambulance or accident scene. In her concern for the strangers at the side of the road, my aunt was giving us a lesson in compassion, which stands in marked contrast to the crowds who ridiculed Jairus as he desperately sought help for his daughter.
The Church has a rich tradition of intercessory prayer, encouraging us to pray for the needs of others. Today’s readings remind me that we can share our faith by praying for others who are sick, dying, grieving or struggling in some way. Likewise, we can ask others to pray for us, trusting that God will hear our prayers.
PrayDo you ever offer to pray for someone and then completely forget? Try writing each person’s name on a Post-it and placing it on your bedside table.
Other ideas: Pray the Rosary while driving or exercising, devoting a decade to each person; include prayers for others when you say Grace before meals; as soon as you offer to pray for someone, drop everything and do it!
