On August 4th, the centenary of the outbreak of the
First World War is commemorated in many ways
across the country. Westminster Abbey will mark
the centenary by moving from light into darkness.
The Abbey will be lit so that the light falls away from the East to
the West until a procession reaches the Grave of the Unknown
Warrior. There a single remaining candle will be extinguished at
11.00pm to mark the moment of the declaration of war. This
moving ceremony is broadcast on BBC 2.
You can also take part in Lights Out, from your home
or workplace, by switching off your lights from 10pm
to 11pm, leaving only a single light or candle lit. This
will be a UK wide moment of reflection. You can even
stay informed of the different events taking place by
following #WW1Aug4 on Twitter.
A number of events are planned locally. At St Thomas church,
we will hold a short reflective time of commemoration at our war
memorial, this will be at 8.00pm where we too will light a
commemorative candle and offer prayerful remembrance. Wigan
Parish church hold a commemoration service at 9.30 pm with
ceremony at the cenotaph at 10.30 pm. Ashton Library are
holding a commemorative exhibition between August 4th and
December 31st.

5 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine August 2014
Our War Memorial in St Thomas churchyard was dedicated by
the Bishop of Liverpool, the Right Reverend Francis
Chavasse in February 1921. One can only imagine how
moving it would be for The Bishop on such occasions, as
he lost two of his four sons in WW1, both in 1917.
Between them his four sons received 3 Military Crosses
and 1 Croix de Guerre. Noel, one of the sons who died
received the only double Victoria Cross awarded in the
war.
As we look at the names on the War Memorial we
see there ordinary men of Ashton, who without doubt
also performed many acts of bravery and heroism.
We thank God for all those whom we remember as
we commemorate the World changing day 100 years
ago that began the conflicts of of WW1.
In John 15:12-13 Jesus says, “This is my commandment, that
you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater
love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

St. Thomas’ C of E Primary School
Goodbye
Our SATs exam results were made public on Tuesday 8th July and revealed some amazing achievements by our pupils with overall excellent grades. This represented a combination of the teaching delivered and the individual effort made by each and every one of our learners. Mrs Jones and all the staff at St. Thomas’ would like to say well done and congratulations to each of our special children and wish further success to all, especially our year 6 students who will be moving to new senior schools. You will be missed and we hope you all come back and visit us often. Also congratulations to all our former pupils that continued in education and have this year graduated from various universities across the UK. Incredibly it is now 17 years since you started at St Thomas’ School and we all would like to express our best wishes for your future careers. Wishing you all a lovely summer! God bless, Elaine Mateus

Thank You for these Collections. So we may know God better And feel His quiet power, Let us daily keep in silence A meditation hour— For to understand God’s greatness And use His gifts each day The soul must team to meet Him In a meditative way, For nature’s greatest forces Are found in quiet things Like softly falling snowflakes Drifting down on angels wings, Or petals dropping soundlessly From a lovely full blown rose, So God comes closest to us When our souls are in repose.

Summer fun in the vicarage garden
We had a few events planned for July falling in the same week just as the good weather started. A group of young people were leading the parade service on Sunday 6th and so we had our final practice on the previous morning. We decided to set up the water slide ready for the following day and so after a quick lunch we laid out
the slide and they tested it... for three hours! The next day, the service went very well. The theme was Micah 6:8; 'What does the Lord require of me? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.' The focus was on the way that we behaved towards others as depicted in three dramas with some commentary from our favourite puppet duo, Harry & Larry. The talk, however, challenged us to think whether the people who make our clothes are treated justly. Each member of the congregation was given a luggage label with the Micah verse on one side and a pledge for them to consider committing to on the other: I pledge that the next item of clothing I buy will be one of the following:
#mynextbuy will be Fairtrade #mynextbuy will be from a charity shop #mynextbuy will not be for 3 months with #mynextbuy I will give away an item of clothing I
own What would you choose your next buy to be? After the service and over the next four hours, we had 26 young people enjoying themselves with a variety of watery activities and a BBQ. Most of us ended up getting at least a little wet despite a cordoned off 'safe zone'.
13 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine August 2014
On Wednesday, Weenies enjoyed another sunny day as they had their end of year Teddy Bear's Picnic and said goodbye to those moving onto Reception in September. Thursday, yet another sunny day, was our last Messy Church for 2013/4, with Friend of Jesus, the theme. Nearly 80 of us spent time making loom band bracelets, marbling paper, mixing some fizzy wine (well juice actually), playing Sudoku with these symbols to remind us that God loves me, I have sinned, Jesus died for me, so what am I going to do about it? We were adding our handprints to a heart of friendship, making photo frames, decorating a biscuit for a friend, rolling marbles to make some amazing pictures, going fishing (like some of the disciples did) and wrapping volunteers up in toilet rolls as we thought about Lazarus. On Saturday 12th July, a group of young people (and some not so young) washed cars outside the church hall. We worked hard as the sun dried the water very quickly! This was the last of four car washes and other fundraising events raising money to twin our church and church hall toilets and to pay for the activities at the youth camp in September. They have collected a total of £360 to twin 6 toilets (two in St Thomas', two in St Luke's and two in the church hall) in 6 different countries which will enable hundreds of people somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the toilet. The next event that St Thomas' young people are preparing for is, Hungry & Homeless, a 24 hour sponsored camp outside the church hall (although sleeping inside) from 6pm on 29th August. No mobile phones or other technologies will be allowed, or food other than breakfast (porridge or cornflakes) and lunch (baked potato with cheese or beans). If you would like to sponsor them, please sign the sheet at the back of both of our churches, call in to the vicarage or see them on 29th or 30th. All money raised will go the Fit for the Future campaign and The Brick. Oh, and our next Messy Church is on September 25th at St Thomas' school.

3 Peaks on 2 Wheels We have been so grateful for the thoughts and prayers of the people of St Thomas’ Church over the last two years. Daisy has been on the prayer list and we take a lot of comfort from the support we get from people who don’t even know us personally. We wanted to share with you what we are doing this year in honour of Daisy and her bravery.
‘Team Daisy’ - Paul Easton (Daisy’s Daddy), Adam and Nigel Walsh (Daisy’s Uncles), Alex Reeves, Andy Dunleavy and Rob Everett – will be beginning their challenge on the 9th August by climbing Ben Nevis. They will then cycle more than 250 miles to Scafell Pike. Once they have climbed England’s highest peak,
they will cycle a further 200+ miles to the foot of Snowdon on the 16th before reaching their final summit! It’s just short of 500 miles cycled and 3407 metres climbed in just 9 days! This is all in aid of Ronald McDonald House Charities. They provide a free ‘Home away from Home’ for the families of seriously ill children. It costs the charity £25 per room to house a family for a night, and running costs top £500,000 per year, per house! That cost is borne purely by fundraising, and as a family who has benefited from their services, we feel it is vital to help with these costs and give the charity a huge THANK YOU! We would love to raise the £2275 which would cover Daisy’s lengthy stay in The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital over last winter and help us show our gratitude. To find more about Ronald McDonald House Charities and what they do, please visit www.rmhc.org.uk.
15 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine August 2014
For those of you that don’t know us, Daisy was born on 15th April 2012; however, things did not go according to plan. She experienced difficulties and had to be brought back to life by the staff at the hospital, after being without oxygen for some considerable time. This resulted in severe damage to Daisy’s brain and a very poor prognosis. Since that day, Daisy has been in and out of hospitals and we as a family have been told on many occasions to
brace ourselves for the worst. Daisy, however, has had different ideas and continues to battle on each day usually with a smile of defiance on her face. There are still times when Daisy's condition can deteriorate quickly, and last year was one such occasion. Daisy became very ill and was sent, via Wigan Hospital, to The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as her condition worsened. Needless to say this was a time of grave concern for us; however, due to the existence of Ronald McDonald House, we were able to stay with Daisy when she needed us most. During a 3 month stay which included several operations and critical moments, we were able to be together at all times and this enabled us to be on hand to make decisions and to comfort Daisy no matter what time it was, day or night. This is why we are determined to help fund the facilities so that other families can have use of them in their time of need. Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for giving what you can. For full details visit www.donate4daisy.co.uk or donate online at www.justgiving.com/Donate4Daisy2014 or by using a Sponsor Form available at the back of church. Love and thanks from Paul, Heidi and Daisy (and all the family)

Edge of Tomorrow (12A) Directed by Doug Liman Stars: Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Brendan Gleeson, Bill Paxton, Jonas
Armstrong, Tony Way, Kick Gurry, Franz Drameh, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Noah Taylor, and Lara Pulver In a Nutshell: There's nothing like a cool science fiction conceit, a cool
concept... and whilst Edge of Tomorrow has a similar one to a lot of my recent favourites from Looper to Source Code, it does enough new and interesting things with it to make it sparkly and new and just utterly terrific from start to finish. For starters, it's the best role Cruise has been given in a long while (sure he rocked the house down in Rock of Ages, but I wouldn't call that challenging) as he makes a utterly believable transition from selfless wimp to futuristic hero and hard nut, whilst Emily Blunt unleashes her tough side as the action icon of the year, vulnerable yet very very tough. Great support is given by Gleeson, Paxton and others... but the real meat and joy is in the concept and execution and the effects. The creature effects and creatures themselves are nothing short of creepy and stunning, mixing the nastiness of Starship Troopers with the visual wow of Darkest Hour. The Groundhog Day style shenanigans of the way the story plays out to its conclusion and what happens along the way is witty, dramatic and very cool, reminding me of why I love Groundhog Day as well as recent imitators like About Time and Source Code. A great sci-fi film can sneak up on you and that's exactly what this has done.... it's superb! Rating: 10/10
22 Jump Street (15) Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller Stars: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube, Peter Stormare,
Amber Stevens, Wyatt Russell, Jillian Bell, Lucas Brothers, Nick Offerman, and Jimmy Tatro In a Nutshell: You really have to love a sequel which knows what it's doing, it
knows it's a sequel and what comes with that territory, and coming straight off Muppets Most Wanted which devoted a musical number to acknowledging that it could never be quite as good... you have 22 Jump Street where the running gag is everything is the same but bigger and louder. Once again, the Lego/ Cloudy team of Lord and Miller bring up more comedy gold with stars Tatum and Hill on equally fine and furiously fantastic form this time round, aided once more by a terrifically angry Ice Cube and a gloriously sardonic Nick Offerman (the glorious Ron Swanson in TV's Parks and Recreation)... joined this time by sequel and action blockbuster stalwart Peter Stormare and
31 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine August 2014
a very enjoyable turn by Kurt's son Wyatt as a dumb jock. The gags come thick and fast, with clever references and visual imagery high on the menu and a lot of laughs coming from side to side.... it perfectly does what it sets out to do, it's bigger and crazier while maybe not 100% matching the sweetness of the first it can stand alongside as another comedy action cracker, and a lot of it is definetly down to the chemistry between the central pair of Tatum and Hill. If you loved the first one, it's as the movie's one big gag says... more of the same, oh but what same, and what fun! Rating: 8/10

THE WAY I SEE IT: What’s in a word? Canon David Winter ponders the power in words… We were in the supermarket queue. The woman in front of me was greeted by a friend, who asked how she was.
‘Well,’ she replied, ‘I’ve been under the doctor again with my legs’. Her friend knew what she meant. I knew what she meant and the woman at the till knew what she meant. But try translating that into, say,
French: ‘J’etais sous le medecin encore avec mes jambes’. Now it becomes utterly baffling, and possibly indecent.
Words are funny things and our use of them even funnier. Most languages, and even local areas, have ways of saying things that are peculiar (in the proper meaning of the word). I
remember years ago driving past a scrawled sign at the side of a major road in the north-east where there had been several nasty accidents. ‘Gan canny, hinnes’, it advised. Clearly ‘foreigners’ were welcome to kill
themselves if they chose. Mostly our little misunderstandings of what is said or written don‘t
matter, but sometimes they matter a great deal. We ask, in the Lord‘s Prayer, that God will not ‘lead us into temptation‘. Why on earth would he want to do that? Later in the Bible we are told quite clearly ‘God
himself tempts no one. But one is tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it’ (James 1:13). The word translated ’temptation’ in the Lord’s Prayer really means ’tested’ - but every time anyone has
tried to change it we all complain. Familiarity always trumps accuracy! It’s also true of familiar sayings. ‘The exception proves the rule’ is
commonly taken to mean that a single exception demonstrates the accuracy of the proposition. In fact, of course, it’s the old meaning of ‘proves’, which is (again) ‘tests’. The exception tests the theory. If there’s a single exception, then there’s no ‘rule’.

In practice, we assume that people understand - and if they don’t, they very quickly learn. Normally it doesn’t matter. One could hear what the
woman said in the supermarket queue and remain baffled by her meaning (as many younger people would be) without it affecting us at all.
But sometimes it’s important. For instance, Jesus didn’t ‘come back from the dead’. He rose. Believe me, there’s a big
difference!

Divine illustration….
A teacher was observing her classroom of young children while they drew. As she came to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."
The teacher paused and said gently, "But no one knows what God looks like."
Without missing a beat, the girl replied with perfect composure: “They will in a minute."
So far so good
So far today, God, I've done all right. I haven't gossiped, haven't lost my temper, haven't been greedy, grumpy, nasty, selfish, or over-indulgent. I'm really glad about that. But in a
few minutes, God, I'm going to get out of bed and from then on I'm going to need a lot more help. Thank you. In Jesus name. Amen
