My Dear Family of St. Therese, “THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME!)
We had a wonderful trip to Colorado! The weather was perfect (one afternoon of rain). It was hot, but as they say, “It’s a dry heat!” ( like an oven!) I told everyone that at 64 I reached my Peak, sadly Pike got there before me! Yes, we did sing “America the Beautiful” in English and Polish. It was her visit to Pike’s Peak that inspired Katheryn Bates to write that beautiful song. We also visited the Basilica in Denver, the Cathedral in Colorado Springs and the Chapel at the Air Force Academy. It seems that whenever Fr. Mariusz and I go on vacation, they have the World Cup for Soccer. It was interesting to see that when the National Anthem was played for the different countries, no matter what their political troubles in their homeland, not one player knelt. I guess they believed that it was not the time or place to express personal opinions. (Another interesting thing was that it may have taken over two hundred years, but the Americans were actually cheering for the English!) It was great to return home and have Jim Ryan visit us. It was like an extended vacation. For those who were at Mass and attended Jim’s “Sunday Afternoon Talk” know what I am talking about. He spoke about how it is our choice to be happy or not, the opportunities that come each day and our options on how we face them. This weekend we welcome our friends from the Holy Land, our Bethlehem Christian Olivewood Carvers. Each year they visit to afford us the opportunity to help them and the Church in Bethlehem financially. Be sure to visit them in the lobby of the church.
As August begins, continue to have a blessed and safe summer! Sincerely in Christ,

Remembering a Loved One
Memorials
As we bring our gifts to the altar at Mass we also bring our joy, pain, sorrow and love. We
believe that God accepts all of this from us and gives us salvation through His Son in return.
If you would like to remember a loved one in our Eucharistic celebrations
please contact our office. 668-2200 Another thoughtful way to remember a loved one is by donating a Memorial
in the form of a liturgical item to be used in worship at St. Therese. The ongoing needs of our parish enable us to offer a
variety of such items for memorialization. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Fr. Thomas Murray 668-2200.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
WEEKLY MIRACLE
This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). Today we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gospel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the miracle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When they had eaten, there was some left over, as the Lord had said (2 Kings 4:42-44). Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-6). Gospel — Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted (John 6:1-15). Catholics for Freedom of Religion

Religious Liberty & Adoption Services: Faith-based adoption agencies in Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Illinois, and California, including Catholic Charities adoption agencies, have shut down because of anti-discrimination laws or funding in these states. The agencies' policies of placing children only with married husband and wife couples have conflicted with expanding legal requirements to place children with same-sex couples. These faith-based agencies around the country have long provided adoption and foster care services to the neediest of children. Catholic Charities specializes in the most difficult placements, including older, abused children and children with special needs. When legislatures in these states failed to carve out a religious exemption for these agencies, they were faced with a difficult choice: violate its conscience, or close its doors. Critics of the church argue that no group has a constitutional right to a government contract to provide services. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) responds, "It's true that the church doesn't have a First Amendment right to a government contract, but it does have a First Amendment right not to be excluded from a contract based on its religious beliefs." Support for Religious Liberty has recently been passed by legislatures in Oklahoma and Kansas. These states now join Alabama, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia and Michigan who already have laws in place that grant legal protections to faith-based adoption agencies that cite their religious beliefs for not placing children in same-sex homes. Supporters of these laws argue that the core issue is protecting a groups right to live out its religious faith. "This is a matter of activist groups who don't like certain religious beliefs and they want to use the power of the government to crush people that operate according to those religious beliefs." said the Kansas Catholic Conference director.
