I learned so much about Christianity from the pilgrimage to the Holy Land this March. However, what inspired me most about the trip was the Christianity on display amongst the group itself. We did an awful lot of walking and at times the streets and paths were very rough, steep or slippery. It was common place to see members of the group grabbing each other’s arm or the hand of someone to protect them from falling.
This was especially noticeable as we walked the streets of Jerusalem tracing the footsteps of Jesus on his way to Mount Calvary. As we walked station from station I found it quite striking when occasionally someone actually
tripped and fell. The concern and tender compassion of the group for one another helped me draw the connection between the way of the cross of Jesus 2000 years ago and our walk of discipleship today.
Jesus made a deliberate choice to undergo his passion and death for us, knowing that His way of the cross would lead to ours. Every time we have passion for the suffering humanity of others and respond with tender compassion and love, we validate the sacrifice that Jesus made for us. Especially during the Easter season may we make sure that we honor and give thanks for the sacrifice that Jesus made for us by our willingness to make sacrifices for one another each and every day.
Sincerely
Father Kurt Farrell
Facilities Update: With hopes that spring is around the corner, the season of renewal will see a few Parish projects begin. Tuck-pointing on the exterior brick work of the Parish is part of an ongoing maintenance and care plan needed routinely to extend the life of the buildings. Also, several heating and cooling units for the Church have reached the end of their service life and will be replaced before we all get a chance to be overheated this summer. Both projects are part of the Parish Building & Grounds and the Finance Committee’s commitment to maintain and improve our Parish facilities. The projects are partially funded by a combination of generous donations, remaining Rooted in Faith designated funds and monies exceeding the 2018 Catholic Ministry Appeal goal. The Parish still needs your support to replenish funds and reserves being used for these valuable projects. Any increase in weekly giving, gifts or other support are always appreciated.
We had a great year! A big thank you once again to all our Catechists who dedicated their
time to teaching our youth about our Catholic Faith.

2019 Catholic Ministries Appeal Each year as a parish we are asked to reach our annual Catholic Ministries Appeal Goal. Last year we did a
phenomenal job of not only meeting our goal but exceeding it! This is due to the generosity of so many that take
to heart the call of being good stewards of the Lord’s gifts and blessings. Below are “Mini Stories” of how your
generosity helps others.
Mini Story: Jane Petrie - St. Joseph the Worker, Mankato: I used to be really involved with my parish, but recently I have not been able to be as involved, and getting to Mass each week is hard. The TV Mass, supported by the Catholic Ministries Appeal, allows me to connect with both my parish and the greater Catholic Church. Seeing the parishes through-out the dioceses and hearing from a number of priests, many of whom I recognize as my former pastors, is very nice. If I am up early enough, I watch it twice on the two stations where it is broadcast. Thank you to all who support the CMA for helping me to keep watching Mass..
Mini Story: Aaron & Shanna Filzen - St. Thomas More Newman Center, Mankato: At the
Newman Center, students have a chance to learn about their faith and the depth of love of the Father. With opportunities like Bible studies, mission trips, pilgrimages, and retreats, the Newman Center helps people walk with Christ in a new way. The Newman Center is not making men and women who just go to Mass on Sundays, but men and women who are dedicated to their faith and on fire to share that with the rest of the world. By investing in the Newman Center through the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you invest not only in a building, but in students who are the next generation of Catholics and you are equipping them to be leaders in parishes, in families, and in the community.
Mini Story: Maggie Holm-Wachholz - Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Rochester: One of the requirements to get married in our parish is to go on a marriage preparation retreat put on by the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. I had high expectations for the retreat, and it still blew me away - we loved it. We heard from a number of speakers covering a variety of topics and situations to prepare for in marriage. This program has helped me become grounded in what type of wife and mother I want to be. By supporting the office of Life, Marriage & Family through the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we build stronger parishes and communities, with strong couples who raise spiritually stronger children.
Mini Story: Eric Klein - Men's Conference Participant: The moment I most look forward to when I attend the Men's Conference is during Mass when all the men are standing saying the Our Father together as one. There is something truly unique and special about spending a day in prayer with other men, even if only to reassure me that I am not the only one trying to live a life of faith. Good things in life are worth investing in. Diocesan events such as this are worth that investment because they affect more than just the men in one specific parish. After connecting with and encouraging men from across the diocese, these men go back to their home parishes and share all that they have received, and they would not have had that experience if each parish only held their own conference.
Mini Story: Randy Horlocker - Pax Christi Parish, Rochester: The heart of a deacon is to serve, and the Permanent Diaconate program provides candidates the opportunity to serve at the altar, in our parishes, and in our communities. As candidates, we deepen our knowledge of theology and philosophy through lectures and theology courses funded by the diocese. We share that knowledge with our parishes as we work toward becoming permanent deacons. We are all very grateful for everyone who supports the Catholic Ministries Appeal to fund and encourage us in our studies.
Thank You For Supporting The Catholic Ministries Appeal!

Day of Fasting and Prayer for the
Evangelization of the Diocese The Office of Missionary Discipleship encourages all so moved to join us in a monthly day of prayer and evangelization for the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. We will engage in a novena of prayer and fasting the following days of each month: March 15, April 12, May 17, June 21, July 19, August 16, September 20, October 18, and November 15, 2019. We are praying for: --friends and family who do not know the fullness of God’s love and care for them --people who have drifted away from the Church, and are inactive, that they may be led to re-encounter Christ in his Church --people in southern Minnesota who have never heard of God’s personal plan for their lives --people in southern Minnesota who have rejected God, for their return --people in our communities who are struggling to embrace what it means to be an adopted son or daughter of Christ in his Church --people to recognize their vocations and live them out gratefully and fully --the initiatives of different parishes and communities in this diocese designed to reach the spiritually lost: Alpha, ChristLife, discipleship quads, FOCUS, Renew, Saint Paul Street Evangelization teams, St. James’ Coffee, Cursillo, TEC, Retrouvaille, Unbound prayer teams, Catholic in Recovery, and others --that we as the people of God will be an authentic and humble witness to the joy of the Gospel, confident not in our own abilities but in God’s support --that all of us will take the responsibility to seek ways to deepen our individual relationships with Jesus Christ --that as baptized disciples, we continue to recognize that we are called to propose the Gospel and help make new disciples --that we are called to the Great Commission in our local communities People are encouraged to pray and fast as they can for these intentions on their own and St. Theodore has adoration each of the above mentioned dates for people to come and spend some time with Jesus in prayer. Each month, a parish will host a Mass or Holy hour for the evangelization of the diocese. All are welcome! For more information, please contact Dr. Susan Windley-Daoust at [email protected] .
