FIRST READING Exodus 162-15 A Reading from the Book of Exodus The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness The Israelites said to them If only we had died by Godrsquos hand in the land of Egypt when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger Then God said to Moses I am going to rain bread from heaven for you and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day In this way I will test them whether they will follow my instruction or not On the sixth day when they prepare what they bring in it will be twice as much as they gather on other days So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites In the evening you shall know that it was God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and in the morning you shall see Godrsquos glory because your complaining has been heard by God For what are we that you complain against us And Moses said When God gives you meat to eat in the evening and your fill of bread in the morning because your complaining has been heard by Godmdashwhat are we Your complaining is not against us but against God Then Moses said to Aaron Say to the whole congregation of the Israelites Draw near to God for your complaining has been heard by God And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the Israelites they looked toward the wilderness and Godrsquos glory appeared in the cloud God spoke to Moses and said I have heard the complaining of the Israelites Say to them At twilight you shall eat meat and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread then you shall know that I am the Almighty your God In the evening quails came up and covered the camp and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp When the layer of dew lifted there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance as

FIRST READING Jonah 310-411 A Reading from the Book of Jonah

When God saw what the people of Nineveh did how they turned from their evil ways Godrsquos mind was changed about the calamity that was to befall them so God did not do it

But this was very displeasing to Jonah and he became angry He prayed to God and said lsquoO God Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and ready to relent from punishing And now O God please take my life from me for it is better for me to die than to liversquo And God said lsquoIs it right for you to be angryrsquo Then Jonah left Nineveh and sat down east of the city where he made a shelter for himself There he sat in the shade waiting to see what would become of the city

Then God appointed a bush and made it come up over Jonah to give shade over his head to save him from his discomfort so Jonah was very happy about the bush But when dawn came up the next day God appointed a worm that attacked the bush so that it withered When the sun rose God prepared a sultry east wind and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint and asked that he might die He said lsquoIt is better for me to die than to liversquo

But God said to Jonah lsquoIs it right for you to be angry about the bushrsquo And he said lsquoYes angry enough to diersquo Then God said lsquoYou are concerned about the bush for which you did not labour and which you did not grow it came into being in a night and perished in a night So should I not be concerned about Nineveh that great city in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who do not know their right hand from their left and also many animalsrsquo

Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches Thanks be to God

PSALM 1451-8 I will extol you my God and Sovereign and bless your name for ever and ever Every day I will bless you and praise your name for ever and ever Great is our God and greatly to be praised Godrsquos greatness is unfathomable One generation shall praise your works to another and declare your mighty acts Upon the glorious splendour of your majesty and upon your wondrous works I will meditate The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed and I will declare your greatness They shall celebrate your renown for your abundant goodness and they shall sing aloud of your righteousness Our God is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love

PROPER 25 YEAR A

SECOND READING Philippians 121-30 A Reading from the Letter to the Philippians For to me living is Christ and dying is gain If I am to live in the flesh that means fruitful labour for me so I do not know which I prefer living or dying I am hard pressed between the two my desire is to depart and be with Christ for that is far better but to remain in the flesh is more helpful for you Since I am convinced of this I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again Only live your life in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ so that whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit striving side by side with one mind for the truth of the gospel and that you are in no way intimidated by your opponents For this is evidence of their destructionmdashbut also of your salvation And this is Gods doing For God has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ but of suffering for him as wellmdashsince you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and as you now hear that I still have Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches Thanks be to God

GOSPEL READING Matthew 201-16 The Lord be with you And with thy spirit The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory be to Thee O Lord

God be with you And also with you The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Matthew Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus said The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage he sent them into his vineyard

When he went out about nine oclock he saw others standing idle in the marketplace and he said to them You also go into the vineyard and I will pay you whatever is right So they went When he went out again about noon and about three oclock he did the same And about five oclock he went out and found others standing around and he said to them Why are you standing here idle all day They said to him Because no one has hired us He said to them You also go into the vineyard When evening came the owner of the vineyard said to his manager Call the labourers and give them their pay beginning with the last and then going to the first When those hired about five oclock came each of them received the usual daily wage Now when the first came they thought they would receive more but each of them also received the usual daily wage And when they received it they grumbled against the landowner saying These last worked only one hour and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat

PROPER 25 YEAR A

But he replied to one of them Friend I am doing you no wrong did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage Take what belongs to you and go I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me Or are you envious because I am generous

So it is that the last will be first and the first will be last The Gospel of Christ Praise be to Thee O Christ

The Gospel of Christ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

Eucharistic Prayer God be with you

And also with you Lift up your hearts We lift them to our God Let us give thanks to the God of our salvation It is right to give our thanks and praise It is indeed right that we should praise you gracious God for you created all things you formed us in your own image When we turned away from you you did not cease to care for us but opened a path of salvation for all people You made a covenant with Israel and through your servants Abraham and Sarah gave the promise of a blessing to all nations Through Moses you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the promised land through the prophets you renewed your promise of salvation Accept our praises O God in our own time as we follow the example of your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ and obey his command who in the same night that he was betrayed took bread and gave you thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying Take eat this is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me

We recount how God has been with us through the ages We proclaim Godrsquos presence with us now as we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus as living signs of Godrsquos abiding love

Through our prayers we are united with those who have gone before us who even now continue to praise God in heaven as we praise God here on earth The ldquoLordrsquos Prayerrdquo is so called because the Gospels record Jesus teaching this prayer to his disciples

This Week at St Stephenrsquos Here is a brief round-up of news for the week Diocesan Council (comprising clergy and lay people from across the Diocese) met last week to hear a report that from the resource person who facilitated the Generous Listening process Her conclusion the diocese is ready to consider adopting a practice called ldquolocal optionrdquo that is allowing each parish to decide for itself whether or not to offer same-sex blessings Apparently there was some strong support for this direction but the bishop once again has said No So itrsquos on to the meeting of Synod on October 14 where a motion will be presented to the same effect

The refurbishing of our Memorial Garden has finally been given the go-ahead from the Rector and Wardens Consideration had been given to a fulsome plan that included redeveloping the entire northeast corner of our property to include a labyrinth Initial estimates of the project were in line with our cash in hand plus the possibility of a grant from the Anglican Foundation But the final estimate came in at over three times the original amount so all extraneous plans are being shelved Work on the Garden itself will begin shortly A small group of ldquoInquirersrdquo are preparing to meet in October some to pursue Baptism or Reception others simply to explore their questions about the Christian faith the Church and their own spiritual beliefs and practices Speak to the rector if you would like to be included

PROPER 25 YEAR A

The Gospel of Christ Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ

ldquoEucharistrdquo is the Greek word for thanksgiving

We believe in God the Son who lives in our hearts through faith filling us with his love We believe in God the Holy Spirit who strengthens us with power from on high We believe in one God Father Son and Holy Spirit Amen Prayers of the People led by Dariel Bateman The Peace (the congregation standing) Jesus said to his disciples ldquoPeace I leave with you my peace I give to yourdquo The Peace of Christ be always with you And also with you

The People greet one another with a gesture of peace

The Prayers of the People place the concerns of our hearts before God for the world for the Church and for those in need The Passing of the Peace reminds us of Jesusrsquo command to love one another as he has loved us

6

In the same way after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying Drink this all of you this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins Do this whenever you drink it in remembrance of me Accept through him our great high priest this our offering of thanks and praise Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts that all who eat and drink at this table may be one body and one holy people a living witness to Jesus Christ our Lord So now we join our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven who proclaim the glory of your name forever praising you and singing Holy holy holy Lord God of power and might heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest

The Lordrsquos Prayer

As our Saviour taught us let us pray Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on earth as in heaven

Through our prayers we are united with those who have gone before us who even now continue to praise God in heaven as we praise God here on earth The ldquoLordrsquos Prayerrdquo is so called because the Gospels record Jesus teaching this prayer to his disciples

7

Give us today our daily bread Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil For the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and for ever Amen
