Hilary Bogert-Winkler — I’ve been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack recently. Hamilton is a rap musical about the life of Alexander Hamilton. In the show, King George III makes a few appearances. While I haven’t seen the musical, I’ve seen pictures of Jonathan Groff as George. His songs, costum- ing, and posture portray him as ridiculous—a per- son not to be taken serious- ly, and the kind of king the colonies would absolutely want to break away from. As much as Americans might be interested in the British royal family today, most of us would balk at the suggestion that we sub- mit ourselves again to a monarchy, con- stitutional or not. This is what makes Christ the King such a tricky Sunday for American churches. In Jeremiah, the prophet says, “The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely” (26:5). These were particularly hopeful words for Israel, as they had experienced their share of un- just and unwise kings. Even David and Solomon had some serious ϐlaws. David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed, while Solomon erected altars to other deities. Jeremiah was prophesying at a time when things had gotten to their lowest—Israel was being sent into exile. It seemed that king- ship and Israel had failed, much as Sam- uel had predicted in 1 Samuel 8. Fast for- ward to American colonial history, and we can see the shortcomings of monar- chy as well. Charles I had his head cut off. Charles II was a libertine who spent his time partying. George III suffered from mental illness bad enough that his son eventually had to rule as prince re- gent. Not great models of kingship. Yet we are asked to think of Christ as our King. What are we to do with this Sunday, particu- larly as it marks the end of Ordinary Time and the be- ginning of Advent? Christ the King gives us the chance to think about who the true Ruler of our lives is. We run into trouble when we equate Jesus with a human king. Jesus is so much more than that—all of the imperfections that have made monarchy so problematic throughout history don’t exist in Him. Under the reign of Christ, we can be led by someone who loves us beyond our wildest imagination and work to estab- lish God’s Kingdom on earth. But in or- der to live fully into that reality, we have to put Jesus at the head of our lives. This is why I think it works so well that Christ the King happens just before Advent. Much like Lent, Advent is a season in the church year in which we are asked not only to prepare to re- member the birth of Christ, but more importantly, to ask if we are prepared for Christ’s return. Where in our lives have we turned away from God? How can we be better prepared for our King’s return? These are important questions that each one of us should be asking during this season, for the King whose return we await is not like the caricatures we see in popular culture, but is the ultimate King who we pray will “free us and bring us together un- der his most gracious rule” (BCP 236). Vestry Highlights

PARISH INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Several years ago the Vestry adopted inclement weather protocol for an-nouncing the cancella on of parish events and services. In the event of inclement weather or the forecast of impending severe weather, the Rec-tor, in consulta on with the War-dens, may cancel or delay services or events. Cancella ons or delays will be announced through Boston’s Channel 5 (WCVB-TV) and Worcester-based radio sta on WSRS 96.1. When possible, we will update the parish website and answering ma-chine gree ng and will send out a parish-wide email, but that is not al-ways possible to do in a mely man-ner, so be sure to check with the ra-dio and TV sta ons for the official word.
