Campus Ministry Position The Diocese of San Angelo is seeking a full-time Campus Minister to serve three college campuses: University of Texas at Permian Basin (Odessa, TX), Odessa College, and Midland College (Midland, TX). Midland and
Odessa are 20 minutes apart. This position requires a practicing Catholic with a B.A. in Pastoral Studies or Theology (Masters preferred), experience in ministry, pastoral and administrative skills. The Director of Campus Ministry is responsible for the pastoral leadership of the campus faith community in an academic setting. This includes liturgy, music, faith formation, RCIA and sacramental preparation where appropriate, social ministry and fellowship, pastoral care to students, faculty, and administrative responsibilities. St. Stephen’s will be holding training sessions for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion (EMs) on Tuesday, July 9 & Wednesday, 17, at 6:30PM in the main Church. Are you a fully initiated Catholic (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) in good standing, and a registered member of the Parish? Do you have a deep love for the Eucharist?
If you answered “Yes” to all of these questions, please consider joining this important and very special ministry!

Hoy el Evangelio nos habla del envío de 72 discípulos. No pertenecen al grupo de los doce, que continuamente le acompañan, han dejado sus familias y, digamos, hacen vida con él Se trata de otros muchos que le escuchan con frecuencia siempre que el Señor viene por los lugares donde viven con la familia, aceptan sus enseñanzas y, de acuerdo con ellas, procuran ir cambiando sus vidas. El texto habla de “otros 72 discípulos” y no parece que incluya a ninguno de los doce. San Lucas evita siempre relatar hechos parecidos. Si lo hace por separado con estas dos misiones, es porque cree que el hecho de que sean dos envíos diferentes tiene en este caso una especial significación. Los doce representan indudablemente a los obispos, que son los sucesores de los apóstoles. Se pueden incluir a sacerdotes, religiosos/as que lo han dejado todo para seguirle. Esta fue la misma experiencia de Lucas y otros, acompañando a Pablo: Pablo y Bernabé, Bernabé y Marcos, Pablo y Sila, Timoteo y Sila. Y van por parejas porque es la Iglesia la que ha recibido el mandato de evangelizar y no evangeliza el apóstol aislado sino en nombre de toda la Iglesia. Todos los discípulos de Cristo estamos obligados a evangelizar. Lo hacemos con los aportes de nuestra oración, nuestros sacrificios, nuestra limosna, nuestro ejemplo, nuestra palabra. Jesús les decía cuando los envió: “La mies es abundante y los obreros pocos. Rueguen, pues, al dueño de la mies que envíe obreros. Y ustedes mismos pónganse en camino”. Como oyen, la oración por las vocaciones apostólicas, sacerdotes, religiosos/as y laicos que se dediquen al apostolado en la catequesis y otras actividades pastorales de la Iglesia, es pedida expresamente por Cristo. Acordémonos de ello, de orar por las vocaciones. De hecho, aquellos 72 volvieron todos llenos de entusiasmo. ¡” Hasta los demonios se les sometían cuando les interpelaban en el nombre de Jesús!”. Desde lejos Jesús lo veía, se alegraba e inscribía en el cielo los nombres de aquellos apóstoles, lo que es mucho más importante, como le dice a su vuelta. Recordemos al apóstol Santiago: “Si alguno de ustedes, hermanos míos, se desvía de la verdad y otro le convierte, sepa que el que convierte a un pecador de su camino desviado, salvará su alma de la muerte y cubrirá multitud de pecados”. La Virgen María, Madre de la Iglesia, nos ayudará como lo hizo en Pentecostés con los primeros creyentes.

We sometimes hear that people hesitate to give to agencies that serve the poor because they feel the money is used to help “deadbeats” – those out for a “free ride” on “the system.” We have even heard comments that there is no poverty in Midland. “With all the jobs waiting to be filled, a person has no reason to be in need in Midland.” We do our best to explain that each of the 40-50 calls we receive each day are carefully monitored. Clients are asked to leave their name, social security number, phone number, the type of help they need and why they need it. We then look up any history they might have of previous assistance through Charity Tracker (a secured website that allows the agencies that use it to share information on clients). Charity Tracker (along with interviews and home visits) has been invaluable in helping us to “weed out” the habitual abuser and allow us to reach those people with genuine need. Our clients are often people who have been hit by the huge increases in rent – increases many times of over $500/month over the past year, and while those increases hurt everyone affected, they are especially hurtful to young families or elderly people on Social Security whose incomes have not gone up in proportion to those devastating increases. They are the elderly who have lost virtually everything due to illness. They are in their 70’s and 80’s and simply too old, too ill or too frail to return to work. Our clients are young mothers with children who are fleeing their homes in Midland to relocate elsewhere to escape abusive partners. These are in many cases life-threatening situations, as our fellow caseworkers at Safe Place will attest to. No, we do not help deadbeats. We help those with genuine needs, and there are many of them out there. We dearly wish that we could reach every single person who comes to us with a legitimate need, and we will continue to reach as many families each week as our finances will allow. We consider the support that you give to Helping Hands to be no less than a sacred trust, and we thank you for continuing to reach out to the poor through our organization!
