We are blessed in Midland to again be experiencing a boom in the oil industry which makes jobs plentiful. People are coming in from around the country to take advantage of those jobs. Life is good here in Midland right now. But as is said, “for every bonus there’s an onus.” These good conditions are again creating a housing shortage. As we have seen here time and again, along with housing shortages comes increases in rent. Two bedroom apartments in Midland are now up to $1,500 per month (on average). The restaurant worker, the carpet cleaner, the day laborer, the clerical worker, the custodian (etc.) have not seen their wages go up along with the price of oil. But they have seen their rent and overall cost of living increase astronomically. Compound $1,500 per month rent (if you are a small family) with the cost of a tank of gasoline, daycare and rising costs of food, and we wonder how any young family or single person who is not out in the oilfield can afford to live in Midland. Our helpline rings “off the wall” with people desperate to maintain their lives in the city that has been the only home they have ever known, but which is becoming unaffordable for them. Please pray that we find solutions to these troubling situations that affect the lower middle-class and the poor during our times of prosperity.
