"I am the King's good servant, but God's first." So said St. Thomas More, whose feast we celebrate on June 22nd. St. Thomas More was once Sir Thomas More, a lawyer and statesman in the court of King Henry VIII. When the king wished to dissolve his marriage to Catherine of Aragon -- who was infertile -- the pope held up the validity of the marriage. Desperate to generate an heir, King Henry declared himself the head of the Church of England and granted himself an annulment. Most leaders signed the "Oath of Supremacy," declaring the King's power over the English Church. Thomas More, then the Lord Chancellor, refused to sign. He was

sentenced to death. St. Thomas More reminds us of our call to integrity and to the defense of truth in the public square. Thomas More is the patron saint of lawyers, politicians, and civil servants. St. Thomas More, pray for us!

From your Pastor:

Happy Father’s Day! As we celebrate and

commemorate our fathers both living and

deceased, hopefully our gratitude is the

motivator of our joy today. Of all the wonderful

gifts that God has bestowed on us, our fathers

and mothers share pride of place when we speak

of the gifts we have received.

The reason why God’s Commandment to honor

our fathers and mothers is ‘ranked’ so highly

among the Ten He gave us should be obvious

because of their importance in our lives and

development. The Fourth Commandment does

not expire when we turn 18 or 21; nor does it

become void when we marry or move on in life. It

still applies even when they have passed away.

The love, guidance and rules they taught and

reinforced are intended by God to help us

wherever we are in life.

Parents are the tangible, human instruments of

God’s Providence and purveyors of His Will in

terms of the faithful obedience we are required to

learn and act upon for the sake of our success,

happiness and ultimate goal of heaven. While no

parent or family is perfect, our respect and

obedience to them is one of the ways we fulfill

God’s Will. It is part of the order of nature and

integral to the Kingdom of God. This is why the

holiness of parents is so important as well.

Have a wonderful celebration today as we honor

our Fathers. There is good golf on TV, the lawn

mowers are parked for the day and there will be

good stuff to eat. At the same time, remember to

pray to our Father in Heaven for them as well.

Fr. Fitzpatrick

LIVE THE LITURGY

Inspiration for the week…

Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the

tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows

into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of

our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use

one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change

another person's life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our

willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone's

story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for

someone who is right, or complimenting someone on

something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents.

Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and

generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

A father is a man who loves without cost to his children and tries to raise them to be fully human creatures with the abilities to make a difference in our world. Some fathers are successful, some are not. However, almost all try their best. This Father's Day, let your dad know that you appreciate all his efforts. Strength--Your strength in helping me to tell right from wrong is a great gift. Honor--You teach me that to honor myself is a way to honor the God who made me. Faith--Thanks Dad for having faith in me, when I am not sure I have faith in myself. Love--You love me even when I do not love myself. For that I am grateful.
