Dear Families,

As we take a look back on Autumn, I am astounded by how busy we

have been and the myriad of things to celebrate. We have completed the

much awaited extension to Year 3 so that now the Junior classrooms are

all equally stunning as we aim for engaging environments that are

safe and stimulating for all the pupils. Our playground refurbishments

have included planting a wall of green around our perimeter so that the

pupils will in time be protected from the outside world by a green

screen like a castle. I know that nursery have been having fun with all the

changes to their outside area. We still have to fence the nature area

outside year 3 & 6 and this is planned now.

The fabric of the building has to be right but what is inside is what

really matters and our outstanding Inclusion Mark, Silver PE

Award, Philosophy for Children Award and successful Financial

Audit validated all the hard work by staff in leading and managing the

school for everyone. Knowing that we can externally assure the

quality of our actions towards building an outstanding school is

wonderful for leaders at all levels. Staff at all levels; lead school and I I

I know you would want to congratulate them for all their hard work,

which is at such a consistently high standard. I am always struck by

their commitment; teaching is a vocation, not a job and we love it.

Our 151st birthday was less of a grand affair but we hope you enjoyed the

history booklet that all pupils received and of course we all had

cake! The icon of St Saviour is something the pupils found

fascinating and their art work on Christ in Art hangs in the hall. Rev

Jane Hodges led a marvelous service and blessing.

The biggest change this year has been the curriculum. Children are having fun and it has taken

learning to a whole new inspirational level. Parents loved having a banquet or a heart dissection

or a tea party might be a lot more thrilling and memorable. Parents found that this was the first

time they had an opportunity to talk and share beyond the morning or after school rush and I

have to say as an observer people’s Mummies and Daddies and Carers at these events, the look

of happiness, awe and wonder on pupil and parental faces as the children were in charge of

presenting very exciting things indeed was wonderful to behold. Thank you for coming along

on this creative journey with us. We have more exciting things planned for next year. Wishing

you all very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year,

2016 Outcomes for pupils are now available

in the performance tables. We are pleased

that from the Early Years to Year 6 learning

has excelled to the point where we continue

to be at or above national in many measures.

The key aspect is that the progress the pupils

make from their starting points is within the

top 5% to 25% of schools nationally. As

much as we are pleased with the progress

pupils make with us, we know learning

doesn’t just a happen at school, on a recent

report it was found that the foundations are

laid by the time pupils enter nursery!

Talking, reading and developing language

from an early age is crucial. Parents have

enjoyed the courses run this term and found

them valuable and next term we have more

running to support you in helping your child.

If you feel like all the singing and

celebration just isn’t enough and you

wish to feel the magic of Christmas

in the parish, please see the services:

The children’s Christmas

performances were amazing this

year all the way through from

Nursery to year 6 their efforts in

writing and learning lines, songs

and acting all paid off with

astounding success.

Thank you to all the parents who

complied with our two tickets and

theatre rules, not taking any

pictures or videos, it really helps

when performing not to have a

flash on your face, not to mention

safeguarding vulnerable pupils!

Thank you for your complements

to the staff and pupils. We have

had a lot of “the best performance

ever” “thank you for the two

tickets it was the first time I could

see and hear all the performance

clearly.” Catch the edited

performances on the website.

HO! HO!

Year 5 have had a great Autumn term!

We have had two topics; Plague, Peasants and

Pestilence followed by Stargazers. Our

highlights of the term have been hosting a

medieval banquet for our family and friends and

reinacting a Come Dine with Me (Medieval

style)! During our second topic we were also

luckily enough to visit

the Science Museum

where we took a

virtual trip to the

moon on our

spaceship, Apollo 11.

Followed by exploring

the Wonderlab and

getting to take part in

all different types of

experiments.

We have enjoyed ending the term with lots of

Christmas celebrations including our trip to

Corum Fields to the National Variety Christmas

party, where we got to watch the pantomime

‘Christmas in the Jungle’ and practise our circus

tricks. Followed by our School Pantomime of

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs! We look

forward to next term with our new topics;

Alchemy Island and Scream Machine!

By Dominic, Sonny and Anjali

Year 4 highlights have included

Facetiming Matt Terry (winner of X

Factor 2016), going on cool trips and

having Mr French again. It has been a

very exciting year, and we’ve only just

started!

This term we’ve been looking at the

Battle of Hastings and we’ve read a

book called ‘I was there’ based on the

battle itself. We went to the Imperial

War Museum and we wrote our own

diary entry as if we were in the trenches

of war.

In maths we’ve looked at inverse

operations and played a game called

‘Beep Bop’ to help us learn our times

tables up to 12x12.

In RE we’ve looked at symbols and

created a symbol which represents us.

In P4C (philosophy) we’ve looked at

the question, Does praying always solve

problems? and Is fame a blessing or a

curse? Most of all, we’ve had fun and

we’ve enjoyed Mr French and Mrs John

always having a smile on their faces!

By Olivia S and Lemonie

We have had a wonderful first term in Nursery Class. From getting used to routines and

becoming comfortable in the environment, to taking part in learning around our families,

ourselves and our local communities to going on our very own Bear Hunt! It has been a

hugely successful first term with lots of progress made, children settling in well and

adapting to the new learning environment. We hope for an excellent year together in

2017!

Thank you

especially to all

the parents who

shared a

Christmas lunch

with us, it was a

wonderful event.

In Year 2, our first term our topic was Land

Ahoy! In English we learnt about pirates, we

went on our very own treasure hunt to find

ingredients to make cakes and biscuits. We also

wrote instructions about how to find pirate

treasure. In Maths we covered place value,

addition and subtraction. We also made our own

maths books. In Art and DT we made pirate

flags, treasure chests, cutlasses, telescopes and

boats. In History we learnt about famous pirates,

such as Captain James Cook and Blackbeard and

wrote our own information books about the life

of Captain Cook. The highlight of out term was

our trip to the RNLI Lifeboat Station. In Science

we studied materials and their everyday uses.

“Land Ahoy was really fun; we enjoyed learning

about pirates and making things.” Maddison

“I really liked it when we made flags.” Ibrahim

For the second part of term our topic was Muck,

Mess and Mixtures. To kick start our topic we

had a fantastic messy mixture morning, where

we explored a variety of weird and wonderful

mixtures with our hands! In English we had lots

of fun following and writing our own recipes to

make scrumptious, sherbet slurpers, dirt cakes,

editable eyes and chocolate spider cookies. We

also wrote our own riddles. It tied in with our

science work on materials. In maths we studied

measurement: length and capacity, graphs,

multiplication and division. In topic we studied

historic nurses and learnt about how Florence

Nightingale, Edith Cavell and Mary Seacole

changed the face of nursing.

“We liked our messy morning, especially when we

put our hands into the mixture.” Sonnie

“I liked when we were learning about George’s

Marvellous Medicine and when we got to make our

own marvellous medicines.” Tyler

This term Reception have really enjoyed exploring our Cornerstones Topic’s, ‘Do you

want to be friends?’, ‘Where do squirrels hide their nuts?’ and ‘What happens when

I fall asleep at night?’ The children have enjoyed all aspects of these topics, exploring

friendship, Autumn, Winter and the seasons changing and exploring key stories such

as ‘The Lion and the Mouse’, ‘The Rainbow Fish’, ‘The Way Back Home’ and ‘Owl

Babies’. “My favourite was Owl Babies, when Sarah has the big branch, Percy the

middle and Bill the small one!”- Stanley “My favourite was Santa coming and the

party”- Faye.

Before we realised it, the Christmas break has suddenly arrived. It has

been a very busy and long term. The children have studied the structure of

the Earth and the effects of volcanoes and earthquakes. We have read the

Firework Makers Daughter and a cornucopia of Greek myths. Next term

our books will be The Sheep-Pig and Stig of the Dump.

The children have written their own myths, they also wrote the play script

for the Year 3 section of the KS2 panto. Here is what the children said….

Janelle and Bailey: “We’ve had so much fun, but there is more learning to be

done! In topic we learnt all about Ancient Greece”

Ananya and Raegan: “Greek gods excite us all! Amazing topics on the wall.

There’s a bit of excitement in English too! Diary writing, instructions,

stories. Maths is brilliant, lots of place value everywhere. What to do when

you’re in despair!” DJ: “I loved drawing the dragon. Can we draw more

dragons?”

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy

New Year. See you in 2017!

The Year 3 team.

We have ended this term with a Christmas treat

watching the pantomime of Cinderella and

celebrating the children’s performance in their

Christmas Nativity.

In the first half of the term in Year 6 our

topic was Bloodheart. We cut open a

lambs heart and lambs lungs. Some of us

thought it was disgusting, but it was

interesting as well! We all thought we

learned a lot, we wrote non-

chronological reports and some poems

based on the poems of John Donne.

After the half-term holiday our topic was

Hola Mexico, we learned about the Day

of the Dead. This is when Mexican

people celebrate all their relations who

have died. Our reading book Holes, is a

very good book.

Our first term in Year 1 has seen us all rising

to the challenges of meeting our learning

goals of working at expected and greater

depth levels.

Our learning has been about Bright Lights

Big City and Memory Boxes.

We can name lots of megastructures

including the Shard, the Gherkin, the

Cheesegrater and One Canada Square and

HSBC which we saw on our trip to the

Museum of Docklands.

After reading the story of the Queen’s hat

we wrote our own version about our hats

blowing over the school and Poplar.

As part of our Memory Box learning we all

made a memory box of personal items

including photos, toys and baby clothes,

which we enjoyed sharing with the whole

class; Mr Rowland also shared his childhood

memories too.

In English we have written stories about the

Three Little Pigs.

As we head towards Christmas we have

been learning about the Nativity story and

have made a story map to help with this

along with making Christmas cards and

Nativity pictures. We hope you all enjoyed

our great singing at the Nativity

performance.

All of us in Year 1 wish you all a very Merry

Christmas….Ho! Ho! Ho

Thank you for your contributions and

raffle ticket purchasing, we raised over

£200 that went towards providing some

of the Christmas treats for the

children.

From all the office and premises staff,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New

year everyone!

Mrs Clark, Mr Solly and the team.

Dear Parents, My name is Gissel Reddy and I will be St Saviour’s School’s Social Worker. When some parents hear the title Social Worker, they become uneasy and fearful of the role. I just wanted to let you know that the service that I provide to St Saviours is a preventative service, which helps to support families to prevent situations deteriorating to the point which may result in being referred into Children’s Social Care. This may include:

Behavioural Issues

Setting boundaries at home

Routines

Support advice around Domestic abuse/violence

Immigration processes and signposting

Access to lots of different services in the local area

Substance and Alcohol misuse

Building and developing relationship with your children/child.

Child Development and Puberty

Transition to nursery/Secondary My Role is to support and advise families who may need assistance and support. This does not mean that you are doing something wrong; neither does it mean that you are being judged on your parenting as some parents may think. It means that we all need a little help and support sometimes, when things may not be going well for us or our children. If you would like to make an appointment, I will be based at St Saviours School every Thursday afternoon. You can contact the school office if you would like to make an appointment. I look forward to meeting you Gissel Reddy St Saviours School Social Worker

Greate prizes were donated, bought

and won once gain in this year’s

raffle. Congratulations to Bleu for

winning the biggest hamper.

Thank you to all the

wonderful presents

and cards for all of you for staff. It is

really appreciated.
