Pastoral Message

Sharp-edged Sword

“The Lord called me from my birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name. He made of me a sharp-edged sword and concealed me in the shadow of his arm.” (Isaiah 49)

“John is his name.” (Luke 1) Today we celebrate the Nativity of John the Baptist, incidentally six months before we celebrate the Nativity of Jesus. John testifies to the Light and Truth, our Lord Jesus, who is the Lamb of God.

Starting Friday, the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, we observe Religious Freedom week. May we have the courage like John the Baptist and Peter and Paul to be that “sharp-edged sword” testifying to the Truth, especially when religious freedom is in peril.

Peace, Father Walter

Congratulations to our Raffle Winners!

Weekly Stewardship Thought

St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ died “so that those who live might live no longer for themselves.” What we give to and do for others, we

give to and do for Jesus!

St. Edward School has wonderful readers. When our 5th graders graduate they are either at grade level or a grade or two above grade level. This has been true for many years! One of the reasons our students do so well with reading is because of the use of guided reading within our classrooms. Not only do students get full class instruction, but they also receive read-ing instruction in small groups within their own reading level. Another main reason all of our students leave here reading at grade level or above is because of Ms. Ploederl and her expertise in tutoring. Ms. Ploederl is certified in the Susan Barton program and works with students who need a little extra help in reading each after-noon. We are blessed to have this program!
