FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners,
About a week ago, Catholic Charities arranged two events on our church grounds. Outdoors in our front area, two large medical vehicles offered Covid-19 anti-bodies testing, as well as EKG’s and sonograms. The vehicles wound up staying a couple of hours beyond the projected closing time--so popular were the services they offered.
Outdoors in our rear parking lot, Catholic Charities workers set up tents for an interactive health and wellness fair for small groups. Again, the numbers necessitated adding another session to the event. All those who participated were happily surprised when they received a $100 gift card at the end -- an in-kind gift from a particular, gen-erous donor.
Thanks to Catholic Charities, which has been so supportive of our Food Pantry during the pandemic, for this extra-thoughtfulness.
+ When our church re-opened for on-site services on July 4th, the hot weather was here and our air conditioning was needed. In just the month that followed, our church air-conditioning costs approached $3,000. This included the turn-on / servicing contract, a repair of one unit, and the cost of running the system on weekdays and weekends. This is a very costly utility, but one that keeps our church comfortable for summer worship.
Please lend a hand with the costs of our air conditioning. We ask each family to help with a $50 donation towards this cause. Please do so by Labor Day. Thanks for being sensitive to the financial challenge of this issue, especially given the pandemic.
+ We are still collecting emails for communication purposes. If you have not yet submitted yours to the rectory office, please do so at this time. We have just started emailing our weekly church bulletin to the addresses we already have. We plan to continue to do so as long as the pandemic protocols require there be no paper bulle-tins in church. -Father Jerry Jecewiz

POPE FRANCIS ON HEALING
Many people have been hurt by lack of affection and “bitter disappointments caused by those who should have given them love and instead orphaned their hearts,” Pope Francis said. “We would like to go back and change the past, but we cannot,” he said. “God, however, can heal these wounds by placing within our memory a greater love: his own love.” “The Lord knows that evil and sins do not define us; they are diseases, infections. And he comes to heal them with the Eucharist, which contains the antibodies to our negative memory. … We will al-ways remember our failures, troubles, problems at home and at work, our unrealized dreams. But their weight will not crush us because Jesus is present even more deeply, encouraging us with his love,” he said. God gave the world the gift of the Eucharist be-cause he knows how easily people can forget him in their weakness, the pope said.

THIS AUGUST WEEKEND IN OUR PARISH HISTORY
The July 22, 1881 issue of the Long Island City Star announced that “The lay-ing of the cornerstone of St. Raphael’s will be done by Bishop Loughlin on August 14th . On a length 130 feet by a width of 60 feet, contractor Carolan of Brooklyn has already built basement walls to a height of 14 feet. The seating capacity will be 800 and the wall height 27 feet. Tower height will be 160 feet and will be a land-mark.” (NOTE: from that day on, services began to be held in the basement.)
