Dear Parishioners,
This weekend we begin a very special time in our Parish
Life as we celebrate the Forty Hours Devotion. The practice of
the Forty Hours Devotion originated in Milan about the year
1530. It spread throughout Europe and came to America in the
16th and 17th centuries by way of the missionaries to the New
World. Saint John Neumann (1811-60), the fourth bishop of
Philadelphia, was a strong promoter of the Forty Hours Devotion.
He had a tremendous devotion to our Lord in the Blessed Sacra-
ment, and desired to foster such a spiritual life in his people. Un-
fortunately at this time a strong anti-Catholic sentiment plagued
Philadelphia. During the Know Nothing riots of 1844, two
churches were burned and another was saved simply by the threat
of gunfire. Some priests, therefore, advised Bishop Neumann that
the introduction of Forty Hours Devotion would only flame the
hatred against the Catholics and expose the Blessed Sacrament to
desecration. The Bishop was left in a quandary.
A strange incident occurred which helped Bishop Neu-
mann decide. One night, he was working very late at his desk and
fell asleep in his chair. The candle on the desk burnt down and
charred some of the papers, but they were still readable. He
awoke, surprised and thankful that a fire had not ignited. He fell
on his knees to give thanks to God for protection, and heard His
voice saying, “As the flames are burning here without consuming
or injuring the writing, so shall I pour out my grace in the Blessed Sacrament without prejudice to my honor. Fear no profanation,
therefore; hesitate no longer to carry out your design for my
glory.”
Bishop Neumann introduced the practice of Forty Hours
Devotion at the Fourth Diocesan Synod (April 20-21, 1853). The
first diocesan program of the Forty Hours Devotion in the United States was opened at the Church of Saint Philip Neri on the Festi-
val of Corpus Christi, May 26, 1853. Bishop Neumann spent
most of the three days in the Church praying. No trouble ensued.
He then introduced the program for the whole Diocese of Phila-
delphia, so that each parish would have Forty Hours Devotion
during the course of the year.
I pray that you can make some time to spend with the
Lord over these next few days; and if you do and are able may
they truly be a time of blessing for you!
God Love Ya!

• What belongs to the world and what belongs to God?
• For whom or what have I been chosen? Consider relationships, vo-cations, and ca-reers in the light of stewardship.
Lord, I am grateful for the
power of your love and
grace. Teach me to trust that
you care about my human
needs and obligations.
Picking teams or groups, a practice still used by
well-meaning teachers and coaches, probably strikes fear in
the hearts of many. Whether the game was kickball, dodge
ball, or Red Rover, choosing teams inevitably meant some-
one would have the unenviable position of last one chosen.
Often it was the child who didn’t excel at sports or who
ranked low on the popularity scale. It’s a universal truth—
no one wants to be chosen last.
The theme of being chosen is evident in today’s
first two readings, but there’s no need to feel dread about
this selection process. This isn’t a contest based on athleti-
cism or popularity—God is doing the choosing, and when
God chooses, each person is specially chosen for the team.
The prophet Isaiah claims, “I have called you by your
name, giving you a title.” Saint Paul reminds the Thes-
salonians how much God loves them and that they are,
therefore, chosen. God chose each of us to have a unique
and precious relationship with him. There was nothing ran-
dom about it.
But do we choose God? We might quickly say, “Of
course!” But think again. God speaks through Isaiah, “I am
the Lord, there is no other.” Jesus challenges us to give to
God what is his. Do we choose to actively engage in our
relationship with God, or does it fall to the wayside in lieu
of other priorities? Do we seek God in good times just to
deepen our relationship, or do we seek him only when
we’re in need? Do we truly give God the time and attention
he deserves? We’ve already made it onto God’s kickball
team—now it’s up to us to choose him in return.
