Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.

— 2 Corinthians 5:17

THE WIND AND THE SEA. Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the advice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” People who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memories of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake described in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. The sailor and the fisher all respect the water. Even more, they respect the awesome power of the Maker of wind and sea. —Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Collection: A Privilege

As the altar is prepared for the celebration of the Eucharist, the collection is taken up. In the early church, this part of the Mass must have been something to behold, as the people suddenly began to move, bringing forward to the deacons and priests freshly-baked bread and fine wine. Then, after the Eucharistic Prayer, that same community came forward again in the Communion procession, and they received back the very gifts they had given, now transformed into something infinitely more precious than bread and wine: the very Body and Blood of Christ. Beginning around the eleventh century, it became the custom for people to present money instead of bread and wine, and the procession of the faithful gradually disappeared (it survives in the liturgy of Holy Thursday). But the meaning is the same. We continue to bring the fruit of our labors and to offer them freely to God. And God continues to transform them into Christ. It is through our generous sharing of time, talent, and treasure that our parishes can preach the gospel, reach out to the sick and the imprisoned, and celebrate the sacraments. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright ©

—Miguel Arias, © J. False Church Representation

In light of the on-going issues from the Archdiocese, wherein persons are pretending to be priests, missionaries, and other representative of the Church, please be alerted that Fr. Art did not approve any one during this pandemic to come in our church or in our offices to speak on any subject matter.

We are changing our name, Religious Education to Family Faith Formation. Why? As Parents/Guardians you are your child’s primary teacher of faith, it is your responsibility to educate your child. We as catechists are here to assist you in forming your child in their faith. In addition to our name change we have merged elementary, JrHi and high school programs together. What does this mean for you? If you pay with check – you can pay with one check. Office hours will be the same for all. We are taking registrations for 2021-22 – please email, [email protected] and we will email you an instruction and registration sheet. You can also email this address if you are interested in volunteering. Please read this section every Sunday – there will be more information forthcoming in the weeks ahead. June 12, 2021 Memorial of The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The coronavirus pandemic has affected our world and society in ways we could never have imagined! Early on in the pandemic many people experience great fears and anxieties in the face of tremendous uncertainty. We recognized the fragility of our human nature. However, it also brought us closer together as one family seeking the good and wellbeing of the other. Most importantly, through this pandemic, we came to recognize our deep reliance on God and the truth of God’s abiding love for us, His sons and daughters. We remain strong in our faith knowing that God will always be by our side. Thankfully, we continue to make significant progress in our fight against the pandemic in the three counties of the Archdiocese. We can look forward to better days in which we can actively live our faith as the Body of Christ in our parish communities. And so, on June 19th and 20th, I encourage the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to return to in-person Sunday Mass and the celebration of the Sacraments, especially for those who are in good health. By this letter, effective June 19, 2021, the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation in response to the coronavirus pandemic will be lifted for the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Those who have serious and legitimate reasons (e.g., illness, underlying health conditions that renders them susceptible to illness, significant fears of becoming ill, etc.) are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass and Holy Days of Obligation. In these cases, Pastors are to encourage the faithful to keep the Lord’s Day holy by reading the Gospels, praying with their families, or joining themselves to the sacrifice of the Holy Mass by making an Act of Spiritual Communion. Lastly, Pastors are asked to refer to the Archdiocese’s “Guidelines on Liturgical Celebrations and Religious Services” to help their parishes transition into this new phase of our life, ministry and worship as a Church. Know that I am praying for you, and I ask you to please pray for me and my ministry. May Jesus, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Joseph, bless us with good health, peace and joy. Most Reverend José H. Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles

Church Announcement / Anuncio de la Iglesia

Please continue to pray for our Seminarian, Enrique Piceno, Jr. He will start 3rd year of Theology this school year at St. John’s Seminary.

Hello St. Pius X family. It has been many months since I have been present with all of you. I am still on my journey to the priesthood and have not left the seminary. In March 2020 all of the seminarians were quarantined at St. John’s Seminary which prevented all of us from leaving the property. Over the summer of 2020 with many of the churches closed and ministries coming to a halt I remained at the seminary working on my master’s thesis. As part of formation all seminarians will be assigned a year of internship in which they experience a year of living and working at a parish. In August 2020 I was assigned to serve my internship year at St. Dorothy Catholic Church in Glendora, CA. Coincidentally this is the same parish that Fr. Art attended when he was a seminarian. I have been working with the priests, participating in different ministries, and living in the rectory to experience what a life of a priest is. It has been a wonderful experience even in the midst of the pandemic and my vocation has been strengthened this past year. I conclude my internship at the end of this month and will return back to the seminary in July to start an “Intensive Program of Spiritual Formation” to further my training on diocesan spirituality. In the fall I start my 3rd year of theology at St. John’s Seminary and will complete two more years of formation. If all goes according to plan I will be ordained a transitional deacon in May 2022 and ordained to the priesthood in June 2023. I’m hoping that as restrictions are loosened I will be able to see all of you soon. Please continue to pray for me and for more vocations. You are all in my prayers. Cheerfully in Christ, Enrique Piceno Jr. Seminarian, Archdiocese of Los Angeles
