TODAY’S GOSPEL MEDITATION...by Don Schwager

The mission of Jesus and of the Holy Spirit are the same. That is why Jesus tells his disciples that the Spirit will reveal the glory of the Father and the Son and will speak what is true. Before his Passover, Jesus revealed the Holy Spirit as the "Paraclete" and Helper who will be with Jesus' disciples to teach and guide them "into all the truth" (John 14:17,26; 16:13). In baptism we are called to share in the life of the Holy Trinity here on earth in faith and after death in eternal light.

Clement of Alexandria, a third century church father, wrote:

"What an astonishing mystery! There is one Father of the universe, one Logos (Word) of the universe, and also one Holy Spirit, every-where one and the same; there is also one virgin become mother, and I should like to call her 'Church'."

How can we personally know the Father and his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ? It is the Holy Spirit who reveals the Father and the Son to us and who gives us the gift of faith to know and understand the truth of God's word. Through the Holy Spirit, we proclaim our ancient faith in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ until he comes again. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit as our divine Teacher and Helper that we may grow in the knowledge and wisdom of God. Do you seek the wisdom that comes from above and do you willingly obey God's word? Jesus' departure and ascension into heaven was both an end and a beginning for his disciples. While it was the end of Jesus' physical presence with his beloved disciples, it marked the beginning of Jesus' presence with them in a new way. Jesus promised that he would be with them al-ways to the end of time. He assured them of his power - a power which overcame sin and death. Now as the glorified and risen Lord and Savior, ascended to the right hand of the Father in heaven, Jesus promised to give them the power of his Holy Spirit, which we see fulfilled ten days later on the Feast of Pentecost (Luke 24:49 and Acts 2:1-4). When the Lord Jesus departed physically from the apostles, they were not left alone or powerless. Jesus assured them of his presence and the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus' last words to his apostles point to his saving mis-sion and to their mission to be witnesses of his saving death and his glorious resurrection and to proclaim the good news of salvation to all the world. Their task is to pro-claim the good news of salvation, not only to the people of Israel, but to all the nations. God's love and gift of salvation is not just for a few, or for a nation, but it is for the whole world - for all who will accept it. The gospel is the power of God, the power to forgive sins, to heal, to deliver from evil and oppression, and to restore life. Do you believe in the power of the gospel?

May the Lord Jesus put his hands on our eyes also, for then we too shall begin to look not at what is seen but at what is not seen. May he open the eyes that are concerned not with the present but with what is yet to come, may he unseal the heart's vision, that we may gaze on God in the Spirit, through the same Lord, Jesus Christ, whose glory and power will endure throughout the unending succession of ages.

(prayer of Origin, 185-254 AD)

The Battle of Iwo Jima resulted in more than 26,000 Ameri-can casualties, including 6,800 dead. Twenty seven U.S. Marine Corps and Navy personnel were awarded Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in America, for their heroics in the Battle of Iwo Jima. On 19 February 1985, an event was held to mark the 40th anniversary of the landing on Iwo Jima. Called “Reunion of Honor”, it was attended by veterans from both sides that fought the battle. A memorial to the Flag Raising was built on top of Mt. Suribachi. The famous Marine Corps War Memorial in Virginia is also based on the flag raising photograph.

Why is Memorial Day celebrated on May 30? Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) established Deco-ration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan de-clared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. This date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

Memorial Day Quotes

For love of country they accepted death8 James A. Garfield

The patriot’s blood is the seed of Freedom’s tree8 Thomas Campbell

These martyrs of patriotism gave their lives for an idea8 Schuyler Colfax

We come, not to mourn our dead soldiers, but to praise them8 Francis A. Walker

Memorial Day Trivia

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance of those who have

died serving our country.

Memorial Day was first called “Decoration Day” because of

the practice of decorating soldier’s graves with flowers.

New York was the 1st state to officially recognize Memorial

Day in 1873.

The south refused to honor the dead on Memorial Day until

after World War I when the meaning of Memorial Day

changed from honoring civil war dead to honoring

Americans who died fighting in any war.

Lordhold our troops, overseas and at home, in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

Are you or someone you know unable to get to Mass each week? If so, join others in our community and use your prayers at home asking God to intercede for the needs of all our people. Each month you will receive in the mail, a list of the Sunday readings and intentions. This is a ministry of prayer in our parish especially for the elderly, the shut-ins, the infirmed, and nursing home residents so that they can continue to grow in holiness. All that is asked is that you volunteer to pray and offer sacrifice for St. Philip the Apostle Parish and the Church as a whole. To register drop this form into the collection at Mass or mail to:

Good Sunday Morning! One form of prayer, the Daily Examen, is an important part of Ignatian Spirituality. In the Examen we prayerfully review our day so that we can grow in self-understanding. Being more self-aware frees us to follow God’s will for us. Praying the Daily Examen can help us become more aware of God’s action in our lives and his presence in the world around us. Where have you noticed God’s presence in your life today? What brought you closer to God? What led you away from God? Remember that God wants to have a close relationship with you. Ask him to help you live your life the way he wants you to. Thank God for his presence in your life! In Christ’s Peace, Sharon Pikul

NEWS

Please come to Mass early enough to not disrupt, Leave late enough not to insult, Worship reverently enough not to distract, And dress proudly enough not to offend.

Apparitions of the Blessed Mother

An apparition is an unusual and unexpected visible sighting.

Our Blessed Lady has never abandoned her children entrusted to her by her Son, Jesus. Through the centuries and around the world Our Blessed Mother, through apparitions, has brought requests for prayer, prayer for peace, recon-ciliation, the poor, catechizing the children and a return to faith. Mary also relayed the message of God’s mercy and love.

Apparitions are not taken lightly by the Church. The Church follows a stringent process for evaluating apparitions. The process involves local diocesan officials and the bishop, as well as officials from the Vatican Officials. Some of the well-known approved apparitions are from Lourdes, France; Fatima, Portugal, Guatalupa, Mexico; Knoch, Ireland; Kibeho, Rawanda; Akita, Japan.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church sets the standard by which the faithful should approach any claimed Apparition, private revelation or message associated with them:

“Throughout the ages, there have been so-called private revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history.” “Christian faith cannot accept “revelations” that claim to surpass or correct the Revelation of which Christ is the fulfillmentC” (CCC#65-67)

(The Church does not require the faithful to accept apparitions as part of the beliefs of the Catholic Faith. It is left to the individual to believe or not.)

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Information taken from www.catholic.org.
