5th Sunday of Easter greetings, Alleluia! We have four baptisms this weekend. There are more scheduled in the

near future. Parents help in continuing the work of creation when they participate in the bringing of children into the world. I frequently ask kids “Do you know when the world will end?” the quick answer is when parents stop having babies. God has tasked us with the responsibility of being fruitful and multiplying.

Alleluia! It is wonderful to celebrate First Holy Communion. The excitement is evident in the way the young people approach the altar. I love saying to them: When does the bread change into the Body of Christ? When does the wine change into the Blood of Christ? The best part is they know… Ask them and they can tell you… Congratulations to the students and parents: Keep coming back to the Altar and receiving Jesus… One student reminded me: Father, no more just getting a blessing — now I get Jesus!

That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. I've learned... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved. I've learned.... That the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

Attention Servants of Shelter Volunteers:

The SOS Steering Committee has decided to make time to express their thanks to the many people that donate their time in order to make this ministry a success. An Appreciation Dinner for volunteers from the member churches of SOS will be held on Monday, May 11 from 6:00 to 7:30 at First Lutheran Church. If you served as a St. Philips volunteer for SOS, and would like to attend the dinner, please contact Kay Mack at 556-3031.

A new choir for St. Philip’s is starting in May. This group will sing once a month for the 9 AM Mass, and rehearse 45 minutes prior. This is a very informal group that will sing mostly unison and two part music. This choir is great for brand new singers and experienced

singers alike. The first portion of rehearsal will focus on vocal technique for those who have always wanted to learn how to sing. This is a great opportunity for those with busy schedules, or those who often work evenings and cannot join choirs that rehearse in the evenings. Contact Aana Freihammer if you are interested in joining as soon as possible. We start May 24th.

Holy Spirit Newman Center News... A note of thanks to the folks of St. Philip’s for your generosity to the students attending the Newman Center at BSU during the recent school year. From those helping with finance and maintenance issues to those who cooked meals for the Tuesday night suppers…THANK YOU! Our last Sunday night Mass is this Sunday at 7pm. The last Mass for the school year is Tuesday, May 5th at 5:30 PM. Much planning has already taken place for the 2015-16 school year as we look to expand our programs and ministry. Thanks again! -Fr. Don

Mary in History and Theology Theology Day at Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary

A great deal of what we know about the Blessed Mother is simply a matter of faith and legend. Should that be a problem for contemporary Christians seeking clarification of the Church’s teachings? And why should Mary get so much attention, anyhow? Through a historical and theological analysis of Mary, Fr. Michael Patella, O.S.B., seeks in his presentation to construct an understanding of Mary that draws heavily from the Tradition and moves it into the twenty-first century. Fr. Patella is Professor of New Testament at the School of Theology and Seminary at Saint John’s University, where he also serves as the seminary rector and director of its Holy Land Studies program. May 7, check-in from 6 to 6:30 PM and presentation from 6:30 to 9 PM, Basilica, Minneapolis. Free event. Light refreshments provided. Registration is required: www.csbsju.edu/sot/theologyday, 320-363-3570 or [email protected].

Stand for Life By Brian Gibson, Executive Director

Pro-Life Action Ministries of St. Paul, MN

When Christians are present at abortion clinics, babies’ lives are saved. Pro-abortion groups know this. Internal memos from Planned Parenthood officials point out a percentage of “no-shows” every time “protestors” are out there. There are times when a woman will stop to thank a ‘witness for life’ for the life of her child. The woman informs that seeing someone present was all she needed to turn away and that she never told anyone at the time. (The countless unknown babies saved.) Abortion clinics close. The witness in recent years of the 40 Days for Life campaigns, as well as other prayer efforts at abortion clinics, is the closure of these clinics. The peaceful, prayer-filled presence of Christians keeping vigil, coming back regularly and consistently in front of clinics has been an important part of closing dozens of clinics across the country, including the first ever to close in Minnesota because of pro-life efforts (through campaigns at Regions Hospital in St. Paul). Persistent and consistent prayer presence works. - PRO-LIFE ACTION NEWS, Vol. 35 No. 2; April 2015
