A Healthy Learning Community “Collaboration & Cooperation”

Over the past two weeks we have been blessed through two significant events in our school community. Last Tuesday the Year 6 and 7s hosted their PYP Learning Exhibition and this week we have enjoyed PE Week. While very different activities, at the heart of their success was the collaboration and cooperation of staff, students and parents. I was impressed by the standard of work shown by our wonderful Year 6 and 7s at the exhibition. At the beginning of the exhibition process Year 7 students were matched up with staff mentors (parents for the year 6s). Mentors regularly met with students to discus their inquiry, help them over hurdles, encourage them and monitor their progress. Another key part of this project involves the students’ support of each other by providing ideas and feedback, sharing resources, setting up the displays and celebrating together when the job was done. I saw confident children passionately sharing their learning with anyone that would listen. During PE week students young and old have shared in a variety of activities (eg jump rope for heart, skating, dancing and skipping). Again I was so encouraged to see students looking out for each other as they skated like mad things around the hard play, organised themselves during the skipping activities, came prepared each day and danced for fun and joy at the disco. St Paul uses the analogy of a human body to show how (Christian) communities live and work together:

“For just as the body is one and has many members... And all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ….For the body does not consist of one member but of many… If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together...Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.“(1 Corinthians 12:12, 14, 26 and 27)

When everyone plays their part and supports each other (in big and small things) there are invariably fabulous outcomes, not only in the learning that occurs but also in the way we live together as a community. A big thank you to all members of this community for helping the St Peters’ body function in such healthy ways.

Profile

It was great to see so many people attending this year’s ‘Sharing the planet’ exhibition. The students worked hard on presenting an engaging, collaborative inquiry identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues and problems.

Well done to all the students, teachers, mentors and families involved in this process.

Coming home this week to all families is a photo page with comments from the students about this year’s Exhibition. So, keep an eye out for this.

Toolbox Parenting Hot Tips

One Together is a workshop that aims to encourage and equip single parents to not only survive single parenting but to prosper and grow as a single parent. The focus will be on the one resource single parents will need to work on to parent well - and that is themselves. They have power over how they think and act. One parent. Their best.

One Together is a 2.5 hour workshop that consists of short DVD presentations, (similar to the Toolbox Parenting group sessions), group discussion, self reflection and group brainstorming for solutions. Group interaction is an important part of the workshop as it encourages a network of support. In addition participants realise they are not alone and others are going through or have gone through the same experiences. The group’s discussion builds problem solving skills and confidence in the participants’ ability to be able to handle some of the demanding aspects of single parenting. There is an easy to follow workbook to record answers and contains some of the material for later reference (cost $10).

Workshop Reviews "…very informative and gave useful ideas on how to better my relationship with my children and how to show them more love" single Dad age 43 "I found the topics and info covered in each topic was very helpful, relevant, practical and was very beneficial to become a confident single parent to be able to raise happy, well-adjusted children into adults." Single Mum age 39 "I found the course to be very useful, with many practical ideas and information, that could apply to single parents from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstance" single Mum age 29 If you are interested and available to attend on Thursday or Friday mornings, please contact James Ziersch mobile: 0435008513

One Together Workshop

Assertiveness game The best way for children to become confident in dealing with mean or bullying behaviour is to have lots of practice at how to respond. Even pre-schoolers can learn the difference between an aggressive, a passive, and an assertive response. Make it a role-play game with toys or dolls, or act out the characters yourselves. Goldilocks and the three bears provide a familiar template for this game. If one character reacts to bullying with "Hey back off!", one with “don’t.....please?”, and one with "I don’t like that and I want you to stop it", you can have lots of fun deciding together which response was "too hard", which one was "too soft", and which one was "just right." Children love the chance to pretend to be someone else and to learn something useful in a playful environment.

What makes Christmas an enjoyable experience in your

family? Every family has its own rituals and traditions that make the season special. (Although, families whose parents have separated may find Christmas a mix of positive and negative emotions). Do you know what each member of your family enjoys the most about Christmas? Before things start getting hectic, take the time to sit down and talk about what makes Christmas enjoyable for each of your children. Often the elaborate, expensive, or time-consuming things are not actually what our children treasure the most. It might be the stories you read, the baking you do together, putting up the lights or decorating the tree or putting the stamps on all the Christmas card envelopes, but you’ll do it with a new appreciation when you know it’s what makes Christmas enjoyable for your children. It’s also a good time to identify any new Christmas traditions that you’d like to introduce into your family life, especially if you are now a single parent family.

God bless your parenting, James Ziersch

We won 75-48. we all played really well as a team. We were all encouraging each other to get the ball and hit it over the net. Lauren had a really good time. Taylor

C Grade Cricket We had a very cloase game on Saturday. Unfortunately we lost. Chris got 2 great wickets! I also got a wicket and Luke, Nick and Jacob played pretty well. Josh

Yr 6 Basketball We won 20-22. We all played really well as a team. I think it was our best defensive and offensive game we have ever had. Jonathon

Year 6 Netball We had a great game and every week we are definitely improving. We all played very well as a team and the encouragement helped a lot. Isabella

Year 4 Basketball Last week in year 4 basketball we played against Coromadel Valley. They were fast in the first half and we were only able to beat them by 2 points. Then in the second half we started to pick up our game a bit and we ended up beating them 30-12. I shot two goals and Lachie shot four, Luke shot three and Harry shot two. After the game we had snake shots. This is when you go on the other court and you shot from three point line and if you get it in you get a snake. I was soo close but I missed. Eduard

Year 2/3 Netball Cancelled due to thunderstorms.

Volleyball

Kanga Cricket We didn’t win. Fletcher, Connor, Alex, Seb and I played really well. Cam played well too. William

Year 5 Basketball No Game
