Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
What is your goal in life?
I’m sure most you were up early on Saturday morning for the Opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in London. Quite exciting wasn’t it but can you imagine how highly anticipated it has been for those who are competing? For four years and more, athletes have been dedicating hours upon hours to work and train to compete on an international scale with one goal: winning a gold medal.
As far back as 776BC, athletes have gone into strict training to gain the top prize. Today it’s a gold medal. For ancient Greek athletes it was a sacred olive tree wreath placed on their head in the vestibule of the temple of Zeus. The effort was immense, however the losers were many and the glory of the victor often short-lived.
While we admire the discipline and dedication of an Olympic athlete, the apostle Paul encourages the same dedication, discipline and determination in pursuing a life with the Lord Jesus. Life can easily become consumed with the temporary and transient. Perhaps today is an opportunity to ask, “What am I doing today to spend time and energy pursuing the one thing that will last forever—a close and growing relationship with Jesus Christ?”
Paul “beat his body” and made it his slave to proclaim Jesus to others and to grow in his personal walk with Jesus. To what do I have to say “No!” in order to have time each day to spend reading the Bible or in personal devotion and prayer? What disciplines do I need to practice to reflect the love of Jesus in my attitudes and actions each day? What priorities do I need to adjust to ensure that my family and I are intensely pursuing that which really matters—the love of the Lord Jesus and a life honoring him?
Today, with the Lord’s help, run in such a way to gain the prize that lasts forever! Tomorrow do the same…and the next day…and the next! Jesus says, “Be faithful to the point of death and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank you for pursuing us with a focus and intensity that took you to the cross for each of us. Instill in us the discipline, determination and dedication to pursue a closer and growing relationship with you so that when our final day on this earth comes, we will enjoy standing in your temple receiving the crown of life you won for us. Amen.

Illness
Please note—there have been some confirmed cases of Influenza A this term in our school community. The following information has been taken from the Department of Health “You’ve got what? Prevention and control of notifiable and other infectious diseases in children and adults”. Seasonal Influenza; This is an infection of the nose, throat and lungs caused by the influenza virus. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, headache, runny nose, muscle aches, fatigue, sore throat and cough. The incubation period is 1-3 days (time between becoming infected and developing symptoms) The infectious period is 1 day before and up to 5 days after the onset of symptoms but can be longer in young children. Control of spread; A person with suspected or confirmed influenza should be excluded from child care, school or work until they are free of the above symptoms and they feel well. Wash hands after sneezing or coughing Wipe down all frequently touched surfaces with a cleaning cloth dampened with detergent. For more information you can phone Health Direct on 1800 022 222, go to the SA Health website: www.health.sa.gov.au or check with your doctor.
Working Bee
Thank you to those families who have returned their working bee slips advising of their ability to attend next Saturday’s working bee. Workers who are involved this time include families from Rooms 7, 8 and B. The usual tasks will be on the list to be done on the day and useful tools to bring along include forks, shovels, wheelbarrows, gardening gloves, pruners, rakes, yard brooms and cobweb brooms. Attendees on the day should make sure they sign in—which serves two purposes. The first is for insurance and the second is so that your name does not reappear on the working bee roster for next term.

How we organise ourselves
Year 6/7 Elections Throughout term 2, the year 6/7 students were inquiring into the central idea “Governments are responsible for laws and keeping society functioning and in order”. In the Resource Centre, we decided to have an in-depth inquiry into one of the lines of inquiry, “the electoral process.” Our trip to Canberra was an excellent lead into our Unit, giving us an overview of the electoral process in Australia. Once we had found out what the students knew about the electoral process, students were placed into parties that emerged from their previous unit of inquiry into beliefs and actions.
From then on, the parties directed their own inquiry into the electoral process, with me as a guide and facilitator. Each lesson they were engaged with the task and learnt a lot from actually being involved in the process. With any inquiry, it’s great to include others and we decided we would include the whole school and teach them all about elections by allowing them to vote. Last Thursday, with the help of John from the Electoral Education Centre, the whole school used the preferential system to vote for the party they wanted to form
‘government’ here at St Peters. The successful party was Family Fun, with Rhiannon Evans as their candidate. The Family Fun party’s main platform was to organise more school events that include family including bouncy castles and cupcakes! Throughout the following weeks, I will be working not only with the winning team, but also the other parties to ensure their platforms will be addressed and that the voice of the students in year 6/7 will be part of future plans here at St Peters. School Performance Resource Centre News
There are many students borrowing each week from our Resource Centre, which is great to see! Please be aware that books taken from the Resource Centre need to be returned in the same condition. This being the case, library bags for borrowing are essential, especially for the JP's. If your child has an accident with a book, please bring the book to the Resource Centre and speak with myself or Mrs Smith. If neither of us are available, please leave the book on the counter with a little note attached. This stops the books from sitting in the return chute for longer than is necessary. Thank you for your support in this matter. It helps our books stay in good condition for as long as possible.
Bronwyn Wilson RC Manager
Excitement is building as we look forward to our three performances next week of The Rock Slinger and his Greatest Hit. The students and their teachers have been working very hard to prepare for this fantastic musical event on our school calendar.
Thank you for returning your ticket order forms. Tickets have been issued this week and we can advise that there are still tickets available for the matinee performance next Tuesday 7 August, and a small number for the evening performance next Thursday evening (9 August). Tickets for the evening performance on Tuesday 7 August have been fully allocated.
We won’t be issuing a second round order form. However, if you would like additional tickets for the Tuesday matinee performance or the Thursday evening performance, please contact the school office with your request.
As we can only comfortably hold 300 people in the hall, this is the maximum number of tickets we can allocate for each performance. Please understand that we will not be able to admit anyone to the performance without a ticket. For the matinee which begins at 1.45pm, the doors to the performance space will be locked until 1.30pm. Audience members will enter through the double doors in the foyer by the school reception desk. For the evening performances, which begin at 7pm, only one door to the facility will be open and that will be the front door, which will open at 6.30pm. Everyone will need to enter through that door, including the student performers and ticket holders.
Note—parents/caregivers collecting children from SPLOSHC next Tuesday and Thursday should also be mindful that the back gate will be locked at 6pm.
We trust that these procedures will ensure that we have a safe place in which to share the performance will you all.
Book Club Orders
Last call for Scholastic Book Orders—must be received by tomorrow Friday 3 August 2012.
Parking Control
City of Mitcham has forwarded to us some information regarding their enforcement of parking restrictions around schools and kindergartens.
To provide for student safety around roadways at school drop off and pick up times, any breaches of the Australian Road Rules observed by compliance officers may result in the issue of an expiation notice.
Attached to this newsletter is a brochure provided by the City of Mitcham regarding parking regulations.
Parents—please note: There will be NO school choir or Junior Primary singing group on Wednesday
morning next week, due to the late night concert on Tuesday night.
FOUND A grey ladies coat (Size 8) has been found in the Church kitchen. If this belongs to you,
please claim it from the Church office.

Toolbox Parenting
Hot Tip Tips for teen boys
Every age and stage has its special challenges and rewards, without exception. Here are a couple of points to reflect on if you have a teenage boy in your family:
• Remember that a lot of his love and appreciation of you may not be expressed in ways you can detect. Trust that he loves you and you are still very important to him, even if he doesn't tell you as often, or as openly.
• Strive for a balance between support and space. Don’t ever back off completely or behave as though you don’t care what happens to him, but offer your assistance in a way that leaves him free to decide if he takes up the offer.
God bless your parenting, James Ziersch
Chess Coaching by David from ChessLife has recommenced in the Big Room from 1.05pm on Fridays. Students are to bring their lunch and will finish at 2pm. The Coach will not charge families ($5 a session) for a child who is away from school or is required by the school to do an alternative activity, but will charge the family if a child is at school and simply wants to play with friends instead. Registration for Chess coaching should be understood as a commitment to attend every session each term, rather than a casual arrangement when a child feels like attending when they have nothing better to do.
Thursday Lunch Chess Club Commencing today, there is an opportunity for casual playing of chess and friendly competition, and an opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of playing chess. To join in, students should meet with Mr Z by the Resource Centre after eating lunch.
Upcoming Chess Competitions Chess School SA Championship Adelaide Hills—Wednesday 5 September at St Mark’s Lutheran School, Hampden Road, Mount Barker 9am—2pm. Girls Only Chess School SA Championship—Wednesday 12 September at Loreto College, Portrush Road, Marryatville.
Registration forms are available at the school office.

Year 2/3 Netball At the start we were really good but in the second half and the third half we went down a bit and we were in different spots with taller people. Both of the Emilys did a really good job. Amelia Hammerl
