2018 NCEA Outline

This is New Zealand’s national qualification. Subjects are divided into a number of Achievement Standards NCEA is offered at 3 levels: Year 11 – NCEA Level 1 Year 12 – NCEA Level 2 Year 13 – NCEA Level 3 and Level 4 Scholarship Further details are available by visiting www.ncea.govt.nz

Each subject is divided into a number of Standards worth varying number of credits. There are between 4 to 9 Standards in each subject. Each Standard is worth 3-8 credits. The total credits per subject is usually around 18 – 24

Year 11 – NCEA Level 1 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy, Mathematics, Science and English plus 3 further NCEA Level 1 Subjects Year 12 – NCEA Level 2 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy, English and either Statistics or Calculus plus 3 further NCEA Level 2 Subjects Year 13 – NCEA Level 3 At St Peter’s College students must take Theology & Philosophy plus 5 further NCEA Level 3 Subjects

Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L1 Maths to satisfy the numeracy requirement for Level 1 and University Entrance

Students require a minimum of 10 credits in L2 English (5 Reading/5 Writing) to satisfy the literacy requirement for University Entrance. This can also be gained through L2 Te Reo Maori.

Grading Level 1: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits including 10 in Maths

(numeracy) and 10 in English/Te Reo (Literacy) Level 2: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 1 and at

least 60 from Level 2 or above Level 3: Awarded to students who gain a minimum of 80 credits; up to 20 from Level 2 and at

least 60 from Level 3 At each Level students require: 50 Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with Excellence 50 Merit or Excellence Credits to gain an NCEA endorsed with Merit.

University Entrance To gain University Entrance a student will need to achieve the following:

A full pass at NCEA Level 3

Three subjects – at Level 3 or above, made up of: o 14 credits each, in three approved UE subjects

Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above from specific standards, made up of: o 5 credits in reading o 5 credits in writing

Numeracy -10 credits at Level 1 or above in Mathematics

For entry in 2018 the University of Auckland have their own literacy requirement. To enter a University course at Auckland, students need to have 17 credits at NCEA English Level Two or Three.

# Entry into some subjects without prerequisites is still possible with Head of Faculty approval

Passing NCEA Level 2 involves gaining a minimum of 80 credits.

Assuming that a student has passed NCEA Level 1, 20 credits may be drawn down from that to count

towards the NCEA Level 2 qualification

Across the 6 subjects in Year 12, St Peter’s offers students the chance to obtain about 120 credits.

These are a mix of Internal Achievement Standards which are taken during school time and External

Achievement Standards which are taken in the exam season at the end of the academic year. The

object for every student should be to pass the standards at as high a level as possible, aiming for

Merit and Excellence as their level of attainment.

Subjects outline specific course costs. NCEA itself costs approximately $80 for Level 2

Level 2: Religious Education Course Description: At level 2, the Theology and Philosophy department offers 4 achievement standards, each worth 6 credits, each assessed internally. As a powerful way of studying World Religions, level 2 students begin the year with a study of suffering in Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism. In the next standard students focus on the changes in the Roman Catholic Eucharistic tradition from its inception at the Last Supper to how it is celebrated in St. Peter’s College beautiful chapel. The third standard analyzes the Biblical theme of call and its influence on such contemporary figures as Mother Teresa and Dr Martin Luther King. The final standard analyzes the St. Peter’s College service programme in light of the social doctrine of the Church.

Level Two: English

Course Description: Level 2 builds on the concepts introduced in Level 1 English. Students will be taught a range of skills that will deepen their understanding of how language is used by writers and directors for an intended purpose as well as being able to analyse ideas within texts. The selection of internal and external Achievement Standards is highly demanding, but allows the students a range of opportunities to gain important Literacy credits for University Entrance.

Course Description: In Level 2 students strengthen their receptive and productive skills and further develop their language through exposure to a wider range of texts and literacy strategies. This course is part 1 of a 2 year course designed to allow students to gain literacy credits for tertiary study in New Zealand. Credits: approximately 20 (English / English Language ) Entry Requirements: for English Language Learners, entry determined by placement tests Course costs: Nil but students will need to buy the recommended Grammar Text they will use in all

years they study at St Peter's College. Details available from their teacher and the book is for sale at

the stationery shop.

Leads onto: Level 3 English International Level Two: Drama

Course Description: In Level 2 Drama, students will continue to enhance and develop their performance skills with the

addition of skills and techniques that are more complex and challenging.

The use of and knowledge of how to operate and apply performance technologies such as lighting,

set design/ construction and costuming a performance will give broader scope to the students

learning. Students will be required to perform roles in plays that are both scripted and devised.

Students will gain a greater understanding of the structure of a play/ performance as they approach

it from the Director’s point of view. They will be required to direct actors in specific scenes in both

set and devised texts. All students will be expected to attend as many live theatrical performances as

possible. A journal forms the means in which all notes are recorded and this also forms a log

containing information of all the shows that students are expected to attend throughout the year.

Course Description: Students will learn about the design process and complete tasks related to research, practical skills and developing ideas. The research involves talking about art and using this understanding to influence own work. A range of practical skills will be learnt including drawing techniques and Photoshop and Illustrator. These skills will be used in the creation of work that combines typography and image together. Design in The Arts is a creative subject and is about exploring new ways of expressing yourself. All three internals are project based and the external is a two-board folio submission. Level Two: Painting

Course Description: Students will complete tasks related to research, practical skills and developing ideas. The research involves talking about art and using this understanding to influence own work. Students will continue to develop their skills in a range of wet and dry media in the creation of work in their chosen style to communicate their own ideas. Painting is a creative subject and is about exploring new ways of expressing yourself. Illustration can also be a part of painting. All three internals are project based and the external is a two-board folio submission. Course Description: Students will learn a lot of technical information about how to use a camera and post production. They then use this knowledge to complete tasks related to research, practical skills and developing ideas. The research involves talking about art and using this understanding to influence own work. A range of practical skills will be learnt including drawing techniques, studio lighting and Photoshop. Photography involves work outside of the classroom that must be completed for homework. Photography is a creative subject and is about exploring new ways of expressing yourself. All three internals are project based and the external is a two-board folio submission. Credits: 26 (14 Internal/ 12 External) Entry Requirements: at least 14 Credits in Level 1 Visual Art including the external Course Costs: $130 materials and printing fee + Photography art kit. Course Description: Level 2 Accounting aims to provide knowledge and understanding of accounting as a financial language for trading and service businesses. You will apply financial knowledge and skills to practical situations and research an individual business. Students will develop their learning by extending skills taught at Level 1, applying them specifically to the processing of data and the analysis and interpretation of information. The course has a computer-based component giving the opportunity for hands-on experience of practical accounting work. Level 2 has the prerequisite that students must have completed Level 1 Accounting to a satisfactory level Credits: 20 (7 Internal/ 13 External) Entry Requirements: 14 Credits in Level 1 Accounting, or permission from the Head of Faculty Course Costs: Course Book $30 Leads onto: Level 3 Accounting Level Two: Economics Course Description: Level 2 Economics includes the exploration of the macro-economic issues of international trade, economic growth, inflation and unemployment. Students will develop their learning through discussion, research and study of economic literature. This is a self-contained course and while completion of level one economics is preferable, it is not essential and students with satisfactory grades in Level One English and/or Mathematics may study Level 2 Economics. Credits: 26 (14 Internal/ 12 External) Entry Requirements: 14 Credits in Level 1 Economics, English or Mathematics Course Costs: Resource Book = $30 Leads onto: Level 3 Economics Level Two: Business Studies Course Description: This course covers business formation, function and management of a large business. Students will

continue to build on the skills developed in level one Business Studies around various factors that can

impact upon a business in the current New Zealand economic climate. Important ideas are developed

in the classroom and also through links with the local business community. The internal assessments

are all research based and cover market research and motivation, as well as setting up and running a

small business to sell on Market Day and (hopefully) make a profit as well as a contribution to the

community and a charity.

Level Two: Geography

Geography is the study of the environment as the home of people. It seeks to interpret the world and how it changes over time – past, present, and future. It explores the relationships and connections between people and both natural and cultural environments. Geography investigates the ways in which features are arranged on the earth’s surface. It describes and explains the patterns and processes that create them. Students learn to think spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies to obtain, present and analyse information. Topics studied include differences in development, wealth disparities and inequalities, urban patterns and distribution of services, urban land usage and growth as well as a geographic skills component. Course Description:

This course builds upon the foundation of Level 1 History. Both the internal and external assessments are of a similar nature to the Level 1 History course, but require a deeper understanding of changes and historic movements occurring over a significant period of time. There is a strong literacy component as students are required to write engaging essays and be able to explain their points in depth. An understanding of historical sources, their advantages, limitations and usefulness towards historical study is also undertaken. As in Level 1 History, a two-part research component is offered, allowing students to research a topic of their own choice and put together a portfolio of their research findings. The main themes offered in Level 2 History relate to independence movements and protests such as the Mau Movement. Level Two: Chinese

Course Description: Level 2 Chinese is a 1 year bilingual course for both native speaker Chinese students and foreign

language learners and is designed to help students to move between the English and Chinese

languages. Students learn to communicate information and opinions through diverse familiar text

types, responding to others ideas and opinions and communicating appropriately in different

situations. The assessments for NCEA Level 2 consist of a writing portfolio, a presentation, a reading exam and a listening exam.

Students may also attempt the HSK international exam.

Course Description: The course is designed to allow students to use French confidently in familiar situations. By the end of this course students will be able to initiate and sustain a conversation with a sympathetic native speaker, speaking at some length if necessary to express personal opinions and to offer advice. They can use and understand increasingly complex language patterns in unfamiliar contexts. They can write longer passages in varying formats with increasing accuracy. The assessments for NCEA Level 2 consist of a writing portfolio, a presentation, a reading exam and a listening exam.

Course Description: Course aims to develop musical skills with an emphasis on practical work. Students continue with their instrument/vocal study with weekly lessons, as well as learning about composition and music technology during class times.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION FACULTY Head of Faculty Mr Andrew Illman: [email protected] Level Two: Academic Physical Education Course Description: The course requires students to complete six achievement standards.

A well balanced and in depth Level 2 course pushes students to understand the nature and discipline

of exercise physiology as well as biomechanical analysis. Introduction into sociological themes of

sport and exercise are explored allowing students to unpack concepts and ideas that have particular

interest to their chosen sports or avenues of passion.

Achievement standard 2.5 - Sports sociology Examine the significance for self, others and society of a sporting event, a physical activity or a

festival.

Achievement standard 2.6 - Coaching Touch rugby LEADERSHIP and GROUP DYNAMICS Evaluate leadership strategies that contribute to the effective functioning of a group.

Achievement standard 2.3 - FITNESS and TRAINING - Physiology Demonstrate understanding of the application of biophysical principles to training for physical activity. Achievement standard 2.2 - Biomechanics of movement Demonstrate understanding of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills. Course Description: Level 2 NCEA Biology is a course which builds on skills and knowledge gained from Level 1 science.

Internal standards are based largely on practical biology which includes field work. External

standards are more theory based.

Course Description: Level 2 Chemistry is a course which builds on Level 1 Science. The internals are based on practical

work and the externals are theory based. Level 2 Chemistry is a prerequisite for Level 3 Chemistry.

Course Description: Level 2 Physics NCEA is a course which builds on Physics learning from Level 1 Science. This course

has 23 available credits in 5 achievement standards. The internal achievement standards include a 4

credit practical based standard and a 3 credit standard on nuclear and atomic physics. Three external

standards are sat in November. The final external standards assess knowledge on waves, mechanics,

electricity and electromagnetism. Level 2 NCEA Physics is a prerequisite for Level 3 physics.

Credits: 23 (7 Internal/ 16 External) Entry Requirements: 14 Credits in Level 1 Science including 8 external credits in the Mechanics & Electromagnetism Physics standard, plus an external pass in Mathematics either AS91027 Algebraic procedures and/or AS91028 Relationships, or D grade or above in IGCSE Physics. Course Description: Students will build on valuable skills learnt in Level One DVC. They will use a combination of: 2D and 3D freehand sketches that communicate design ideas Use rendering techniques and CAD modelling to show the form and function of design ideas Create portfolios of design work using visual communication strategies Students will explore graphics practice in two projects centered around product and architectural design. They will undertake the design process to produce creative outcomes that address a given brief. This course will teach students critical thinking and problem solving using industry knowledge appropriate to creative design. Credits: 22 (19 Internal/ 3 External)

Entry Requirements: 15 credits at Level One, successful completion of AS91068 and AS91063

Course Costs: $95 plus Graphics kit + 3D printing costs (TBA)

Level Two: Hard Materials

Course Description: This Unit Standard course is made up of practical and theory aspects of Building and Construction. The practical outcomes produced by the students mesh with the theory content of the course at all times. The student outcomes are constructed in such a way as to give them the maximum number of learning experiences of common Carpentry practices. Topics studied are: Use of Power tools for the trades, fixed machinery, Work safety and Garden Furniture. Credits: 24 (24 Internal)

Course Description: In this course, students follow prescribed workbooks at Level 2 in the Cookery, Food and Beverage and Generic Hospitality domains. The course is underwritten by the Manukau Institute of Technology. Assessment is based on completed workbooks, theory examinations and 3 practical assessments at MIT. Theory work comprises 60% of the course work. Successful students are awarded credits at level 2 as well as certificates of achievement from MIT. Students have an opportunity to not only achieve NCEA credits but gain a MIT Certificate in Basic Culinary Skills, Kitchen Hygiene and the Art of Coffee. These Unit Standards can be used as entry for Certificate and Diploma studies at AUT, MIT and other Hospitality Industry Training Organisations. Credits: 20 (Internal – Unit Standards) Entry Requirements: A minimum of 15 credits in Level 1 Hospitality.
