HIGH SCHOOL TEEN MINISTRY High school teens are welcome. The meetings begin after the 5PM Mass on Sunday. Starting time is 6:30PM.

GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: THE HOPE THAT

COMES FROM HEAVEN Hope is the theme of the First Sunday of Advent. In the readings for Mass, Isaiah describes a future in which all is well because (1) God is recognized as the highest authority and (2) obeying him is the people's highest priority. This vision gave great hope to the oppressed Israelites. Today if we look at this as a description of heaven, it gives great hope to us, too. When we die, "terms" will be "imposed" upon us because we did not stay entirely on the paths of God (a good reason for purgatory), but we will be living in the light of the Lord after death and there will be no more wars to battle. Knowing that this is our future, we can look at our present trials as preparations for heaven. The weapons that we use now to defeat and overcome the powers of darkness can be used as plowshares for enriching our soil (our earthly life), bringing us into new growth and producing a harvest in ministry. Sufferings that are turned into ministries to help others make hardships very valuable. Although Isaiah was speaking of the coming of the world's Messiah through the Jews, these verses remind us that when we respect God's authority and make imitating Christ our highest priority, all is well for us. Our battles against evil aren't over yet, but Jesus has already won the victory for us. Our hope is not based on a wish for peace; our hope comes from the reality of what Jesus has already done and what he will do. So, "let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord!" (Psalm 122). The Gospel reading tells us that our hope is realized only if we stay awake and alert to the activities of Christ. What are you despairing about? Despair and worry are merely distractions that make us forget that Christ has already won the battle. If we stay alert to the presence of Christ, recognizing his authority and following his ways, we live in hope -- not wishful thinking, but a hope that's based firmly on reality. What are you despairing about? What would it take for you to feel hopeful? In what way do you need Jesus to come to you now? What can you do to become more aware of his presence at your side? How do you find hope in difficulties? Describe a time when you nearly lost all hope. How did Jesus rescue you from this? © 2019 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources, www.catholicdr.com.

Month of the Immaculate Conception Dear friends in the Lord: Soon our parishes will collect the offering for the Retirement Fund for Religious, an annual appeal that benefits some 30,000 senior sisters, brothers and religious order priests. Our elderly religious offer a shining example of what it means to “serve the Lord with gladness” (Psalm 100:2). During their days of active ministry, they worked tirelessly to build Catholic schools and hospitals, promote social justice, and embrace the neediest among us. In retirement, many continue in volunteer ministry, and all pray for the needs of our Church and world. Inspired by love, their service, past and present, is marked by joy and a deep desire to do the will of God. As you know, many religious communities find it difficult to provide for aging members. Your gift, which will be collected on December 15 will allow for vital funding for medications, nursing care and more. It will also help congregations to plan for the future retirement needs. We are all asked to support many worthy causes. So, I invite you to give what you can and to pray for God’s continued blessing on all our women and men religious. Remember, they are praying for you. With gratitude and prayerful best wishes to all for a blessed Advent season, I am, Faithfully in Christ, +Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Religious Education Program is open from 10:00AM to 2:30PM Monday through Thursday and at night from 5:45PM to 8:30PM, Monday through Wednesday. Please call before you come to our office. All payments and registration take place in the rectory office. There were already two confirmation meetings for parents in October. These were important meetings. If you did not attend either one, you will need to call to make an appointment with Mrs. Cobb. There is an important packet that is dated and was handed out. Packets will not be handed out to students. The next parent meeting will be in April. All Confirmation students need to hand in their Saint report by December 9th for Monday students and 11th for Wednesday students. Please pray for our students.
