Helping us help
othersAs we continue to grow and move
forward through this year—St. Pete Pride’s 11th year of service to the
community—we are proud to have provided innovative, high-quality, community-based support and education. Guided only by feedback from the community, I am additionally proud to introduce to you the St. Pete Pride Community Grant Program.
Our community asked St. Pete Pride to help build stronger environments, healthier living and more fulfi lling lives through empowerment. St. Pete Pride answered through the creation of the Community Grant Program.
We do this with your support and I want to acknowledge that your giving allows St. Pete Pride to help others. St. Pete Pride is able to continue its mission of providing the community high-quality education and care through the Community Grant Program by way of your generous donations and acts of kindness. We are so fortunate to live in such a caring and compassionate community. We are fortunate, too, that as a community we all demonstrate a deep understanding that we are a family committed to
the work that still needs to be done to ensure equality for all of our family members.
What an exciting time it is as we celebrate Pride and look to the future of building our Community Grant Program. It is a pleasure to work alongside you to strengthen lives, guarded by no other principles than those of the community and what is true, fair and honest, while respecting the LGBT community.
Just as our LGBT leaders in the past paved a way for us, it is our duty to pave the way for our future. Collectively, we must help put a stop to injustice, fear and abuse within our community. We should be fi lled with encouragement, hope and prosperity. St. Pete Pride and the Community Grant Program will help ensure success within our community for years to come.
e St. Pete Pride team and I would like to welcome you, our sponsors and volunteers to join us in our celebration of Pride throughout the month of June and the day of Pride on Saturday, June 29.
Again, thank you for a wonderful 11 years of support. We look forward to many, many more.
For more information on the Community Grant Program, sponsorship packages, becoming a volunteer or events throughout month of June, please visit our new website at StPetePride.com.
Aaron HorchaST. PETE PRIDE BOARD
PRESIDENT
7 ST. PETE PRIDE 2013
Let me be the first to welcome you to Pride Carnivale—a celebration of the LGBT Community and the largest Pride event in
Florida! Who would have imagined? Only in St Pete!
It’s a testament to the power of Pride when someone who has never been to a parade will have some familiarity with it. ey typically paint a collective picture of a Mardi Gras-style party fi lled with twinks in speedos, scantily clad lesbians on motorcycles, sweaty drag queens, and rainbows and beads fl ying everywhere.
Forty years ago the conversation was much di erent. en we had gay-ins, Liberation Marches, and Gay Freedom Day—events that were more activism than celebration. ese events were spawned from the Stonewall Riots, where gay men and women declared in one voice that they will no longer be invisible or forced to hide in closets—an act of defi ance against a society that treated us as if we deserved all the bad things done to us.
Without all the decades of shaming directed at us, there
would have been no need to create a day in which we stand up to be seen. And as time has gone on, marches have become parades, and parades have become celebrations.
e key to the success of Pride lies in the hands of those it stands for, and represents many things to many people—a right to be, a sense of belonging, a statement of pride, a fi ght for survival, a time to remember, a cause for acceptance and equality. Pride is a choreographed chorus that creates a festival of life and creativity—a sensational celebration at the peak of summer. But at its big, bold, brash, disco-pumping heart, Pride is about love.
e right to love whomever we choose, love without restrictions, love for all kind, love without boundaries, love for all time. And that’s at the heart of our identity—a symbol of our one infi nite resource that manifest itself
in a glorious, infi nite number of ways.
is Pride season, come celebrate with us the power and beauty of diversity, and inspire the world to love one another.

ST. PETERSBURG | Eleven years ago, St. Pete Pride began when a handful of dedicated people created a grassroots, local organization—and that tradition continues this year.
Local volunteers work the festival, board members all live locally and the entertainers performing throughout the day at the Street Festival all have local ties to the community.
“We wanted to make the festival about the community while at the same time being fi scally responsible,” says Eric Skains, St. Pete Pride’s executive director. “It’s great to have these expensive headliners, but it’s hard to justify the expense when the festival is free. Plus, the festival is supposed to be about our community, and what better way to bring exposure
to the great music talent in the area than to put them in front of 100,000 people?”
And that shift will help fund Pride’s Community Grants Program.
“ ose local groups and entertainers want to be a part of the festival and by performing they help us convert resources back into the community,” says Aaron

Horcha, St. Pete Pride Board President.Of course, the ongoing commitment
to the local community doesn’t mean that St. Pete Pride hasn’t evolved. ere are plenty of changes for 2013, and possibly one of the most notable is the shortened schedule of events sandwiching the annual Saturday Street Festival.
“We’ll still have the month-long of community events, but decided to move most of the events to one week to help build the weekend and make it a true destination event,” says Skains. “With everything primarily happening on day in years past, a lot of our other events su ered in attendance from visitors outside of the Tampa Bay area. Few people have the ability to take a month-long vacation, but nearly everyone has the means to spend a weekend here. By focusing on that, we help showcase St Petersburg and Tampa Bay to a wider range of visitors.”
Beginning on Wednesday, June 26, St. Pete Pride Carnivale weekend begins with an art show at e Blue Lucy Gallery on Central Avenue as a chance for local LGBT artists to showcase their work. And, as with years past, the weekend ends with a community pool party at e Flamingo Resort on Sunday, June 30.
So while the schedule may look shortened, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other activities throughout the month, Skains says.
e festival and its accompanying events have been dubbed “Pride Carnivale” this year—and that theme will stay with St. Pete Pride for the foreseeable future, according to Skains.
“Carnivale is an umbrella name, with Vision of Art, Noite de Cinima, 27-82 e Concert, Street Festival and Promenade, and Pride Poolside being the events that create Carnivale Weekend,” Skains says. “Last year, Carnivale was chosen as a theme because it was seen as an expression of people and a celebration of life. It’s our hope to carry this through each and every year so people all over
the world know St. Petersburg as the home of Pride Carnivale, much as people know New Orleans as the home of Mardi Gras.”
In 2012, more than 100,000 people attended the Promenade and Street Festival, securing St. Pete Pride as the state’s largest LGBT Pride celebration. is year could see an even higher attendance, thanks to the weekend packed with events.
“We attract people from across the water, around the state and across the country,” says Horcha, emphasizing that St. Pete Pride is a local community event. “While we hold the festival in St. Petersburg, we are all one community, and we want everyone involved and included.”
“What better way to bring exposure to the great music talent in the area than to put them in front of 100,000 people.”—Eric Skains

St. Petersburg | This year, that feeling of Pride may hit the community just a little bit earlier. The night before the annual Street Festival and Promenade—renamed Pride Carnivale in
2013—a pre-Pride concert is slated to light up the State Theatre downtown. Dubbed the “27/82 Concert,” the name signifies the longitude and latitudinal coordinates of the city.
e concert features three musical acts and incorporates the popular Butchlesque fashion show that originated in Sarasota.
“I love this idea,” says Tara Liaschenko of Girl2Girl Productions, the organizational mind behind the concert. “I like the thought of turning our Pride into a destination weekend scenario. People are going to stay in town the entire weekend and it’s great for St. Petersburg, for restaurants. is is just a great formula.”
When Watermark spoke to Girl2Girl Productions, acts were still getting fi nalized. However, contracts were nearly signed for the popular group Uh Huh Her to appear. Liaschenko adds that the concert is for the entire LGBT community, not just parts of it.
“We’re compiling acts that are compatible

with the audience,” she says. “ is is a co-ed event and we want to provide entertainment for men and women.”
And while Butchlesque is technically a lesbian-themed event, both men and women will enjoy the addition of the creative fashion show, says Kim Herbel, who started the show in 2011.
“Butchlesque is like preschool for drag,” Herbel laughs. “Our participants create their own look and it’s staged like a high-energy fashion show. It’s women showcasing what they see as the ‘butch’ look, and everyone’s defi nition of butch is di erent.”
Typically, Butchlesque is a contest, with the audience voting for their favorite butch performer. But for the 27/82 concert, more attention will be paid to the performance aspect of the show.
“We’re so excited to do this with Pride,” Herbel says. “We’ll have a choreographed dance to Psy’s ‘Gentleman’ and we’ll be in our signature colors of red, black and silver. For the fi rst time, we’re incorporating fems into the mix. It’s exciting to think that maybe some of our audience will be there and we’ll be getting greater exposure.”
Coordinating the acts takes planning and patience, according to Liaschenko. But fortunately she and partner Tara Weldon have plenty of experience.
“We have a strong planning background,” Liaschenko explains. “So for us that part is simple. e challenge is on the marketing and promotion side. Pride is strong with that and we’re partnering with TwirlGirl Productions and they will promote the concert as well. It’s about getting the word out and aligning with a strong team.”
e concert begins at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance at StPetePride.com or $30 at the door the night
of the concert. ere is no assigned seating in the State eater and it can hold 705 people. Liaschenko expects a big, but cozy crowd.
e full lineup of acts by June 1, and that lineup will be announced at StPetePride.com and in a future issue of Watermark.
“ e State eatre is familiar with Pride and is happy to be a part of it,” Liaschenko says. “ is is an exciting event for the community and shows that St. Pete Pride is expanding.”
