The Collect of the Day Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray. O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Reading: Job 19:23-27a Lector A reading from the Book of Job. Job said, "O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another."

Psalm 17:1-9

Lector Let us read sections of Psalm 17 together responsively.

1 Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD; give heed to my cry; * listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.

2 Let my vindication come forth from your presence; * let your eyes be fixed on justice.

3 Weigh my heart, summon me by night, * melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.

4 I give no offense with my mouth as others do; * I have heeded the words of your lips.

5 My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; * in your paths my feet shall not stumble.

6 I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; * incline your ear to me and hear my words.

7 Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, * O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand from those who rise up against them.

8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; * hide me under the shadow of your wings,

9 From the wicked who assault me, * from my deadly enemies who surround me.

Lector A reading from Paul’s Letter to the Thessalonians.

As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. Lector Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation (repeat as desired)

The Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and asked him a question, "Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her." Jesus said to them, "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."

Thanksgiving over the Water

Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.

Page 12: St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchstpaulsdekalb.org/images/November_10_2019_REV_Baptism_1030_LL_SK_.pdfrebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction

Silence may be kept. In Unison Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Priest Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins

The Liturgy of the Table Holy Communion, Rite II, Eucharistic Prayer C

The Offertory Sentence

This is what the Lord asks of you and only this: that you act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:8)

During the Offertory Anthem or hymn, the elements of bread and wine are taken to the altar. At the same time, the ushers will collect the monetary offering

Page 14: St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchstpaulsdekalb.org/images/November_10_2019_REV_Baptism_1030_LL_SK_.pdfrebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction

and take that to the altar before the Offertory Anthem or hymn is completed

Offertory Anthem The St. Paul’s Choirs

O Sing Unto Lord Thomas Morley The Great Thanksgiving Priest The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Priest Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Priest Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Priest God of all power, Ruler of the Universe,

you are worthy of glory and praise. People Glory to you for ever and ever. Priest At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of

interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

People By your will they were created and have their being. Priest From the primal elements you brought forth the human race,

and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

People Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight. Priest Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets

and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to

Page 15: St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchstpaulsdekalb.org/images/November_10_2019_REV_Baptism_1030_LL_SK_.pdfrebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction

15

Fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

People By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

Priest And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly

chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Sanctus: Holy is the Lord

Priest And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you

Page 16: St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchstpaulsdekalb.org/images/November_10_2019_REV_Baptism_1030_LL_SK_.pdfrebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction

16

and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

All We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

Priest Lord God of our Ancestors: God of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Jacob, Ishmael and Hagar; Ruth and Naomi, Jonathan and David; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. All Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Priest Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are glad to say, In Unison Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have sinned against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen The Breaking of the Bread

Priest Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

Page 17: St. Paul’s Episcopal Churchstpaulsdekalb.org/images/November_10_2019_REV_Baptism_1030_LL_SK_.pdfrebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction

Welcome! If you are worshipping here for the first time, please sign our guest book. You are welcome to join us

for refreshments after the service in the Parish Hall. Rite of Holy Baptism

Evelynn Ryann Davidson, daughter of Kara and Matthew Davidson, is baptized at the 10:30 A.M. service today. From Mother Barbara

I have a huge request to make of everyone at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul, at least for the next year or so, while I am acclimating myself to St. Paul's culture and how you do things, as I hope to learn how best to support you all in your various endeavors as God's people. Please run all announcements, ideas for projects to enhance the life of the congregation, past me before sharing them generally with the congregation. This will help me to understand how things generically flow from your ministries and the overall ministry of St. Paul's into the community. I welcome everyone's observations regarding this and your feedback! Thank you. In Christ, Barbara+ Adult Formation

The study continues today, November 10th with the book, Active Life: A Spirituality of Work, Creativity and Caring by Parker J. Palmer. Led by Mother Barbara, the discussion will be held in the Conference Room at 9:00 AM. Book Club

The Book Club will meet at Donna de Oliveira’s house, 1413 Reserve Lane, DeKalb, on Friday, November 15th at 5:30 PM. The discussion will be on the essay “God Is the Color of Suffering”, by James Cone from The Changing Face

of God, edited by Frederick Schmidt. Grace Place Meals

Grace Place NIU Campus Ministry is located at the corner of Normal and Lucinda. On Tuesday evenings they share a fellowship meal at 6:00pm followed by worship time. St. Paul’s has provided the meal once or twice a semester for several years. This involves a team of 4 to 5 people. Each person on the team prepares a portion of the meal at home (or buys their contribution) and the food is delivered by 5:30 by one or more of the team members. Because the meal starts at 6:00, we usually set up the food when we arrive and have it ready to go. The students take care of the rest. We have always been invited to stay for the meal and worship, but it is not expected.

St. Paul’s is signed up to provide the meal on November 12th. Anyone interested in participating in this outreach ministry to our NIU family, please see Jocelyn Prall or Jennie Cummings. Craft Fair and Hobby Show

Just in time to shopping and learning, the Craft and Hobby Show will be held in the Parish Hall on November 24th this year. This annual event displays the craft and hobby interests of the parish. Some parishioners offer items for sale, some display their hobbies, some parishioners offer home made goodies to be sold for local charities. Wherever you fit into

It's November again and KVAL is holding its annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Market at the Old Train Depot, 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore on November 16th, 9AM to 4PM. What a great opportunity to pick up a unique gift for that special someone or for uncle Fred or for yourself. This will be my Cliff Cleland’s last photo show (at least for the foreseeable future) so he hope you will stop by, say hello, and check things out (and to reduce inventory, he is cutting his prices by 50%.).

All Parishioners! Come to the Parish Cafe!

So that we can all continue fellowship and welcome newcomers, please plan on taking coffee or tea (with savories and sweets) on Sundays after church at our Parish Cafe. Many of us are enjoying conversation and connections there. We recall when people have joined us and how we invited them for coffee after church and they joined us there, bringing their enthusiasm and energy and faith. We recall, too, people who bring the blessings of their family life and wonderful food to our Parish Cafe.

This is the place to be. Please plan on coming and staying awhile as often as possible.

Prayer List and Healing Liturgy

If you would like to add someone to be prayed for in The Prayers of the People, you can fill out one of the sheets available on the table near the Narthex and give it to the ushers. Or call or email the Parish Office. Names will appear for six weeks, but can be continued if the need continues. There will be a special healing liturgy on the fourth Sunday of each month as part of the Sunday service. Those who would like to come forward for healing will be prayed for and anointed with oil specially consecrated by the bishop. For more information about St. Paul’s Go to our FaceBook Page or our website, www.stpaulsdekalb.org - to hear the Sermons, and read the Announcements, Schedules, Mars Hill Newsletter, etc. St. Paul's is an affirming and inclusive Christian community! Striving through worship, love and service to welcome all people just as God created you. No matter where you are on your journey of faith, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender expression, sexual orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we! All are welcome, no exceptions!

Household Prayer: Morning

Holy One, I want to see you today in this world with my own eyes. Even though your greatness is unsearchable, today I want to meditate on your wondrous works all around me.

Give me the eyes of faith through which to see you. Renew me, that I may praise you with a new song. Amen.

Household Prayer: Evening

God, thank you for guiding my steps on your paths today. Where my feet may have slipped, forgive me.

You have wondrously shown me your steadfast love through the course of this day. Now let me fall asleep

in the shadow of your wings, for I have seen today that you are my redeemer, the living God. Amen.

A word about the Household Prayers: These prayers are printed on a page of their own so that you can tear them out and use them in your devotions at home. These prayers come from an anthology titled Feasting on the Word, that includes several liturgies for services. The prayers reflect the readings of the week, including special feast days.
