Office Hours: Tuesday – Wednesday, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., Thursday: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

On September 27, the Church celebrated the feast of St. Vincent de Paul, who knew that “God had sent him to bring good news to the poor.” The Gospel today is a great example of saying, “actions speak louder than words.” As you make your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or drop food in the baskets outside of the sanctuary, know that you are putting your faith into action.

Through your gifts in August, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring good news to our neighbors in need by providing food for 288 people (152 children, 136 adults), $ 6,370 for rent, $2,793 for utilities, $630 for furniture, and $150 for auto repairs. Thank You for putting your faith into action!

Neighbors in Need Update: We thought you would like to know the neighbors you have helped truly appreciate the love and generosity extended to them in the name of Jesus. We recently received a $100 money gram from a client who said, “Thank you for being there when I needed you. “

Open Adoration Hours . . . Have two open hours: 4 PM Monday and 3 AM Saturday. Please contact Malina at [email protected] or 281.221.6591. Se necesitan personas que vengan al Santísimo. . . Blessing of Animals Saturday, October 4, 2014 at 10 AM

by Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M. As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice

something odd.

A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets.

This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey.

Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi’s canonization that referred to her little cat!

For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature.

The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love.

No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

Altar flowers (in front of the Ambo) are donated by Ray and Rosalie Daves in honor of the feast day of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower, for special intentions.

(If you are interested in donating flowers for our Altar, for Special Intentions or in Memory of a loved one, please contact LiO Floral Creations at 281.326.1551)

Abortion, In-Vitro, Stem Cell Research, and Cloning…What the Church Teaches

and Why Twice monthly, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, parishioners gather for an interesting and informative presentation on what the Church teaches about a wide variety of different topics. Join us for our next gathering set for Tuesday, October 14, at 7:30 –9:00 PM in Room 10, when we discuss the Fifth Commandment and what it means to respect life. The topic is based on Chapter 29 of the Catholic Catechism for Adults, and the discussion is led by author and theologian, Julie Dienno-Demarest. Attend as often as you like, whether you have a copy of the catechism or not. Next up? The Fifth Commandment continued on Tuesday, October 28: Euthanasia, Physician-Assisted Suicide, and the Right of the Dying to Live.

How does Christ Work thru Sacraments and Liturgy?

This new 10-week class focuses on how we encounter God in the sacraments and what Christ communicates to us through them. Transformed by a new understanding of sacramental grace, we’ll be more capable of living a moral, Christ-centered life. Thursday night sessions begin October 9, from 7-8:30 PM in Room 1. The class will be offered on Wednesday mornings in the Conference Room, beginning October 8, from 9:30-11.

Interested in being Catholic? If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about becoming Catholic, our RCIA program is just the ticket! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process of prayer, reflection, and learning that allows for the continual discernment of God's will. Want more information, contact Heidi, 281.333.3891, Ext. 328 or [email protected].

Upcoming NFP Intro Classes Free introductory sessions for the Creighton Method of NFP are taught one Saturday morning a month, from 10 AM to noon, in Room 1. Upcoming classes are set for October 18, and November 22.

Upcoming at Silver Linings Silver Linings, St. Paul’s 55 and over group, invites new members, men, women and couples, to attend their monthly meetings every 2nd Monday, at 12:30 PM in Room 10. Join us for fun, fellowship and food. Bring a dish to share at the potluck luncheon. Mark your calendars for these upcoming special events. To reserve your place for a trip, contact Anita Lee, 281.333.1233. The Galveston Festival of Lights evening trip is set for November 17th. On Friday, February 20th, we’re touring the Lanier Theological Library and Stone Chapel. Then, on Friday, March 20th, we see the Brenham Bluebonnet Trail and historical district.

Learn about Human Trafficking in Houston Slavery doesn’t occur just in history books; it’s right here in our own community. There are more people enslaved today than at any point in history, and Houston is at the epicenter. Elijah Rising is a local organization working to end human trafficking through prayer, awareness, and intervention. As part of our Respect Life Month, representatives from Elijah Rising are presenting a human trafficking awareness night at St. Paul on Monday, October 13, from 7-8:30 PM in the church. Attendees will learn how to recognize victims of human trafficking and what they can do to help.

Improve your Marriage Without Talking About It!

Talking about your marriage DOESN’T work, say Drs. Patricia Love and Steven Stosny, well-known marriage educators and authors. Their book, How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It, teaches couples how to get closer in ways that don’t require “trying to turn a man into a woman.” Find out more by attending our next Happy Twogether book study, Tuesday, September 30, at 7 PM in the former book store area. Couples do not have to participate together, and free babysitting is provided when you call ahead to make reservations. Contact Heidi Clark for more information: [email protected] or 281.333.3891.

Annulment Information Night If you’d like to better understand what the Church teaches in regard to annulments, how they are processed in this archdiocese, and the steps you need to take to begin the process, plan now to attend our upcoming annulment information night on Wednesday, October 8, from 7-8:30 PM in Founders Hall. Anne Bryant, who directs the archdiocesan tribunal and has a degree in canon law, will be our guest presenter. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for private sessions with certified annulment case sponsors.

Catholic…Divorced…Now What? Session Begins November 10

We are truly divorced only when we let go of our marriage, mourn our loss, and adjust ourselves to our new life. At St. Paul, our Divorce Care Group exists to help one another do just that. This is a Catholic peer-ministry support group that addresses the stress, anger, blame and guilt of divorce and leads participants toward forgiveness, happiness and growth. The 14-session program begins Monday, November 10 and meets weekly into February. Cost is $30; financial assistance is available. Free childcare is provided when reservations are made in advance. The program will be facilitated by Laura Hicks, LMFT with the assistance of others who have already completed the program. Contact Heidi Clark if you are interested in participating: [email protected] or 281.333.3891.

How may I help? ¿Como puedo ayudar?

I really should go out and sell a pack of raffle tickets. Actually I will sell two or three!

Of course I could enter in the Chili Cook-Off competition with our family recipe where I could win the first place!

Maybe it’s better for my family to sell my cultural food on Sunday, October 26, or I could bake a cake for the cake walk.

I know! I will sign up for the 5k Fun Run!

It’s only once a year!

I really should help Oscar and sell Tacos during the Tacos & Salsa night on Saturday 25 and then I will bring my friends to enjoy the Live

I will definitely invite my friends to this day’s event and we all will have a good time!

Let's help #LaunchSPCatholicChurch #OutofthisWorld !
