A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER

One of our parishioners brought to my attention this website and suggestion: www.ACTSXXiX.org

I short, President Abraham Lincoln called the nation to prayer on 24 September 1861 as the nation was divided and entering the civil world. Fr. John Riccardo of Acts XXiX, in a short video reads the proclamation of President Lincoln and calls us to a day of prayer for peace in our nation. Watching the daily news reveals that we are again a nation divided and restless and growing anger. Fr. Riccardo has offer us an opportunity to reflect on our real character and communal personality. We do indeed need to spend time in prayer for justice, peace and unity. I strongly encourage all of us to set aside some time for prayer for these United States of America. A rosary for peace and justice. A meditation period on Psalm 23. A reading and reflection on the letter of James.  A meditation on the Stations of the Cross.

God hears our prayers. God takes care of his daughters and son. Amen.

ADULT MINISTRY AND FAITH FORMATION: BECAUSE OUR FAITH IS TOO RICH AND TOO BEAUTIFUL TO

HAVE EVER LEARNED IT ALL…

Adult faith formation at St Paul the Apostle Catholic Church is centered around the understanding that living “The Way” taught by Jesus Christ is a life-long, evolving journey, involving both effort and decision. To enable adults to explore the faith and deepen their knowledge of God’s Word, we provide many opportunities to come together in a learning environment. As a diverse community with a small parish feel, we know it is important to walk that journey with others and to share what we have learned along the way.

Study Guide from Our Sunday Readings. Wordpress Matthew 20:1-16a

Overview of the Gospel: Since the Gospel readings a couple of weeks ago, we have skipped over Matthew chapter 19, in which Jesus

discusses the indissolubility of marriage, the little children and Jesus, and the story of the Rich Young

Man. This Sunday’s reading contains the first of three

parables in Matthew that concern a vineyard (Matthew 21:28-32 and 21:33-44). The vineyard was a common

Old Testament image for the people of God (Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 5:10; Ezekiel 19:10-14), usually in the

context of their unfaithfulness to him. In this context, this parable is aimed at the unbelieving

Jews of the time who resented the fact that Gentiles (non-Jews) could be allowed into God’s kingdom on

equal status with the Jews (Matthew 21:45). By extension it also applies to Christians and their attitudes

toward late converts to the Faith. Jesus’ point is that both calls are not owed, but are an entirely free gift from God to give to whom he chooses. The reward, which is the same for all, is his gift alone to

give. Questions:

How does the 1st Reading underscore the fact that God works in his own ways beyond our ability to

completely see or understand? In the 2nd Reading, does St. Paul presume to have

God’s plans for his life figured out? What is his overall attitude toward God’s will and providence in his life? Why are identical wages given to both early and late workers? Who is discontented and why (verses 10-12)? Is the landowner’s practice unjust, generous, or both?

Why? Who gets any less from God: the “five o’clock”

converts (Gentiles)? Or those who should have known God since “the first hour” (the Jews)?

If you were one of the first workers hired, how would you have reacted to the landowner?

How do you feel about recent converts getting the same benefits as you in the kingdom?

Would you say you entered God’s kingdom early, in the middle, or late in the day? Do you ever wish you had

entered later in your life, or felt jealous of others who waited until the “eleventh hour”?.

FESTIVAL OCTOBER 24 & 25

The Church is the house and body of

Christ. We have to take care of it. Our festival is the largest fundraiser of the year and a big source of income for our church. Join this community effort to raise funds, allowing our parish to provide both physical and spiritual support to members of our community.

COME PRAY WITH ST. PAUL’S DURING 40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Christians throughout the Houston Metropolitan area are invited to take part in the international 40 Days for Life effort SEPTEMBER 23RD THOUGH NOVEMBER 1ST. In addition to 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion in America, please consider volunteering to pray outside of the Planned Parenthood abortion facility at 4600 Gulf Freeway for one or more hours on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020 (from 6:30am – 3:30pm) the day that St. Paul Catholic Church has taken. “When people are present in prayer at the abortion site, through the Grace of God, hearts are change and lives are saved”. To get more information, or to volunteer to PRAY, please contact:Marilyn Daniel: [email protected]

The challenge in today’s Gospel is to forget how others have behaved toward us and to look to God’s way of loving and forgiving. Our focus must be on God.

Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at 281-333-2509…we want to help!

With the help of the Houston Food Bank and an army of devoted volunteers, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul continues to host Fresh Food Fairs every Saturday morning on church grounds. Hundreds of families benefit from nutritious fruits and vegetable every week.

If you are interested in volunteering, please visit https://www.stpaulcatholic.org/svdp to learn more and sign up for the Saturday(s) of your choice. Please, no volunteers under the age of 18.

A gentle reminder that the Society of St. Vincent de Paul cannot accept donations of fresh foods and produce. Please do not leave perishable food in the church by the chapel doors. Thank you!

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY

Priesthood Sunday is a special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to

reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church. St Paul’s will celebrate

Priesthood Sunday the weekend of October 3 and 4th.

This is a wonderful opportunity to show your appreciation and support to our pastor, FR WENCIL

and FR JIM. Consider writing a card or note of appreciation. Place your cards in the boxes in the

narthex when you come for mass or anytime you are at St Paul’s starting Saturday, September 19. Some

note cards will be available but due to COVID we would prefer if you could bring a card from home. This is a perfect opportunity to have your children

write notes or draw a picture for our priests to thank them for their vocation.
