“I dare you to pick someone to fight me” 1Samuel 17:10

Happy 4th of July; the day we celebrate our freedoms and our

liberation. You all are familiar with the story of David and Goliath.

These were Goliath’s words to Israel. Preceding this text, Samuel

listens to God regarding the appointment of a new leader for Israel.

Even though David was anointed to replace Saul as the king, David

has not yet taken a leadership role.

In this text, Goliath challenges anyone who would fight him, so this

verse is the setting for a battle that has gone on between Israel and

the Philistines for many years, as each tries to retain power and

control over the land. The dramatic defeat of Goliath and the

Philistines sets the stage for David to become king of the people of

Israel.

David, the king apparent, exudes the confidence in God that the others lacked. Instead, David relied on his strength and faith in God. We are each created uniquely in God’s image. We each have our

own set of gifts and talents. As a result, we too are called to become leaders. Leaders in our communities, our families, our world, and certainly our church. As leaders, we are called to stay true to who

God has called us to be, and to act and lead authentically. God is not for or against any one group, or people; but instead stands for justice and peace throughout the world. How are you allowing God to use

your authentic self and act courageously for justice for all?

Proverb

July Newsletter

Please share this with

your congregation.

Grace and peace to you in these days as we are beginning to return

to some semblance of order in these post COVID times.

While much of our ministry at GWCS was curtailed and in some

places non-existent during the pandemic. The good news is that

Elder Care facilities have been slowly opening up for pastors to

visit and for GWCS weekly worship service. We do need more

pastors who are willing to be in the rotation for leading worship. If

you know any piano players to play for these worship services

please encourage them to give us a call to find out what is involved.

The Marathon County Jail is slowly re-opening also. Face masks

are no longer required there. We are looking for four two-person

teams to lead worship or Bible Study at the jail. Volunteers who are

pastors or lay leaders in their churches would lead worship or

conduct Bible study 3 times between 1:00-4:30.

GWCS is looking for someone to take deposits from the GWCS

office to the Co Vantage Credit Union. This person would work

with Marlene, our Administrative Assistant, to create the treasurer’s

report and a yearly budget for GWCS.

And last of all, thank you to all the congregations who have

continued sending their financial support for the ministry of Greater

Wausau Christian Services.
