PAUL’S FAMILY TODAYS GOSPEL At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, "Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon." But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus' disciples came and asked him, "Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us." He said in reply, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, "Lord, help me." He said in reply, "It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs." She said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour. GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Today’s reading from Isaiah comes from what is traditionally called Trito-Isaiah. Written by an anonymous prophet in the line of Isaiah, it addresses the postexilic community back in their homeland. Written with a universal perspective the text anticipates “foreigners who join themselves to the Lord” (v.6). Membership within the community of God’s people is not about bloodlines as much as it is about keeping the commandments, and holding “fast to my covenant” (v.6). They are the ones who will be

covenant” (v.6). They are the ones who will be gathered on God’s “holy mountain” (v.7), Jew and Gentile alike. For God’s house is to be “a house of prayer for all peoples” (v.7). Paul describes himself as “the apostle to the Gentiles” (v.13) in today’s reading. He sees his mission to them as a way of making “my race jealous” (v.14) which will lead to some of them being saved. The conversion of the Gentiles who have “disobeyed God but have now received mercy” (v.30), will serve to lead the Jews who have disobeyed to “receive mercy” (v.31) as well. The disobedience of Jew and Gentile results in the mercy of God extended to all. Jesus’ encounter with the Canaanite woman finds him in foreign territory, among Gentiles. The woman approaches Jesus pleading for help for her daughter who “is tormented by a demon” (v.22). She is persistent in her request even in the face of Jesus’ preliminary refusal, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (v.24). But she reminds him that, “even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters” (v.27). She is not looking to take anything away from the Jews, she is merely looking for help for her daughter. Her perseverance pays off as Jesus heals the daughter in response to her great faith. God’s grace and mercy are intended to all who seek them. For Reflection: How does an “us against them” mentality reflect an attitude contrary to Christianity? Who are those who are overlooked today and how can we as church assist them in experiencing God’s grace and mercy?

Understanding Stewardship

What does it mean to be a good steward?

The Christian steward is a disciple who lives in gratitude by recognizing and embracing God’s gifts and sharing them in love of God and of one’s neighbor. Stewards who are disciples of Jesus live in thankfulness because we recognize that first we have been given the gift of redemption in Jesus, a gift we do not earn or deserve. Jesus freely offers that gift from His great love for us. Stewards recognize that what we have does not absolutely belong to us in the strict sense. Rather it is entrusted to us to be cultivated so that it grows for the greater honor of God. Therefore, our fundamental posture is openness to receive from God and the resolve to share what we have in love of neighbor so that others come to respond more fully to the saving love of God.

Stewardship is based on the spiritual principles of the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus. It is a way of thanking God for all the blessings He has given us by returning to Him a portion of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship can change the spiritual lives of both individuals and the parish as a whole.

Living as a Christian Steward

Time: Giving of time for Christian stewards include time spent in prayer and worship, in sharing our love with family and friends, and in volunteering for Church and community activities that help others and promote justice. Talent: We share our talents by using the unique gifts God has given us to praise the Lord, spread the Gospel message, and help those less fortunate. Treasure: We give our treasure unconditionally (without any expectation in return), in proportion to our giftedness, and as an expression of thanksgiving.

IMPORTANT HEALTH SCREENINGS

EXÁMENES IMPORTANTES DE PREVENCIÓN Stroke Scan Plus will be here at St. Paul’s performing 8 ultrasound screenings on Friday and Saturday, November 3rd and 4th 2017.

They will scan the arteries in the neck, the main artery off the heart, the thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and the arteries in the legs.

These screenings are typically NOT performed at annual check-ups, nor will insurance companies pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collectively, these screenings cost thousands. They will be offering these screenings to you for $155 for all 8 combined. You will also receive an Atrial Fibrillation screening. Insurance is NOT necessary to receive this discount. However, Pre-Registration IS necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1- 866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today.
