Pastor’s Corner August 2015
“He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all
things.) 11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13
until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the
measure of the full stature of Christ. 14 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about
by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15 But speaking
the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the
whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is
working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love.” Ephesians 4:10-16
During June and July, Wanda and I have attended the summer cluster meetings for St. Paul members. We
have really enjoyed spending time with the people as we gathered together in discussion of the church. It’s
a blessing for me to have a spouse and partner in the ministry of God’s church. She loves serving God as
much as all of you do. Thanks for inviting us into your lives and homes.
In the cluster meetings we’ve talked about worship and the possible need to add another service. There’s
been a lot of conversation around the topic of parking, seating, worship times, length of worship services,
Christian education, and Fellowship. All of our conversations have been fruitful and informative. The
members of St. Paul are engaged in listening, learning, and communicating. The cluster meetings have
allowed me to hear how church is changing as it continues to grow the life of the person as well as the life
of our community.
There are a few cluster meetings left for August and I am going to try and hold a few here at the church
for remaining members to gather together on one afternoon and one evening. I look forward to sharing
with you the content of the cluster meetings as a whole on August 23rd after worship in the sanctuary.
As for the worship schedule beginning in the fall, I have a firm time on the first service and I am working
with Christian Education on the 2nd service time. The decisions I am making on the time are to benefit all
the church and continue to build up this body as it grows in love for one another and in Christ Jesus.
When we move to the 2 services this Fall, the first service will be 8:00 A.M. and the second service will
be one of the following times, 10:00 A.M. or 10:30 A.M. I will have the second worship service time
selected for St. Paul by the time we gather on August 23rd. If you haven’t made any of the cluster
meetings, please consider coming to one of the cluster meetings I am holding at the church this month.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
– not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Eph. 2:8-9)

WELCA Summer 2015 The Women of the ELCA at St. Paul would like to invite all members to assist with our Lutheran
World Relief Personal Care Kit Donations for 2015. Last year we assembled 135 Personal Care Kits!
Now we are asking for your assistance once again in gathering the items to be included in each kit.
From now until August 16 we will be collecting these items in the hallway just outside the Fellowship
Hall. Please drop off your items and let us see if we can top last year’s contribution to this valuable
ministry. Our goal is 225 kits. We also accept cash donations to help defray the shipping costs and to
purchase items not donated. Members of WELCA will meet on Tuesday, August 18 at 10:00 AM to
assemble and pack the kits. We will deliver the assembled kits to Daphne Alabama on Saturday,
August 22. Information on items needed will be provided in your weekly bulletin or contact Eleanor
Aspliden 469-4794.
Mark your calendars now!! Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11:00 am is the date for the WELCA
Annual Meeting. This is a wonderful time of fellowship and fun. Our programs are inspirational and
informative. The luncheons are extraordinaire. Please make plans to attend. The program and
luncheon menu will be announced at a later date.
Please be sure to watch for upcoming events and programs on the bulletin board in the Fellowship
Hall.

Social Ministry
God’ Work, Our Hands Day - Sept 12th
Mark your calendar now for Saturday, September 12th from 7:30-11:30!! We will be helping
clean a historic cemetery as we participate in the ELCA’s annual GOD’S WORK, OUR HANDS
Day, and we need EVERYONE’S help. This is a perfect community event to involve our age-
appropriate youth!
There are several cemeteries in Pensacola that do not ‘belong’ to any church or organization, as
churches have either dissolved or moved. MT ZION Cemetery is one of those. It dates back to the
Civil War and covers the years through the Reconstruction and Segregation eras.
We will be working in cooperation with Keep Pensacola Beautiful, the local non-profit organization
that ‘picks up the pieces’ when there is no place to put them. They will provide many of the items
needed, such as the power tools, trash bags, etc. Drinks and snacks will also be available. What they
need are the “hands,” and that’s where we come in.
Although it is only early August, we need to have an accurate count as early as possible of how many
of our members and friends will be participating in order to coordinate this great project. Therefore, a
signup sheet is on the Social Ministries bulletin board, right across from the library.
Thank you all in advance for your willingness to help keep Pensacola beautiful. This project will take a
lot of work, but it will be more than worth it to see the wonderful outcome!
Many books were processed for the Prison Book Ministry at Open Books within the last couple
months. Bob and Faye Robinson, Marjorie Kellams, Bev Julien, Gloria Seiler, Cheryl Poister, and
Barbara Lenn volunteered at this work project.
Waterfront Mission was very pleased to receive our overflowing box of toiletries which Don Lenn
delivered this past month. Sarah Leviege delivered the Manna Food Bank donations, which totaled
569 lbs. St. Paul’s response to our ‘2nd Sunday Mission’ event has been outstanding. Thank you to
everyone who has contributed, and please remember there is a sign-up sheet on the Social ministries
table (across from the library) for food delivery to Manna after our Mission Sunday collection.
During August, we will all be supporting the Women of the ELCA’s HEALTH KIT drive. The
collection box is outside the Fellowship doors.

Are you an “old” member and wonder who a newer member is? Or, if you are a newer member, do
you want to know the name of someone? Well, an answer to those questions may be on the bulletin
board next to the Library. It’s not yet time for a new pictorial directory, so in the meantime there are
copies of the existing pictorial directory, and a few pictures that were in the newsletters.
However, there are many members missing......are you one of those? If so there is an envelope on the
bulletin board for you to leave a snapshot or a copy of any picture, with your name(s) on the back. If
you don’t have a picture to add to the board, ask Patty Paulson or Barbara Lenn to snap a picture of
you after church service. (And if you don’t know who they are, you can find their picture on the
board).
FELLOWSHIP
Hospitality Committee will be hosting our annual hot
dog and ice cream social on August 16th. Everyone
is invited, please plan to join us for this fun event.
Our coffee host volunteer list is looking good, thanks
to everyone who has signed up. There are many
opportunities to host “coffee time”, so if you have not
shared this joy, please consider volunteering. There
are cakes and cookies available for you to serve. You
will find these items in the freezer. If you wish to
bake, we suggest items that may be handled easily
with a beverage size napkin.
Our committee is excited about some changes that are
happening. We will now have two Kitchen Managers,
they are Brenda Ekstrom and Faye Robinson. We
will be keeping the kitchen stocked and purchasing
supplies for all events. In addition, we have two
committee sponsors per month to assist our coffee
host each Sunday. Your sponsors for the month of
August are Kim McCormick and Karen Kaminska.
As always it is a JOY and HONOR to serve in
GOD”S house!
EVANGELISM

ST. PAUL'S SCRAPBOOK We need your help! We have been through many things; every time, we come back stronger and these are the things that have made us the
wonderful church that we are. We want to record these so present and future members will see how we accomplished
God’s work even in good and challenging times. St. Paul's members have been involved in many projects and events; for
example, feeding the hungry, Angle Tree, Toys for Tots, Trunk and Treat, Easter Egg Hunts, WELCA events, Spot, Youth,
Anniversary parties, Installation of New Ministers just to name a few. We need pictures of these events, special bulletins,
annual reports and any other records related to St. Paul's history.
Please check those boxes that are under the bed, in the attic or closet for pictures or documents concerning St. Paul. On
the back of the pictures, write the name of the event, approximate date and names of individuals, if possible. Place the
items in an envelope with your name and phone number on the outside and leave them at the church office. Also mark
the outside of the envelope with the word "Scrapbook". After we copy the items, they will be returned to you.
We need your help to make this a complete history of our wonderful church and people. After it is completed, the
Scrapbook will be placed in the library for everyone’s enjoyment.
REMEMBER this is your history and it can only be accomplished with your help.
Library
The library has become high tech!

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, The hard but undeniable fact of deeply embedded racism in American society has come to the fore in painful ways this past year through high-profile occurrences of racial discrimination, hatred and violence – including racially motivated killings. As Lutheran Christians, what should be our response and witness? As members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, how are we called to confront the sin of racism? We need to talk and we need to listen, but we also need to act. As one important step in this process, I invite you to join me and William B. Horne II, an ELCA lay leader and member of the ELCA Church Council, for a live webcast conversation on the complexity and implications of racism on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. (CDT). Through our church’s social statement – “Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity, and Culture” – the ELCA collectively has expressed its calling to confront racism and advocate for justice and fairness for all people. You can read this social statement here. In addition, I have made several public statements on behalf of the church recently on this subject. Those statements are available here. God’s intention for all humanity is that we see the intrinsic worth, dignity and value of all people. Racism undermines the promise of community and fractures authentic relationships with one another. As Christians, though, we live in the conviction that the church has been gathered together in the joyful freedom of the reign of God announced by and embodied in Jesus. That reign has not come in its fullness, but the message of God’s “yes” to the world breaks down all dividing walls as we live into that promise. I urge you to deepen your involvement in and commitment to this important work to which we all are called. I believe our live webcast on this topic on Aug. 6 is one useful way for us to pursue this together, and I hope you will view and take part in it. You may read more about this webcast at www.ELCA.org/webcast, where a link to the live webcast will be embedded. A live stream also will be available at www.Facebook.com/Lutherans. Twitter hashtag is#ELCAConfrontRacism. If you would like to submit a question to be considered during the live webcast, please send it to [email protected] and provide your name and your congregation’s name, city and state. Join me for this important conversation. Your Sister in Christ,
