Weekly

Message

stewardship

The Christian vocation is essentially a call to be a disciple of Jesus. Stewardship is part of that call. Each of us must discern, accept, and live out joyfully and generously the commitments, responsibilities, and roles to which God calls us. Jesus not only calls people to him but also forms them and sends them out in his service. Jesus’ call is urgent. He does not tell people to fol-low Him at sometime in the future but here and now.

Being a disciple of Christ naturally leads into Stewardship. These linked realities, discipleship and stewardship, make up the fabric of a Christian life rooted in our Lord. We recognize that everything we have is a gift from God, to be used for the purpose of sharing those gifts with others.

A true sense of Stewardship involves giving from our first fruits. So often, the tendency can be to give from what we have left over. When we understand Stewardship, then it is easy to see the abundance of gifts we and others have to offer. Giving from that abundance, rather than from a sense of “this is all I have left to give” becomes a natural part of our lives.

This is why Stewardship is a conversion of the heart. It is a way of life. Stewardship will change us. It is very rewarding and joyful. However, when we truly place our trust in the Lord and share our gifts out of the pure joy of sharing; then the old saying rings true, “you will receive more than you give.”

Prayer is the cornerstone of stewardship, part of the Time, in Time, Talent and Treasure. Only when we spend time with God in prayer, are we spiritually prepared to offer ourselves in service to others. Consequently, the first step we must take on the path to being good stewards is prayer. Therefore, I have asked all of our participants in Eucharistic Adoration to pray every day for all of us here at St. John’s so that our Steward-ship is always bountiful.

You shall take some of the first fruits of the various products of the soil which you harvest from the land which the Lord, your God, gives you, and putting them in a basket, you shall go the

place which the Lord, your God, chooses for the dwelling place of his name. There you shall go to the priest in the office at that

time and say to him, “today I acknowledge to the Lord, my God, that I have indeed come into the land which he swore to our fa-thers he would give us.” …. Therefore, I have now brought you

the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given me.” And having set them before the Lord, your God, you

shall bow down in his presence. (Deut. 26:2-5, 10)

Endowment and Matching Funds: Did you know that St. Paul

Parish has an Endowment fund established for the future of this parish? It is such a blessing to give to those generations after us and also receive the blessings from those who cared for this parish before us. Please keep St. Paul Parish in mind for your Estate planning. Also, if your company has a matching funds program, your gift of stewardship can be matched! Contact Sherri Meyer in the business office for more details on either opportunity.

Let us remember today all those who labored to obtain for us the right to work in a safe environment with decent wages.

Let us pray…

Lord of work and play, we pray to you today. You worked for six days,

creating all that we see and sense around us. On the seventh day you rested

and saw that everything you had made was good. Today on our national day of rest from labor,

we thank you for the gift of leisure, and remember all who have gone before us,

working hard, long hours without break and good pay so that we can appreciate the gifts of family and friends

and enjoy safety and prosperity in the work of our hands. Amen.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question: As we celebrate Labor Day, can you tell me about Catholic teaching regarding labor?

Answer: One of the most important principles of Catholic social teaching is the dignity of work and the rights of workers. Four encyclicals address this foundational social teaching: "Rerum Novarum" (1891) by Leo XIII, "Quadragesimo Anno" (1931) by Pius XI, "Laborem Exercens" (1981), "Centesimus Annus" (1991) by John Paul II. They address both the theology and dignity of work. In Genesis, God takes the initiative in creating the world, calling forth human beings to be faithful stewards of creation. From this perspective, work can be spiritually understood in terms of sharing in God's ongoing activity to build, create, and transform the world. Human beings are co-creators with God. This vocation demands self-discipline.

Besides an exercise in self-discipline, work is also the means by which we develop and fulfill ourselves. In work, we shape the world and our environment. Through work, we also shape ourselves. Pope John Paul II summarized this point in "Laborem Exercens," "The value of human work is not primarily the kind of work being done but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person" (#6). Labor Day offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on how we view work in light of our Catholic social teaching.

PARISH OFFICE IS CLOSED ON LABOR DAY.

St. Paul Community Carnival was a success! Thank you to every-one that attended the carnival. The weather was beautiful, children had fun, parents were “networking” and the food was delicious. I need to thank our volunteers: Knights of Columbus, Kohl’s, St Paul’s teachers, staff, parishioners and parents. A special thank you to our vendors: Culver’s, Brody’s Italian Ice, Lay’s and Fun Events, Inc. I not only witnessed an amazing day of community building, I also experienced it first-hand.

ST PAUL SCHOOL NEWS

WORK & PRAY Gather September 18, at 9:00am in the Family Rm. If you or someone you know would find comfort in a prayer shawl whether at home, in the hospital or nursing home, please contact the parish office so we can provide you with one. We accept donated materials. Join us anytime.

For the Kids Sharing the Gospel Sometimes it's hard to give of your time, or your toys, or even to share your friends. Sometimes you want to be selfish and keep everything for yourself. This is not what Jesus did. He kept sharing God's love all the time. He shared so much that he even gave his life for us by dying on the cross. Jesus wants us to share like he did, to give of ourselves even when we want to be selfish. Prayer Heavenly Father, give me strength to share your love.

HUMAN CONCERNS

You are Invited! St. Michael Church, our sister parish in Milwaukee, would like to

invite you to their annual St. Michael’s Feast Day Mass and celebration. This event should be very special as they are getting more refugees from Myanmar. Many of these young families will be experiencing the wonderful multi-cultural Catholic community of St. Michael’s for the first time. The mass and great food afterward should be any event people won’t want to miss. The celebration takes place on September 10th at 9am. Please come and celebrate with us.

Inquiries Welcome

You may have a friend or family member who has never been baptized, or was baptized in another Christian faith. An ac-quaintance or coworker may have asked you questions about the Catholic Church. Someone may indicate to you they are searching for a sense of community, or a desire to hear more of the Good News of Jesus, the Gospel. They are all cordially invited to inquire about the Catholic Christian faith by attend-ing an open informational meeting in early September, look for the date and time. This is their opportunity to ask questions about “things Catholic” such as what do Catholics believe and what do Catholics do. This is their opportunity to raise the issues that are on their minds or in their hearts. This is their chance to get information with no commitment!

Those who have never been baptized can investigate what it means to be Christian. Those baptized in another Christian tradition can explore the process to come into full communion with the Catholic Church. Those baptized Catholic as infants but not raised Catholic can learn about being confirmed and receiving the Eucharist. Or maybe you’re Catholic but have not been confirmed. The first step begins with you, today, as you invite your family members, friends, co-workers, or others to explore what it means to be Catholic. Contact Mary Kral in the parish office for more information.

Dynamic Men's Group Wednesdays, beginning September 13, men can choose to be part of the 6-7am group in the cafeteria or the 7-8pm group in the Family Room. With the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, our Dynamic Men's Group wants to help all men of the parish get their families to HEAVEN. This gathering of men offers fellow-ship, food, and faith sharing along with inspirational faith-based material. If you'd like to learn more, please feel free to attend the first couple of sessions and bring a friend. Please call Tim Weske at 262-968-9170 with any questions.

St. Bruno Turkey Dinner October 1st

11am to 5pm TO GO Dinners $11.00 with convenient drive thru service.

Resisting Happiness How do YOU encounter resistance to happiness in your life? Are you as happy as you could be? Pick that book up by Matthew Kelly and read or re-read it! This little book has so many down to earth nuggets:

The JOY of a holy life: the concept that God calls EVERY man and woman to!

Thriving or just surviving? When we are spiritually healthy we tend to be focused, invigorated, patient, and generous. When we aren’t healthy spiritually we tend to be irritable, restless, and discontented.

Mediocrity seeks comfort. Resistance encourages us to take it easy and settle for mediocrity.

Every moment is a chance to turn it all around.

The outer life is an overflow of the inner life: establish a daily habit of prayer.

Let’s get together at St Paul’s after 9am mass on 9/10 or at St Bruno’s before 10:30 mass on 9/24 to talk about this book.
