PRAYER Archdiocesan Theme: ?Be not Afraid? Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College Fourth Sunday of Lent Year B In the Gospel for the fourth week of Lent, (John 3:14-21), Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life. The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday because of its focus on God?s grace. Laetare is a Latin word that means ?rejoice.? The name comes from a Scripture verse from the book of Isaiah, ?Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow.? This reminds us that even as we observe our Lenten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipation of the joy of Easter. This gospel stresses the importance of faith and is most consoling. All who believe in Jesus, who died and rose for us, will have eternal life. ?God loved the world so much that God gave the Son so that we may believe and have eternal life? (John 3:16). God sent his Son into the world so that it might be saved, not to condemn it. Jesus is the key to salvation. All the blessings we long for are contained in Christ. As humans we are prone to error and sin. But Jesus? mercy and goodness towards us always rescues us. Belief in Jesus is light ? a light that illumines us and all around us. PRAYER Archdiocesan Them e: ?Be not Af raid?

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College

Four t h Sunday of Lent Year B

In the Gospel for the fourth week of Lent, (John 3:14-21), Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man will be raised up so that those who believe in him will have eternal life.

The fourth Sunday of Lent is sometimes called Laetare Sunday because of its focus on God?s grace. Laetare is a Latin word that means ?rejoice.? The name comes from a Scripture verse from the book of Isaiah, ?Rejoice, O

Jerusalem, and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow.?

This is the Good News; it is the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives.

Exem pt ion f rom School At t endance

Thank you for your ongoing support in complying with NSW legislation around compulsory school attendance until students turn 17. If a parent/carer considers that it is in the child?s best interests to be exempted from the legal requirement to attend school for any length of time, then the parent applies to the Principal for an exemption by completing an Application for Exemption from Attendance at School form, available on our website or from the student office. This covers all known absences including family holidays during school terms and sporting commitments, eg surf lifesaving carnivals and Oztag tournaments. Please note that the application for leave should be submitted at least four weeks in advance of the requested leave period. Exemptions from school attendance cannot be granted retrospectively. Students who travel overseas during school term are required to show their Certificate of Exemption as they proceed through Customs.

Year 12 SOR2 Judaism Excursion

On Monday 12 March, Year 12 SOR2 along with Mr Donohue andMrs Hughes attended the Sydney Jewish Museum for a HSC Judaism lecture by Sandy Hollis. Sandy focused on the core components of Jewish Marriage, Jewish bioethics and the influence of the Jewish scholar Moses Maimonides. It was an informative and insightful day for all, and the students behaviour was exemplary.

St Vincent de Paul Night Pat rol

Thank you to all families who made contributions of food over the last few weeks for Night Patrol. Our staff went out last Friday night to support those in need. Your donations were well received by the clients of Night Patrol and your support is greatly appreciated by the College. Thanks to Mrs Shelley Bates, Mr David Di Donato, Mr Enda Forde, Miss Rebecca Hines, Mrs Lauren Smith and Miss Cassandra Hall for giving up their time on Friday night.

Car it as Project Com passion Appeal

Thank you to all PC classes for a great start to Project Compassion. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday during Lent, students are given an opportunity to donate money to Project Compassion. Students are encouraged during this time to think about those who are less fortunate. Mrs Lauren Smith organised a guest speaker last week, former Souths NRL Coach, Michael Maguire, who visited Africa with Caritas to see how the money raised for Project Compassion is used. He spoke of the life changing testimonies of the people we support, with our money providing them with access to clean drinking water - something we take for granted. Please encourage the students to show their support by continuing to give generously. Mr Declan Donohue, Director of Religious Education

Classroom Refurbishm ent s

During the Christmas break we refurbished six classrooms with an aim to provide flexible collaborative spaces which facilitate, encourage and enable active learning.

Each room was installed with high quality audio visual equipment. The rooms were painted, recarpeted and fitted with new whiteboards. Additionally, we selected new furniture which works in multiple configurations to meet the needs of the class.

Teachers and students alike are enjoying the new spaces. Being able to rearrange furniture or break out in groups at whiteboard stations facilitates small group discussions and improves the learning environment.

We will be continuing the refurbishment program into 2018 to create further opportunities for innovative teaching and learning experiences at St Patrick's College.

Peer Tut or ing

On Wednesday afternoon Peer Tutoring started for another year in the library. We had 46 Junior students and 18 Seniors attend this week.

This year students are working in their House Groups. It is a fantastic way for the students to make positive connections and really get to know the Senior students from their House.

Some of the main areas students were getting help with this week was practising operations with integers, structuring and planning narratives and writing a bibliography properly. It was fantastic to see so many students prepared with questions and really engaged in the afternoon.

If there are any other Year 7 or Year 8 students interested in the program, feel free to see me for a permission note. Looking forward to week 2!

Miss Rebecca Hines, Peer Tutoring Coordinator

Peer Suppor t

The focus of this week?s session was wellbeing. Students discussed the need to enhance their wellbeing so they are mentally and emotionally fit to face any obstacles and setbacks they encounter.

They considered the positive effects of elements such as eating well, getting sufficient sleep and regular exercise.

Achievements are redefined as the skills and attitudes learned in reaching a set goal rather than the final product.

Students are encouraged to identify their strengths. These strengths could be their achievements, activities they enjoy, their aspirations and the opportunities and people they have to support them.

Please encourage your child by praising the effort rather than result. For example, you could say something like ?I?m really proud of you, you worked hard to practise for this test, you even asked your teacher for help.?

Miss Rebecca Hines, Peer Support Leader

Year 12 Past oral Care

During the Pastoral Care Lesson on 22 February, Year 12 students watched the performance ?Six Decades Of Bullying?. The play was based on three true stories involving three different forms of communicating: texting, social networking and face to face.

The first story was about two teenage boys, the second was of a group of teenage girls and the third - the author 's own experience - about being bullied at a central Queensland high school in 1968.

Students saw that while the means by which bullies today taunt their victims with cyber-bullying are different from the stand and abuse, and physical assaults of the late 1960's, the effect on the victims is much the same.

The stories targeted all aspects of bullying in an engaging manner, and were relevant. The play was funny and fast paced but did not detract from the seriousness of the issue.

The play showed how negatives can be turned into positives and how the powerless can become successful in life.

World Youth Day 2019 is fast approaching, and confirmation of interest forms are due to Mrs Lauren Smith by 26 March . The College has chosen to support the Peru: Saint s of Lim a Pilgr im age. Students interested in attending will need to collect forms from Mrs Smith and return them as soon as possible to ensure a spot on the pilgrimage is reserved for them. There will be a WYD preparation event taking place on Wednesday21 March, and is open to all students interested in WYD Panama. After this event, students still have the option of submitting confirmation of interest forms. For more details or any questions, please contact Mrs Lauren Smith at the College.

In the book of Matthew, Chapter 17, Verse 20 displays to us the courage and belief God wishes us all to display. A mustard seed in comparison to a mountain is so very small, and can seem so very unimportant. However, it is through such a powerful metaphor that we can learn so much.

Having faith the size of a mustard seed in comparison to a mountain seems impossible to utilise. It is so easy in our very busy lives, whether it is school, sport, dancing, homework or family life, to feel so powerless, to feel like your faith is the size of a mustard seed when you need to move a mountain. This passage is God?s direct way of speaking to us, telling of the wonders that litt le bit of faith the size of a mustard seed can do. If we have the smallest bit of faith in God, no matter what size challenge we face, we will be able to achieve. If we believe and have courage, we can do it. This passage especially resonates with me at the moment with the amount of schoolwork and extracurricular duties I have to attend. Tasks can be so overwhelming but if I have faith, nothing will be impossible to overcome.

This passage is so important as I believe God is providing us with a compass to help make life more fulfilling. Give everything a go, and try your best, because if you try and have faith you can do it.

The interpretation of this quote is what resonates with me most, but can have so many powerful meanings and underlying messages. Conclusively, it is important to listen to God and have faith in him, and he will allow us to move mountains.

Year 11 Gold Duke of Edinburgh Pract ice Advent urous Journey

On 27 February 2018, we began the Gold Practice Exploration AJ. This Exploration consisted of surveying selected areas of the ACT and Monaro Districts for fauna, flora, geology, geography and human impact.

Upon arrival at the Canberra Space Centre, we were given a presentation by scientist Dr McDonnell who also led our tour throughout this amazing joint NASA/CSIRO space complex. Our first stop on tour was beneath the incredible 35m diameter satellite dish used to relay and receive messages from the various unmanned probes in orbit around our solar system. We were amazed to see three of such including the 4000 ton, 100m diameter parabolic dish that was currently receiving maintenance, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. As we continued throughout the interior of the Space Centre we learned that the Voyager 1 has a further 31000 years of travelling left in it 's nuclear fueled engine. During our fifteen minutes of free time, we discovered the absolutely vile foods which the first astronauts had to eat whilst in space - the various packet mushed meals that were designed to provide all vitamins and minerals which the astronauts needed for their journeys in orbit around the Earth, during the US Mercury and Gemini missions and for the Apollo Lunar landings.

After our visit to the Canberra Space Centre, we proceeded by bus to the Snowy Hydro Centre in Cooma. Even though it was only a short visit, it was still incredibly informative and gave us an insight into the building and the workings of the huge Snowy Mountains Scheme, built between 1949 and 1974, mainly by European migrant workers. The most interesting facts were that reservoirs, dams, pipes, tunnels and power stations were built to supply water for irrigation in NSW, Victoria and South Australia as well as hydroelectric power generation. Today, due to the schemes shear size and building costs, it would not be able to be built. The next stop was basecamp at Jindabyne. Click here for more of the Duke report.
