Each week the children are assessed in class on a range of 25 stage-appropriate basic skills questions. Following on from this assessment, later in the week each class holds a ‘Big Maths’ lesson where the children split into small groups and work with an adult on their basic skills strengths and errors. In addition to the class teacher teaching a group during ‘Big Maths’, Teaching Assistants and Mrs Orwin and Miss Lennon work with all classes to ensure small group focused work can take place. At the end of each half term each child will complete a half term assessment which clearly indicates if a child is working at the expected standard for their age, working towards the expected standard or working above the expected standard and highlights strengths and gaps in learning. These gaps form targets for children and informs the teacher’s planning. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and track their weekly progress throughout the year. The weekly test results fall into three colour brackets: Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point, Yellow = things are really moving, Green = You are flying!!! Yellow = things are really moving, Green = You are flying!!! Yellow = things are really moving, Green = You are flying!!! Yellow = things are really moving, Green = You are flying!!! This helps with our tracking as dots can convert to dashes and dashes can convert to crosses! The children understand this marking of ‘Big Maths’, just make sure parents you do too when you are looking at your child’s ‘Big Maths’ work...don’t panic if you see lots of crosses...it means they have got it right!!! The children love it and will be keen to share their work with you. Each child receives their own personal folder which they will keep in their book bags and these can go home each night but must come back to school the next day. ‘Big Maths’ times can change each week and if a child doesn't have their folder they will miss out. Take a look in your child’s Big Maths folder and see what they are working on - the prompt sheets show you the topics the children are covering. If you have the time, help your child on one or two of their errors on their basic skills work. Remember your child will score low at the start of the year and build up their scores as they learn more in their Maths lessons. Working with your child will help them make progress and help us raise standards. If you would like to find out more about our ‘Big Maths’ please do not hesitate to contact Miss Lennon, your child’s Class Teacher or Mrs Neiland our Mathematics Coordinator, we are always happy to help. In our drive to raise standards in mathematics, we use a scheme called Assertive Mentoring ‘Big

Maths’ in Year 2 to Year 6.

Each week the children are assessed in class on a range of 25 stage-appropriate basic skills

questions. Following on from this assessment, later in the week each class holds a ‘Big Maths’ lesson

where the children split into small groups and work with an adult on their basic skills strengths and

a child is working at the expected standard for their age, working towards the expected standard or

working above the expected standard and highlights strengths and gaps in learning. These gaps form

targets for children and informs the teacher’s planning.

Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and track their weekly progress

throughout the year. The weekly test results fall into three colour brackets: Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point, Red = a good starting point,
