Description (Kindly prepared by the vendors)

The building, known as St. Nicholas Hall and also the Verger’s House, is a landmark building in Hertford, situated next to St Andrew’s Church on one side and a car park on the other which backs on to the Castle Hall and it’s grounds. For the last 50 years the building has been an Antiques shop known as Beckwith & Son, much photographed and on the tourist trail. The building consists of three parts which are fully connected, a covered yard and an open area to the side which has vehicle access.

The Verger’s House is a 15th century jettied half timbered building on three floors with a cellar, and fireplaces on each level and occupied as a residence prior to it’s restoration in the 1960’s. The top floor is a self contained one bedroomed flat with sitting room, bathroom , kitchen and separate toilet.

Attached is St Nicholas Hall, formerly a church hall built in 1892 and partly funded by residents in Hertford Connecticut. The hall follows a design for a medieval aisled hall with a stage and sub basement below with natural light at the south end; subsequently altered in the late 1960’s to accommodate a first floor, providing an attractive and unusual space. A new staircase linking the medieval front with the first floor church hall was built in English oak in 2008/9. There is under floor heating to the ground floor run by a gas fired Rayburn.

The third part of the building is connected by a stone staircase serving the back of the stage and it’s sub-basement room (with natural light). The Schoolroom has pleasing proportions, open to the roof, again with good natural light. A separate toilet block for girls and boys at the end of the covered yard no longer exists.

There are doorways to all three parts of the building on both sides. Vehicular access is available to both sides of the property, although parking is only available on one side.
