TRANSCRIPT
From the Principal Dear Parents
Mother’s Day Liturgy
Tomorrow our Mother’s Day Liturgy will take place in the church commencing at 10.15 am followed by morning tea provided by the
P&F Committee and volunteers. All mothers and grandmothers are most welcome to attend. We wish all mothers a very happy
Mother’s Day on Sunday 14 May.
Attendance
Whether absences are excused or unexcused, research shows that they hurt student achievement more than parents might guess. Students with a history of poor attendance are more likely struggle at school and tend to fall behind their peers in reading. By middle and high school, they also are more likely to fail courses. It’s no surprise that missing a lot of school hurts achievement. But new research shows that even just one or two absences a month make a big difference.
Uniform
The children return to school on Monday 15 May in their full winter uniform. As you would know we have a new pale blue sports tracksuit. This new sport tracksuit has a transition period of 18 months. Therefore if the old navy track pants and navy school jacket fit your child, they may wear them for the next 18 months. However, the new pale blue track suit must be worn as a complete set. There is also a new long sleeve polo shirt that can be worn in winter. In brief, the complete old sports uniform or the complete new track suit. Thank you for your support.
Serving a healthy family media diet
Many parents struggle with exactly how much screen time is okay for their children. Is a half-hour TV show okay but a full-length movie bad? How much gaming should you allow when your children also use their computer for homework? Does Wikipedia count as reading? And when does a passion for, say, video games become problematic? The truth is, there is no magic formula. And just as every family differs in what they eat, when they eat and what they like, a healthy media diet is different for every family. The key is making sure that the things that are important to your family are fairly balanced over the long term.
A healthy media diet balances activities (games, social media, TV), time (Fifteen minutes? Three hours?) and choices (YouTube, Minecraft, “Star Wars”) with offline activities (sports, face-to-face conversations, hobbies).
Find balance. Instead of counting daily screen-time minutes, aim for a balance throughout the week. Help your children
plan a week that includes things they have to do and things they like to do, such as schoolwork, activities, chores, reading, family time and TV or gaming. Decide on limits and behaviour using a family media agreement.
Walk the walk. Put your own devices away while driving, at mealtimes and during important conversations. Children learn
habits from the adults around them.
Talk about it. Ask questions about their favourite games, shows and characters. Discuss ideas and issues they read about
or learn about through a TV show or a game. This is an opportunity for bonding, learning and sharing your values.
Create tech-free zones. Set rules that fit your family, such as no devices during dinner, no social media during
homework or all screens off before bedtime. Some families have a central spot for charging and all devices must remain there after bedtime.
Check ratings. Choose age-appropriate, high-quality media and technology for your children.
Reflection
Jan Chrouchin, a Baptist Minister, has these thoughts to share in her “Mother’s Day Creed”
“I Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, who was born of the promise to a virgin named Mary.
I believe in the love Mary gave her Son that caused her too follow him in his ministry and stand by his cross as he died.
I believe in the love of all mothers and its importance in the lives of the children they bear.
It is stronger than steel, softer than down, and more resilient than a green sapling on a hillside.
It closes wounds, melts disappointments, and enables the weakest child to stand tall in the fields of adversity.
Thank God for mothers and thank mothers for helping us to understand an all-loving God.”

Religious Education
May is the month of Mary
May is traditionally the month of Mary. Mary is our spiritual mother.
Mary has many names: Queen of Peace, Star of the Sea, Mother
of God, Our Lady help of Christians, Mary, a woman of Faith—
these are just some of them. No matter her name, she is always
ready to intercede on our behalf. What loving son can refuse his
mother’s requests? Knowing that, we should feel confident to bring
our petitions to Mary, knowing that she will make the requests to
her Son, Jesus.
This month, some classes are reciting a decade of the Rosary each
day, because Mary has asked us to pray the Rosary to bring us to
true peace.
“Oh Mary, we ask to pray for us.”
Enrolment Mass Ceremonies for Sacrament of Penance/
Reconciliation 2017
As the first step in your child’s preparation for the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, enrolment ceremonies will be held on Saturday
13 May 13 at 5.30 pm and Sunday 14 May at 8 am, 10 am and
6 pm. During this time, the Community will welcome the children
and pray for them and their families during this special preparation
period plus receiving Father’s blessings. For further queries please
contact Jenny Hayek on 9639 0598.
Mrs Maureen Gleeson, Assistant Religious Education Co-ordinator

We have once again been contacted regarding parents blocking the

driveway.
Please ensure that you do not block the driveway of residents’
homes.
We have been advised that this area will be under surveillance and
fines apply.
School Fees School fees have been sent out to families for Term 2. If
you have not received your school fee statement or if you
have any questions you need to ask, please contact Tanya
Eastaway, Finance Officer on 9639 0518.
Back path Please ensure that you walk to the back path to collect your
children in the afternoon, particularly children in the younger
grades.
Children in younger grades without a sibling need to be col-
lected by their parents at the back gate. Any child not picked
up by a parent is brought back to Slow and Go.
For the consideration of our neighbours, please move
out of the area as soon as possible and ensure that your
children are not running through lawns or playing in the

Star corner Over the Easter long weekend, Cooper Crawford, Mitchell Essex (both in Year 4) and Ashton Crawford (Year 2) competed for Cumberland Nepean in the NSW U/11 T-ball Championships. All boys played exceptionally well, with the team coming 5
th overall.
They all received a trophy from St Michael's Softball Club
at the recent presentation night in recognition of their rep-
resentative efforts. At the same presentation, Cooper was
also awarded the T-Ball Encouragement Award and a
medal recognizing his 5 years of service to the Club – the
youngest player to ever achieve this milestone.
Complaints and grievances
Parents must not to approach other children if there has been an issue at school. School issues should always be left to
the school to manage. Having a parent approach another parent’s child can be very intimidating and detrimental to the
child. We remind parents of the procedure for dealing with complaints and grievances below.
We also take this opportunity to remind parents that children are not to bring items that are valuable to the children to school
(such as ooshies, toys, popular cards). There is always a risk when bringing these items to school that they could be lost,
damaged or taken by someone. If children bring items valuable to them to school, the school can only go so far in terms of trying
to find items that are lost or stolen. It is in the best interests of the child not to bring these valuable items to school. It is each
child’s responsibility to look after their own items.
Complaints and Grievances Policy At St Michael’s Primary School, Baulkham Hills, the dignity of each individual is valued and the rights and beliefs of all members of the community are respected. St Michael’s follows the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta Complaint
Handling Policy and Procedures which is available from the school office and on the school website.
However, from time to time concerns may arise between different groups within the school community. At St Michael’s
we aim to attempt resolution as soon as any concerns arise.
Procedural Fairness
We endeavour to ensure that our student behaviour procedures and strategies allow for procedural fairness. We believe that
procedural fairness is a basic right of all when dealing with school authorities. We apply the “right to an unbiased decision” and
the “hearing rule”.
The “right to an unbiased decision” includes the right to:
impartiality in an investigation and decision making
an absence of bias by a decision-maker
The “hearing rule” includes the right of the student against whom an allegation has been made to:
know the allegations related to a specific matter and any other information which will be taken into account in
considering the matter
know the process by which the matter will be considered
respond to the allegations
know how to repair relationships and to “make things right”
know how to seek a review of the decision made in response to the allegations.
In order to ensure procedural fairness, school staff need to be allowed to investigate and respond to matters in an appropriate manner. Parents must always communicate directly with the staff of the school when they have concerns about student behaviour, rather than approach individual students or parents with their concerns
Parents
Complaints or grievances pertaining to classroom issues or that relate to other children are to be dealt with by school personnel. It is not appropriate for parents to approach other children or other parents while on school premises to resolve issues.
The recommended procedure to be followed by parents is:
The first point of contact is the child’s class teacher. An appointment with the teacher should be made via the
school office or directly with the teacher.
If parents are not satisfied with the solutions offered or believe they have not been given a fair hearing, they are
encouraged to make an appointment with either the Principal or Assistant Principal, to discuss the issue further.
Parents are reminded that there are always two sides to every story and while it is important to listen to their own
child, it is also just as important not to draw conclusions or make accusations until all the facts are known.
Parents may also contact Catholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta (CEDP) for further discussion.
All parties should aim to work towards a mutually agreeable solution to the grievance.
Students
The recommended procedure for students who have complaints or grievances is:
If and when issues arise in the classroom, students are encouraged to speak to the class teacher in order to seek
assistance in finding a resolution.
Students encountering problems on the playground are asked to talk to the staff member on duty, who will then if
necessary refer it to the class teacher or one of the school’s Leadership team.
Students may also speak to any other staff member regarding any issues.
Appeal A person who is not satisfied the matter has been resolved appropriately may choose to appeal to the Principal of the school if the Principal has not been involved in investigating or examining the complaint, or is not the person named as the source of the grievance / complaint.
Alternatively an appeal may be made to the Head of School Services for the school who may be contacted at the CEDP.
