During the pregnancy of her second child, she sank to her lowest point. “I thought to myself, ‘this is the end of the world; this is the end of me’,” she says. “I just didn’t know where to get help.” Luckily, Jacinta was able to seek the help of the Mercy Sisters and enter their Mercy Works program. This began a process of healing for Jacinta. Whilst there, she met Steven Dude, who is a community leader. Like Jacinta, Steven was subjected to abuse and violent outbursts throughout

CATHOLIC MISSIONS: WORLD MISSION APPEAL: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace (St Francis of Assisi). Domestic violence is, sadly, not uncommon around the world. In recent years, Australia has raised awareness of domestic violence through significant campaigns. Unfortunately, progress can take a lot longer in developing countries, such as Papua New Guinea. In isolated and disadvantaged rural areas of Papua New Guinea that lack support networks, the effects of family violence are particularly devastating. WORKING BEE : A huge ‘thank you’ to all who turned up to the working bee on Wednesday. The place is looking great! It’s wonderful to see people taking such good care of our buildings and surrounds.

Our History Book: 1916-2016. Copies are now available in the Piety Stall for $5.00 each. A good history of a wonderful parish.

GOSPEL REFLECTION by Michael Tate : Today’s Gospel is another of Jesus’ parables and it begins “Two men went up to the Temple to pray”. But only one of them actually prayed: ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner’. The other informs God how well he is doing in the piety stakes. Notice that he strings together a whole lot of verbs, all in the first person singular! This means he is in mortal danger of staying in the first person singular after death, which his Hellish. The other is said to be ‘humble’. I like the English companion word: ‘humus’. He is well-grounded, knows where he is standing, sometimes in the manure of life. It takes courage and humility to admit to God exactly where we stand. We can do so in Confession, or less formally simply praying: ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner’. We could pause for a moment to humbly pray so that we may hope to hear Our Lord say: ‘This woman, this man, this boy, this girl, went home at rights with God.’

GOOD LUCK YEAR 12 STUDENTS: One hundred and thirty Lavalla Catholic College Year Twelve students, their families and College staff came together to share in a moving Graduation Mass on Thursday evening. Congratulations to the students on finishing their secondary schooling

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK: Our Parish is asked to be fully compliant with WWCC (or VIT equivalent) evidence for every volunteer and staff member in our Parish. We are asked to be ready by October 25, 2016. There is still a large number of people who are yet to furnish the office with current WWCC / VIT credentials. Could all volunteers please ensure the Parish Office has their up to date WWCC records. If you need assistance to obtain a WWCC certificate, please contact Bev in the parish office on 5174 2060.

www.smpt.org.au: Our website is up and

running, huge thanks to Steve Kimani and Adrian Crawford. We now need information about our Parish Groups to go on the website. So, can you all please start thinking – we need a very short description of your Groups aims, activities and details of who to contact to join. When yours is together, please email to [email protected].

POP UP ‘OP SHOP’?: We are trying to gauge whether there is any interest in this concept, where we collect OpShop / Garage Sale type items, and then pick a date for a ‘Pop Up Sale’. We would need a base to operate the sale from, and probably a storage area to collect goods in. Moneys raised by the sale of goods would be used to help make some improvements around the Church. If you’ve any helpful ideas, please contact Carmel Collis on 5175 0549. CHILDREN’S LITURGY: Children’s Liturgy takes place at 9.30am Mass on Sunday mornings. It’s a joyous time, sharing the Gospel with the children at their level. If you feel you are able to help out in this worthwhile ministry, please contact the Parish Office on 5174 2060. If you have need of more information, please call Carol on 5174 7712.

FINANCE MATTERS: “…for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 18:14 Pride and ego is the root cause of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and our hearts should be filled with gratitude.

Entrance Antiphon Cf Ps 104:3-4

Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice;

turn to the Lord and his strength;

constantly seek his face.

First Reading Sir 35:12-14, 16-18

A reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus

The prayer of the humble will penetrate the heavens.

The Lord is a judge who is no respecter of personages.

He shows no respect of personages to the detriment

of a poor man, he listens to the plea of the injured

party.

He does not ignore the orphan's supplication, nor the

widow's as she pours out her story. The man who with

his whole heart serves God will be accepted, his

petitions will carry to the clouds.

The humble man’s prayer pierces the clouds,

until it arrives he is inconsolable nor will he desist until

the Most High takes notice of him, acquits the virtuous

and delivers judgement.

And the Lord will not be slow, nor will he be dilatory

on their behalf.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 32:2-3. 17-19. 23. R. v.7

(R.) The Lord hears the cry of the poor.

1. I will bless the Lord at all times,

his praise always on my lips;

in the Lord my soul shall make its boast.

The humble shall hear and be glad. (R.)

2. The Lord turns his face against the wicked

to destroy their remembrance from the earth.

The just call and the Lord hears

and rescues them in all their distress. (R.)

3. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted;

those whose spirit is crushed he will save.

The Lord ransoms the souls of his servants.

Those who hide in him shall not be

condemned. (R.)

Second Reading 2 Tim 4:6-8, 16-18

A reading from the second letter of St Paul to

Timothy

All that remains is the crown of righteousness reserved for me.

My life is already being poured away as a libation, and

the time has come for me to be gone. I have fought

the good fight to the end; I have run the race to the

finish; I have kept the faith; all there is to come now

is the crown of righteousness reserved for me, which

the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that

Day; and not only to me but to all those who have

longed for his Appearing.

The first time I had to present my defence, there was

not a single witness to support me. Every one of them

deserted me – may they not be held accountable for

it. But the Lord stood by me and gave me power, so

that through me the whole message might be

proclaimed for all the pagans to hear; and so I was

rescued from the lion’s mouth.

The Lord will rescue me from all evil attempts on me,

and bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him

be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel Acclamation 2 Cor 5:19

Alleluia, alleluia!

God was in Christ, to reconcile the world to

himself;

and the Good News of reconciliation he has

entrusted to us.

Alleluia!

Gospel Lk 18:9-14

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke The publican returned to his home justified; the pharisee did not.

Jesus spoke the following parable to some people who

prided themselves on being virtuous and despised

everyone else, ‘Two men went up to the Temple to

pray, one a Pharisee, the other a tax collector. The

Pharisee stood there and said this prayer to himself,

“I thank you, God, that I am not grasping, unjust,

adulterous like the rest of mankind, and particularly

that I am not like this tax collector here. I fast twice

a week; I pay tithes on all I get.” The tax collector

stood some distance away, not daring even to raise

his eyes to heaven; but he beat his breast and said,

“God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” This man, I tell

you, went home again at rights with God; the other

did not. For everyone who exalts himself will be

humbled, but the man who humbles himself will be

exalted.’
