World Day for Consecrated Life In 1997, Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day of prayer to celebrate women and men in consecrated life. Since then the universal Church celebrates World Day for Consecrated Life on February 2nd. This celebration is attached to the feast of the Pres-entation of Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ all peoples. Please join with our Cardinal, Joseph W. Tobin CSsR and the Church of Newark at an 11am Mass in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Saturday, February 2, 2019 to celebrate those in consecrated life and in particular those Sisters, Brothers and Priests who are celebrating their anni-versaries this year. This invitation is extended in a special way to the members of every parish as a means of supporting and thanking the consecrated men and women of our Archdiocese for their self-less gift of service to our local Church.

Food Pantry News Thank you!!! 2018 was a very busy and successful year in the St. Michael’s Food Pantry. We honored 729 requests for food assistance; this includes weekly distributions and Thanksgiving and Christmas requests. We received and shelved 2,191 grocery bags of food, as well as, $8,705 in monetary donations. The Pantry is totally financed by donations, not parish funds, and approximately 75% of this support comes from parishioners. Additionally all pantry work is done by volunteers who give their time & efforts on a weekly basis. The 2018 Giving Tree included many gift tags and resulted in 431 gifts being donated. Sr. Mary Thomas, Superior, at St. Jo-seph’s Home for the Elderly wrote “thank you and please know that your friendship and sup-port is special to the Little Sisters and the Resi-dents of St. Joseph’s Home. We offer our prayers daily for the good people of St. Michael the Archangel and your loved one’s special in-tentions.” Sr. Patricia Hogan, O.P. Of Our Lady Help of Christians School in East Orange wrote “thank you so much for your many gifts. Fami-lies were grateful! You are our angels.” The gifts for the veterans are distributed to several homes in the area. For the past sev-eral years our gifts of “haircuts to vets” have been very popular and much appreciated. Many thanks and may God bless.

Blessings.... We often hear of and receive blessings. But what is a blessing? Generally speaking there are two categories. One is an invocation (invocative) of God's favors on persons or things; such is the case when food, houses and we are blessed. The other kind of blessing is one by which a sacred character is imputed to a person or thing, and it cannot be divested, of it. This is the case, for example, of ritual blessings given to churches, chalices and consecrated religious. Also, one can distinguish yet another type of blessing analogous to this latter one, and that is the blessings which render something a sacramental. The object does not become a Sacrament which sanctifies in and of itself, but rather helps us on our road to salvation. This is the blessing given to candles, rosaries and reli-gious medals. The effects here are: 1) freedom from the power of evil spirits, 2) preservation and restoration of bodily health, 3) the stirring up piety in one's heart and through this the remis-sion of venial sin and the temporal punishment due to it and 4) other spiritual or spiritual bene-fits. All of these effects are not contained in any one blessing but each occurs according to the formula of the blessing imparted. At the end of this week, the Church gives the opportunity to obtain two blessings in addition to the ones given every day at the end of holy Mass. On Saturday, February 2, the Presenta-tion of the Lord in the Temple, candles will be blessed before holy Mass. These candles as well as the paschal candle represent Christ, the Light of the world. The following day, February 3, is the date for the feast of St. Blaise when throats are blessed. Blaise was the 4th century bishop and martyr who, while on his way to prison, blessed a boy in the crowd who was choking with a bone in his throat. The bone was immediately dislodged and the young fellow was saved. Although the Masses this day are those of the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, throats will be blessed at he end of each Mass. Blessings given through the ministry of the Church are not magic. They require faith from us who personally receive them or who possess the object that is blessed. Moreover, we should have a consciousness of the fact that the person or thing is blessed and treating them accordingly with respect.

Fr. Stanley
