“Put out into deep water and lay out your
nets for a catch.” That seems to be the
crazy advice Jesus offers in today’s gospel,
to Simon Peter who has been fishing all
night with his friends and returned to
shore without a single catch. Having
offered his advice, Jesus gets into Simon
Peter’s empty boat and teaches the
crowds from the boat. This is what disciples are called to do, even if the
odds of a catch seem very slim.
Discipleship is about trust and accepting that there are layers of reality and
of mystery that cannot be plumbed alone or even in partnership. Like Simon
Peter, we have to acknowledge our limitations, our “sinfulness’ in gospel
terms. We are asked to leave “everything’ and “follow’ God’s anointed
prophet, to live in our lives the pattern of Jesus’ life. The previous chapter
has provided glimpses of that pattern: bringing good news to the poor,
healing to the sick and the broken, setting the captives free.
“Do not be afraid.” This is the other side of the coin. Simon Peter needs to
rely on God’s power to overcome the forces that interfere with the mission.
“Catching’ or “netting’ people rather than fish will be his business in the
future. The fishing metaphor is sustained throughout the passage.
The big catch is symbolic of the success that Peter and his companions can
expect, even if it is fraught with danger (the risk of torn nets and sinking
boats). In the context of the gospel, “catching people’ is not to be
understood as a recruitment drive for the reign of God’s movement. It is,
rather, a mission to bring the vulnerable safely to shore where they can
know the compassion and justice and “hospitality’ of God mediated through
the lives of those who take up the challenge to live the Good News.

In his message for the World Day of the Sick 2019, His Holiness Pope Francis reminds us:
“You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8).
These are the words spoken by Jesus when sending forth his apostles to spread the Gospel, so that his Kingdom might grow through acts of gratuitous love.
On the XXVII World Day of the Sick, to be solemnly celebrated on 11 February 2019 in Calcutta, India, the Church–as a Mother to all her children, especially the infirm – reminds us that generous gestures like that of the Good Samaritan are the most credible means of evan-gelization. Caring for the sick requires professionalism, tenderness, straightforward and simple gestures freely given, like a caress that makes others feel loved.
Amid today’s culture of waste and indifference, I would point out that “gift” is the category best suited to challenging today’s individualism and social fragmentation, while at the same time promoting new relationships and means of cooperation between peoples and cultures. “Gift” means more than simply giving presents: it involves the giving of oneself, and not simply a transfer of property or objects. Each of us is poor, needy and destitute. When we are born, we require the care of our parents to survive, and at every stage of life we remain in some way dependent on the help of others. We will always be conscious of our limitations, as “creatures”, before other individuals and situations. A frank acknowledgement of this truth keeps us humble and spurs us to practice solidarity as an essential virtue in life.
Such an acknowledgement leads us to act responsibly to promote a good that is both personal and communal. Only if we see ourselves, not as a world apart, but in a fraternal relationship with others, can we develop a social practice of solidarity aimed at the common good. We should not be afraid to regard ourselves as needy or reliant on others, because individually and by our own efforts we cannot overcome our limitations. So we should not fear, then, to acknowledge those limitations, for God himself, in Jesus, has humbly stooped down to us (cf. Phil 2:8) and continues to do so; in our pov-erty, he comes to our aid and grants us gifts beyond our imagining.

Sacramental Program 2019
We will begin our Children’s Sacramental Program for 2019 very soon.
This would be for the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Sacrament of
First Holy Communion. If you want your child/children to receive either
one of these sacraments, please enrol their names by 10 March 2019; the
enrolment forms will be made available by 1st February at the entrance of the Church and in the
parish office.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be on: Sun 26 May 2019
Sacrament of First Holy Communion will be on: Sun 23 June 2019
We are at the Plenary Council’s first stage of preparation – Listening and Dialogue. This first stage of preparation will continue until Ash Wednesday 2019. Over the past seven months, more than 30,000 people have generously shared their stories and experiences of life, faith and the Church with the Plenary Council. Those stories will help shape this historic
process by forming the agenda for the Plenary Council sessions in 2020 and 2021. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the Listening and Dialogue stage. If you haven’t yet shared your story, you have until March 2019 to do so. Together, we are on a journey of listening to God by listening to one another. All people are invited to engage in Listening and Dialogue Encounters – which are an open and inclusive experience of listening, dialogue and discernment about the future of the Catholic Church in Australia. The Listening and Dialogue Encounter is an opportunity to get together a group of friends, family or colleagues and spend some time thinking and talking about your experiences of faith, life and the Church. Everyone is invited to respond to the question:
What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?
Everyone’s experience of faith and the Church is unique and it is important that the Plenary Council hear responses from as many people as possible. How can I be involved? Invite your friends and family to have a conversation about the future of the Catholic Church in Australia. Ask everyone – “What do you think God is asking of us at this time?” And have them send in their responses online. this session.
