Dear Friends in Christ: The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

(USCCB) wrote a 32 page document in November 2018 entitled “Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love - A Pastoral Letter Against Racism.” Sad to say, the evil of racism has existed throughout salvation history. I quote the following from this pastoral letter:

“Holy Scripture boldly proclaims, “See what love the Father has bestowed on us that we may be called the children of God. Yet so we are” (1 Jn 3:1). This love “comes from God and unites us to God; through this unifying process it makes us a ‘we’ which transcends our divisions and makes us one, until in the end God is ‘all in all’ (1 Cor 15:28)...Despite many promising strides made in our country, racism still infects our nation.”

“Racism arises when—either consciously or unconsciously—a person holds that his or her own race or ethnicity is superior, and therefore judges persons of other races or ethnicities as inferior and unworthy of equal regard. When this conviction or attitude leads individuals or groups to exclude, ridicule, mistreat, or unjustly discriminate against persons on the basis of their race or ethnicity, it is sinful. Racist acts are sinful because they violate justice. They reveal a failure to acknowledge the human dignity of the persons offended, to recognize them as the neighbors Christ calls us to love (Mt 22:39).”

“Racism occurs because a person ignores the fundamental truth that, because all humans share a common origin, they are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God. When this truth is ignored, the consequence is prejudice and fear of the other, and—all too often—hatred...Every racist act—every such comment, every joke, every disparaging look as a reaction to the color of skin, ethnicity, or place of origin—is a failure to acknowledge another person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God. In these and in many other such acts, the sin of racism persists in our lives, in our country, and in our world.”

Pastor’s Message p. 2

“The injustice and harm racism causes are an attack on human life. The Church in the United States has spoken out consistently and forcefully against abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, the death penalty, and other forms of violence that threaten human life. It is not a secret that these attacks on human life have severely affected people of color, who are disproportionally affected by poverty, targeted for abortion, have less access to healthcare, have the greatest numbers on death row, and are most likely to feel pressure to end their lives when facing serious illness. As bishops, we unequivocally state that racism is a life issue. Accordingly, we will not cease to speak forcefully against and work toward ending racism. Racism directly places brother and sister against each other, violating the dignity inherent in each person. The Apostle James commands the Christian: “show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ” (Jas 2:1).”

Our nation has suffered from various forms of racisms, from the great wave of European immigration in the early 1900’s to even today from various nations. Racism and prejudice exist even within the same race or ethnic background at time. Such discrimination existed with our nation’s beginnings and how Catholic refugees found a haven to live in Maryland or “Mary Land.”

As we remember St. Maximilian Kolbe’s feast day, we remember how racism existed during the Holocaust. A “triangle” color badge worn on the clothes of a concentration camp inmate disclosed the reason for one’s incarceration and thus an “undesirable.” Yellow triangles were for Jews; purple triangles for Jehovah's Witnesses; black triangles for Romany (Gypsies), asocial and work derelicts (mostly Russians); pink triangles for homosexuals; blue triangles for emigrants, green triangles for criminals; and red triangles for political prisoners (the one St. Maximilian Kolbe wore).

Let us pray for an end to racism, prejudice, discrimination and hatred of all types in our society. It is an evil, a sin against God and humanity for we are all created in God’s image (Genesis 1: 27).

“The Cross is the school of love.”

“The most deadly poison of our time is indifference.”

—St. Maximilian Kolbe

“There is no greater love, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” John 15: 13

We are to do the following: 1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being cele-brated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words “and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.” —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

You may use all or any part, of this prayer format for your family’s novena. Try to be conscious of the 9 days preceding the anniversary of St. Maximilian’s death in Auschwitz: Feast Day on August 14th.

A BEGINNING PRAYER

Let us pray: God of power and mercy, you gave Maximilian Kolbe, your martyr, victory over suffering and death. Strengthen us as we prepare to celebrate the day of his triumph, and help us to be victorious over the evils of darkness and sin. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

Merciful God you made St. Maximilian Kolbe one of the foremost Catholic evangelists of the last century. He helped teach us your merciful plan for all, thus moving us to full conversion in faith and hope to per-fect obedience and union with the Heart of Jesus and to complete observance of your law of Love.

St. Maximilian was made fruitful through carrying the cross of suffering with dignity and hope loving his per-secutors and giving up his life for a total stranger. Through the intercession of St. Maximilian, grant us our petitions.

Give us a like dignity and hope in our sufferings and in our sacrifices. If it will glorify you heal us of all our in-firmities, both physical and spiritual. Grant to all who make this novena all the graces that St. Maximilian himself desires and asks for.

Enable each one of us as well as the whole Church to follow his example of effective Catholic evangelism. Finally, we ask that you grant the ardent desire of St. Maximilian, for the return to you of every individual person, family, society, nation, and culture of our time and of all time to come. Amen.

Leader: God, come to my assistance. Family: Lord, make haste to help me. Leader: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Family: As it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. God our Father in heaven, receive our humble pray-ers. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, save us. God the Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love. Holy Trinity, one God, grant us your salvation. Holy Mary, Mother of our Savior, intercede for us.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, great-hearted lover of God and man Pray for us. Faithful follower of St. Francis of Assisi, Teach us your total dedication to the Gospel life. Man of living faith, Lead us to believe as you did. Brave Knight of the Immaculata, Help us to be instruments of Mary. Apostle of the Miraculous Medal, Give us confidence in Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

A Week with Mary August 12 - 19, single women ages 18-35

A Week with Mary is a virtual retreat for col-lege students, young teachers and youth min-isters who would like to begin the school year with Mary, Our Mother. There will be two vir-tual meetings with a whole week of reflec-tions, spiritual challenges inspired by Our La-dy, and at least one meeting with a spiritual director. The virtual meetings include the Glorious mysteries of the Rosary on the Wednesday before the Assumption and the one before the Queenship of Mary. The web link to register:

The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation Videos by Jeff Cavins

This 25-week study gives participants an overview of Salvation History by following 14 narrative books in the Bible. It also gives the tools to help understand the remaining books by helping contextualize where they belong in history and what was normal in the lives and culture at the time. An excellent study for beginners and people who wish to read the entire Bible. We will be holding meetings by Zoom on Sunday evenings at 6:30 pm or—this is new!—on Monday mornings at 10 am. There are many useful materials to help understand the main points that come with the book. The cost of the materials is $35 but do not let payment stop you from joining us. Contact Molly Smith in the parish office or at [email protected] to register. It is still early in the study, we would love for you to JOIN US!

St. Lawrence, August 10th, is the patron saint of school children, poor people, cooks and comedi-ans to name but a few.

Prayer to St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

O Generous patron of the Church’s poor, St. Lawrence, pray to the One God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit that all the poor of the

Church in need in every corner of the world may feel the effect of the love of their brothers and sis-ters who seek to help them. Deliver the Church from the greed and envy of the powerful and pro-tect her rights and property so that she may serve the needy in freedom, giving them good things for soul and body. May we come some day with all those whom we helped on earth to the bright man-sions of heaven where we will enjoy the riches of God’s house and the company of the Savior who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

"Men and women who pray know that hope is stronger than discouragement." Pope Francis THANK YOU

to our Parish Knights of Columbus who sponsored last Sunday’s Blood Drive. Due to your generous donations of blood, 132 lives were assisted (saved)! Thank you all for giving the gift of life with your blood donation.

THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic mir-acle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

That we respond obediently to God’s call and have the confidence to walk on water. “He said, “Come”. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” Matthew 14:29 When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond-ed immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the pow-er of his presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen how Jesus is call-ing you to live the extraordinary life He has in-tended for you.

For the repose of the souls of our faithful departed:

Ruth Tolentino †, sister of Susan Yano Barbara Hamala †, sister of Madeline St. John Steve Castillo †

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. —And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. —Amen. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. —Amen.

For consolation & God’s healing graces upon the family & friends of the deceased. Heal their pain and dispel the darkness & doubt that comes from grief. —Amen.

"But racism still profoundly affects our culture, and it has no place in the Christian heart. This evil causes great harm to its victims, and it corrupts the souls of those who harbor racist or prejudicial thoughts. The persistence of the evil of racism is why we are writing this letter now."

Let us pray: Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son, God has found a way to unite himself to every human being, called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.

We ask for your help in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times when we have failed to love and respect one another.

We ask for your help in obtaining from your Son the grace we need to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society.

We ask for your help in following your Son, so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.

Mother of the Church, the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts: pray for us.
